WisContext

Earlier this year, avian flu devastated the poultry industry across Wisconsin and the country.

During the outbreak, about 48 million chickens, turkeysand other domestic birds were impacted nationwide— with 1.9 million birdseuthanized in Wisconsin.

In the state, nine commercial turkey and egg-laying farms and one backyard poultry flock had birds contract the virus. Those farms were quarantined to prevent avian flu from spreading elsewhere, and they’ve faced a difficult recovery in late summer and early fall.

Listen to WPR’s Scott Gordon explain thatit wasn’t just those 10Wisconsin farms that were impacted, but the ag industry across the state that felt the effects of avian flu.
