Ladies and gentlemen, Kick It Up A Stitch with Nancy Zieman! ( cheers and applause ) >> Thank you! Wow! What a great audience. Thank you for being here tonight. I'm delighted to have such a fun group. I have a band! Wow! ( applause ) The Sewing with Nancy Band, otherwise known as The Jazz Combo at Memorial High School in Madison, is with me tonight. Great guys, aren't they? ( applause ) Thanks, guys. A little different from the traditional Sewing with Nancy program tonight. Usually, we have 26 minutes and 46 seconds of pretty safe sewing or quilting. Not tonight. ( laughter ) We're going to do a little sewing, very little, a little cooking, a little music. A little sewing, a little cooking, a little music. But I can't do it by myself. I have my great friend, Mary Mulari as my co-host. Mary. ( cheers and applause ) >> Thank you! It's great to be here, and cooking and sewing with you. Wow. >> Yeah, I like it. It's kind of like Cooking with Nancy. I think it's got a good ring to it, don't you think? Yeah. ( laughter ) >> Maybe your retirement job. >> There you go. ( laughter ) So, Mary, you've been on Sewing with Nancy-- We've done Sewing with Nancy for 27 years, 700-some shows, but who counts. ( applause ) Well, and you've been on the most of anyone. >> Thirty-nine times. >> Thank you, good job. ( applause ) Well, since we're doing sewing and cooking, and music, we're going to have a menu. So we're going to go over the menu with you tonight, so you'll know what's in store. >> I've been studying this other woman on TV who points at things. >> Yes. >> So, tonight's menu... ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) Appetizer accessories. >> Appetizers, accessories. Combining two things there. >> Side dish surprise. And then, main dish makeover. >> I think you've been known for a few makeovers. >> I like makeovers. And then, delectable treats. >> Yum. >> And the final, egg-cellent table toppings. >> Egg-cellent. Didn't you get your degree in English? >> I did. And egg-cellent? >> Well, this is creative spelling. Creative sewing, creative spelling. >> Okay, all right. All right, fine. So, we're going to start with our appetizer accessories. And when you think of an appetizer, and you think of an accessory, well what better accessory can you start with than an apron. >> An apron! Ah-ha, perfect! Yes. So, we'll display this on-- Oh, this is a brand new board that you have made. >> How often do you get to do this? Sewing and cooking? Right, yeah. All right, so on this board, we have four different quadrants. And it's made with unique fabric. >> They're called fat quarters. >> Fat quarters. ( laughter ) You know, I don't think-- >> They're not going to know. >> No. Just one minute. A fat quarter is not a body part! ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) ( applause ) You know, a fourth of a yard is usually like nine inches by the width of the fabric, 45. Well, this is cut, for those of you who are in the audience, it's cut differently. It's 18 x 22 inches, so you get these four fat quarters. And you're going to sew them together. >> Here are two. >> Okay, big chunks. >> Then we have two more. >> All right. >> Let's see, I think we'll put them like this. >> All righty. >> And we don't sew them together-- ( audience reacting ) ( laughter ) What's the matter? >> I don't know! >> Well, we don't sew them together evenly. They're offset a little bit. And then I've already done that on this. This is kind of like Sewing with Nancy. You kind of just throw the samples away off to the side. ( laughter ) So here, I've outlined the shape of the-- This is a reversible apron, but this is just one layer. And I've outlined it with a bold marker, because you know, to be able to see. >> Yeah, I wouldn't recommend this, Mary. >> Well, it worked for me. >> All right, fine. ( laughter ) And then, you just kind of made a back for it. You have some scraps left over. You can use that for other things. Here is the reversible side. This is a single fabric. >> And of course, you probably will want to appliqu. >> Mary appliqus, yep. >> Here's a band. You put a towel here. And here's a pocket. A clever pocket. >> You have a little hanger-upper. >> That's right. Oh, the bottom's open, too, because if you go out to the garden, you could carry produce in it. ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) >> You could, yeah, you could. Then you have a little grosgrain ribbon going through here. And look at this. Will, are you going to get this tight? >> Oh, that's a little marker to show the middle of the ribbon, so you can keep track. That goes in the back of your neck. >> Okay. ( laughter ) >> That's a blond joke! ( laughter ) >>All right, if you must. Then, you know, guys cook too. >> Yeah, they do. So, I made a really boring one for men. ( laughter ) Well, just four shades of green batik. And this one has some bias tape sewn over the seams, also. That's the men's version. >> Well, a little money on the back. Print your own money. >> Yeah, right. >> Well, this is basic. Anyone can make an apron like this. But now it's time to Kick It Up A Stitch! Whoa! ( rim shot ) All right, you're in for a surprise. Here we go. >> This time, you know, some of us have problems remembering our recipes. >> True. >> I'm not naming names here. But you know. ( laughter ) But in case-- >> Are you implying something? >> No. >> Good. Just remember, you want to make it 40? >> I guess I do. ( laughter ) I'll try, but it's going to be hard. >> So here's all the ingredients for what we're going to make, first of all. We're going to make Newfangled Caviar. Mmm. You're getting the hang of that, right? ( laughter ) Okay, so, to make Newfangled Caviar, we're going to have Nancy's garbanzo beans, one can. We're going to have black beans, Nancy's Specialty. Nancy's Tomatoes, diced. Nancy's Whole Kernel Corn, and then Nancy's Red Kidney Beans. >> I notice it's all about Nancy. ( laughter ) >> I wish my hair were longer. >> Yeah. >> Okay, and then, we're going to have a little onion, chopped, and a little celery in it. This is fabric. Pretty cool. Then, the condiments down below. Oh, Mary's Salt. >> Well, you know, come on, I should be able to have one ingredient in this with my name on it. So, it's Mary's Salt. >> All right All right, fine, fine. These are limes. And then we have a dressing, the vegetable oil. And what does that say, Mary? Cumin. That's good. >> And chili powder. >> So, but you know, you've got to make the fabric, because this is fabric. We didn't put labels on there. We can't sew celery on there. >> Well, I hope not. >> So, you know, in your sewing room, you just have to have more stuff. ( laughter ) Stuff is important! ( applause ) It's cheap therapy. And a copier. Just put it in there. A color copier. Then, we're going to have-- ( blows loudly on glass ) ( laughter ) Oh, good. There was a little paper lint on there. >> This is-- The grid is down there. ( laughter ) >> Okay, fine. It's Saran Wrap, you know, you can kind of put it down to keep it-- >> We don't want to make a permanent mess here with celery. >> Then here's the celery. Okay, good, great. It's beautiful. Especially, I really do like the inside. You've got to put the inside down. You kind of layer it. ( crunches celery ) ( laughter ) Mmm, you'll like this. >> Is it good? >> Mm-hmm. >> Well, I haven't had any dinner yet. ( laughter ) Okay. Mm, good. Great. Excuse me. >> What about this? >> Yeah, yeah. >> Whole? >> Sure. Onion. And then we have paper that has fabric on it. Yep, it's paper on one side, fabric on the other. With this copier, you put it with the paper down. And then, yeah, then you can make your own fabric. Because you hit start. Fabric, in front of your eyes! Ooh! ( applause ) Now you peel off the paper from the back. You cut it into sections, this is the hard part, getting the paper to come off. Then, presto, you cut this into sections and you applique. (Mary gasps) >> That's the best part! (applause) >> Mary, did you know I'm writing a book? >> Oh! >> Yeah. >> "Fifty years of Sewing with Nancy," or something like that? ( laughter ) ( audience groans ) ( rim shot ) >> Fifty years of Sewing with Nancy? >> Well, maybe you're tired of writing sewing books. >> Well, I am. >> Oh. ( laughter ) >> I'm taking a little reprieve, just a short one. Yeah. My new book. ( laughter ) ( applause ) It's still in the editing process. >> Oh, good. >> I haven't gone through spell check yet. ( laughter ) (rim shot ) Did you hear about, you know, the blonde who went into the library? She went up to the librarian and she said, "I'll have a hamburger, french fries, and a diet coke." >> She said that to the librarian? >> To the librarian. And the librarian looked at her, the way only librarians can look. ( laughter ) Yeah. And the blond, oh, she said, "I'm sorry!" ( whispering ) "I'll have a hamburger, french fries and a diet coke." ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) ( applause ) Okay, well, now we have the recipe. And now we need to cook it. So we need a little dress form to put this on. And now, guys, a little traveling music while we set up to do the cooking. Okay, now we're going to make this Newfangled Caviar. We have all these cans. We took a little time and opened them up in advance. So okay, Mary, you have our recipe over there. >> We start off with Nancy's Garbanzo Beans. >> Love it. Okay, here. >> Next, we have Nancy's Black Beans. >> Black beans, okay. >> What are those labels on those cans? Well, you know, I don't like those labels. They weren't really true. >> Your name and picture weren't on them? ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) Not enough to have your name. You've got to have both. >> Yeah. Next-- Nancy's Natural Black Beans! ( laughter ) >> Next, Nancy's Natural Diced Tomatoes. >> Okay. >> Nancy's Whole Kernel Corn. Got it? Mm-hmm. And then Nancy's Dark Red Kidney Beans. >> Okay, all right. Ooh, it's pretty. Look at that! >> Yeah, ooh. >> Kind of like a quilt. You have your light, dark, medium. ( laughter ) >> Yeah, really. >> That isn't so pretty there. >> No. All right. So then, it says three ribs of celery, diced. >> Okay, three ribs of celery. And hey... We sew, we cook. ( laughter ) It's much easier! >> Yeah, really. ( laughter ) >> Mary, you know, maybe just an 1/8 of an inch, not a 1/4 of an inch. ( laughter ) >> Picky, picky. >> Yeah, well, I am the star. >> Yeah, I know. ( laughter ) >> Okay, and then, red onions. They're really pretty. I like red onions. And they're really strong! ( laughter ) Whoo! >> When did you open that up? Was it in your refrigerator? >> I left it in the car. >> Oh, well, no wonder. >> All right, so we have some celery, some red onion. And then, you're supposed to add that to the bean and corn mixture. ( laughter ) >> I'm kind of messy. ( laughter ) Is that enough? >> That's enough. >> Okay, then Mary-- This is a little messier than sewing, I must admit. Okay, you want to chop up some of that onion there? And then, I'll work on the dressing. ( laughter ) Okay, I've got the salad oil. You may need to sharpen your blade after that. >> Oh, yeah. ( laughter ) >> Okay, 1/4 cup of oil. Juice of two limes. Oh, that's good enough, yeah. It's coarsely chopped. ( laughter ) >> Very coarsely! >> All right, you get a lime. >> Oh. >> I get a lime. >> Okay. >> And then we-- >> All right. >> Ooh, is there any sewing notion we could use for this? >> No. >> No, I guess not. >> A hammer. ( laughter ) People have, you know, where you put the lemon and lime on top. I forget what they're called! ( laughter ) A little help from the audience. >> Juicer. >> Juicer, yeah. >> Well, I forgot that. >> I guess you did. ( laughter ) All right, is that good enough? >> That's good enough. Then, we're going to have two teaspoons, two little "T"s, of chili powder. >> Um. >> There's some big "T"s we'll use later. >> Okay. >> Chili powder. Oh, Nancy's Original. ( laughter ) Okay... ( laughter ) >> You want to add cumin? >> I do. >> How much? >> I want one "T". >> Is that with...? >> Yeah. >> All right. ( laughter ) >>
Audience
Oh! >> Okay, and a little salt. >> Oh, a little. >> This is Mary's Salt, you know. >> Oh, that's right. ( laughter ) We're running out of time! >> All right. >> Now, I think we should stir it up. >> That helps. >> Oh, boy. >> It's beautiful color. >> It is. >> I think we need fabric that has that. Wouldn't that be great? >> Whoops. ( laughter ) Okay, and then-- Hey, we've got to have some taste testers. >> Oh, sure, you know. >> Are you hungry? ( laughter ) Yeah. ( laughter ) >> Okay. >> All right. Okay. ( laughter ) They do this on the other cooking shows. ( laughter ) Okay, what do you think? Looking good? Okay, good! All right. We're not gonna ask the trumpet and tenor sax. They've got to play. They thankfully like it! Okay, all right? Thumbs up? ( applause ) Well, I know it's kind of hard, guys, but you can save that for later! ( laughter ) Swallow first... Because I need some traveling music! ( laughter ) >> All right. So now we have...? >> Side Dish Surprise. ( laughter ) >> Yes, is it a surprise to you, too? >> Yeah, really. ( laughter ) >> Oh, good. Well, first we're going to show the kind of basic stuff, you know. And we're going to make on the side, you carry something on the side. It's going to be a bag. >> A hand bag! Gosh, Nancy, did you cut that off your couch? ( laughter ) >> No! >> Well, I thought-- >> My love seat. >> Oh. ( laughter ) >> It is upholstery fabric, but you could use cotton fabric. You could use denim. You could use place mats. We have, oh, from the audience, yeah. >> Really, yeah. >> Oh, yeah, it works great. As long as, if you're using lightweight fabrics, to put a layer of batting or some fusible interfacing to make it a little heavier. And I'll show you how fast you can put this together. Now, this is all kind of virtual sewing here. But we have some interfacing added, fused to the wrong side of the fabric. And then, I'm going to use a template. You could use a pattern or a template. I'm placing the template on here. You can see I've already traced it. But there are six options. And I decided I'm going to use option, I think it's D. But I traced around the edges, flipped it over, traced the other side. Nice and flat. >> Even a blonde can handle it. ( laughter ) >> Obviously. ( rim shot ) Yeah, okay. Then you can cut out two layers. We have two layers here. Cut out two layers. And you can sew, instead of the side seams first, you're just going to sew from the bottom up. And here we go. >> Oh. >> Yep, get with the program. >> Sorry! >> So, we sewed from the bottom up. And then we put this plastic stabilizer in the bottom. It's kind of hard to pin through. You can sew through it easily, but it bends the pins. So, use double sided basting tape. >> Oh, I like that. >> You can get it from your office and school supply store. >> Oh, really? >> Put it down. And look, I have little feet here. Are you getting that? >> I think we better look at the other side to show the feet. >> Yeah, I put those on there. >> Very cute. Oh, no. >> Well, I'll get it later. It just kind of went flying. Normally, you would have it there. We'd put another back here. Then you sew the side seams. Oh, I forgot a sewing machine. ( laughter ) Oh, well. I'll pin. ( laughter ) Virtual sewing. I didn't really forget. I have one. Two or three. >> Mm-hmm. >> And then, you sew the gussets. Sew the gussets. And pretty soon, you have a bag. Just kind of sew across the bottom. Pretty bad directions, but this is what it looks like. You make a lining. >> It's starting to look like something. >> You make a lining. You put the sides together. And ah! The magic of samples. Oh, yeah. And then, you can get some D-rings or O-rings, make some straps. And you put those-- It's about a three-hour project. I know I'm giving you the very, very, very short version of this. But you put the D-rings and the O-rings. And you still have this open part on the top. To finish it, you just simply fold it under and cover the edges with grosgrain ribbon. Just like that. >> Oh, yeah. >> Wonderful. ( applause ) >> Oh, okay, that's quite nice. But I think it's time to Kick It Up A Stitch! >> So, our Kick It Up A Stitch version is a salad bag. ( laughter ) It's a very attractive bag that you can wear. >> Oh. >> Yes, and carry your salad with you. ( laughter ) Because inside the salad, we have the tongs! ( laughter ) And we have the salad. >> Yeah. >> And we also can accessorize it with fork fringe. ( laughter ) >> Wow, perfect. >> Mm-hmm. >> And how do you attach that fork fringe? >> I know there are cameras. And I know this is Public Television, but I'm going to break a rule. ( both sigh ) I'm going to break a rule. And I'm going to say a brand name. Velcro! ( laughter ) Otherwise, I have to say "hook and loop tape." >> Mm-hmm. >> But this is... Velcro! ( laughter ) It's very freeing. It's very freeing to say that. >> Oh, I'm so happy for you. ( laughter ) >> So we have a little hook side on this side. And we glued a little of the other side. Then when you take your salad for your lunch, you can share it with your friends. ( laughter ) You can offer them a fork. And then, instead of sewing pockets on the inside, you can sew those zipper-like bags. ( laughter ) And then you can put your dirty forks in there, like that. Forks in there, like that. And then, you can have the other side for little napkins. ( laughter ) So, that's your salad bag. ( applause ) >> Yeah, perfect. >> So, we have the salad bag. We have a bag of lettuce. >> Well, Nancy's Greener Selections. >> Oh, yeah. >> Huh. >> Green is good. >> Yeah, it is. >> Now, we need to kind of make some dressing, don't you think, to go with this? >> Oh, yeah. >> Let's open some packages. >> It's pretty boring without that. >> So we have a little cruet here. Whoops. And we need some of Nancy's Natural Olive Oil. No, this is, whatever, just oil. ( laughter ) And we need a little bit of this. No, that goes in first. >> Okay, this is vinegar. Nancy's Natural Balsamic Vinegar. >> You're supposed to fill it to the vinegar line, but just fill it to the water line. That's fine. ( laughter ) >> All right. ( laughter ) >> Hmm, I hate it when this happens. >> Gosh. >> I wish I had a pair of scissors. ( laughter ) >> Oh, gosh, we have our scissors carefully stored. >> Yeah, well, I don't mean those scissors. >> Well, yeah, but we better tell, you know, our little hint from my friend Nancy Hart, because she wanted to protect her good shears. >> Have you ever had your kids, or your family use your good scissors? ( audience reacts ) >> Yeah, yeah. That's a bad thing. So, Nancy came up with this wonderful solution. She stored her wonderful shears in a box in the freezer labeled... ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) It works every time! ( laughter ) Okay, so there's a little vinegar in here. >> Then we have Nancy's Italian Salad Dressing Mix. >> I thought you were Norwegian. >> I am. Norwegians are pretty blonde. ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) Thank you. You know, there was this blonde and he was going to the Olympics. And he was in the Track and Field events. This blonde guy was, you know, walking around the track, looking pretty good. And a reporter came up to him and said, "Are you a pole vaulter?" And the guy looked at him and said, "No, I'm a Swede, but how did you know my name was Walter?" ( laughter ) ( rim shot ) ( applause ) >> So, I get to be the oil girl. >> The oil girl? Okay. All right, fine. All right, so we have the Italian dressing. We have the balsamic vinegar that's been hiding in the cave for ten years. We have oil. We have the cruet. And we have the lettuce. Okay, open the lettuce. >> Oh! >> We don't want to use our good scissors. >> No. A seam ripper! ( laughter ) >> Here, I have one, too. Two seam rippers. Okay. >> It sounds like the start of a joke. ( laughter ) >> Okay, all right. Wow, look at those pieces of lettuce! ( laughter ) Who can eat those? ( laughter ) >> There, back to the... >> Oh, god! ( laughter ) >> This is much easier! >> Oh, works out! ( laughter ) >> Well, that's better. >> Okay, all right. You know, we'll just toss this a little bit. But I never like to just eat salad alone. So, we'll serve a course with it. >> Oh, yummy. >> So, while we'll do our next set up, guys? >> It's time for the Main Dish Makeover. >> The main dish makeover. >> Makeover! >> Makeover! Makeover, makeover. >> What's the best thing to makeover? ( laughter ) >> A sweatshirt! ( rim shot ) ( laughter ) >> How slow are you? >> Pretty slow. >> I like you, Nancy, but I'd worry if you were handling subatomic particles. ( laughter ) >> I thought you were my friend. >> Yeah, well. >> All right. Okay, fine. How many sweatshirt books, TV shows, patterns? >> I've kind of lost track. But right now, I have four sweatshirt books. Well, you never know. >> Five, six... So this, in its first life, was a sweatshirt. >> With a crew neck, and ribbing on the bottom, and sleeve ribbing. So it's a big makeover. And we call this the fat quarter cardigan because once again, we have fat quarters. >> Uh-huh. >> Yeah. And we have three different panels that make up the front cardigan. There's a collection of different buttons. >> You cut it apart in the center. And you added the little tabs. >> That's right. You're pretty good at opening those up. >> I've worn things before, yeah. >> Okay. Cute. Oh, there's tape. I wonder where that came from. ( laughter ) >> Whoops! >> There's a facing along the bottom. >> Oh, nice. I like that. >> To replace the bottom ribbing. And then, a back-of-the-neck facing, so that when you have this on a hanger, it looks nice. >> Hanger appeal, great. ( laughter ) >> It's called hanger appeal. ( laughter ) And then we have two cuffs. And I did not make the cuffs in the same fabric. This is revolutionary. >> Ooh! >> You're cutting edge, Mary. >> I know. I'm really testing things. >> So, well, this is nice. It's wearable. Good for many times of year, seasons. Yeah. >> I think it's first-rate. ( laughter ) >> Oh, very clever. I think it's first rate, too. But you know, you learned how to do this on Sewing with Nancy. >> Right. >> But what you didn't learn how to do on Sewing with Nancy is how to Kick It Up A Stitch. It was about 1989. It was New Year's Eve. And I thought I was pretty classy. And I wore a black dress. And this scarf. >> Whoo! ( band whistles ) ( laughter ) >> Oh, boy! I only wore it once. ( laughter ) Because it needed a makeover. It needed a makeover. This glitzy scarf with the premiere makeover article, a sweatshirt! ( laughter ) >> What could be better. This is more glitz than most of us Scandinavians wear. ( laughter ) In two months time. So we have the cute panels of the scarf here on each side of the cardigan front. And then, Nancy, we need to talk about my very favorite closure method, which is, ponytail holders! >> I'm sure you have used these ponytail holders a lot in your accessorizing... ( laughter ) >> Oh, yes, on my hair? Yeah. Well, my motto is if you can't use them on your head, you have to put them somewhere. ( laughter ) ( applause ) Oh, thank you. Now, on this one, I did use the same fabric on both cuffs. >> Oh, well, you've kind of tamed down a little bit. >> I've tamed down. >> All right. And then you have a little boucle yarn. Uh-oh. You were lazy, Mary. >> Oh, no, I'm just smart. ( laughter ) I attached my buttons with golden metallic fasteners. ( laughter ) That's the best! ( applause ) Isn't it? >> Golden metallic fasteners. Okay, a.k.a. safety pins. >> Safety pins. >> Okay, fine. Well, that was kind of an interesting Kick It Up A Stitch. But since this is the main dish, we now need to prepare the main dish. What do you say? Our menu for the Main Dish Makeover is the 10-minute lasagne. The 24 ounces of Nancy's Premium Spaghetti Sauce. >> And I notice the expiration date is June 21, 2009. ( laughter ) >> Oh, wow! >> I wonder if I can open this. ( laughter ) >> Oh. Get the kids. Our next ingredient... >> You have such big muscles. ( laughter ) >> Mary's too weak! Thanks, guys. ( applause ) Okay, and then I'm going to add my natural cheese soup. >> What would your mother say about you cooking in a plastic bag? ( laughter ) >> Whoo! ( laughter ) This spatula is too big. >> Yeah. >> Okay, so this is Wisconsin cheese. >> Oh, the best. ( laughter ) >> Okay, then three cups of noodles. Get out your seam ripper. It's handy! Okay, a cup? One, two, three. ( laughter ) ( applause ) One package of frozen stir fry onions and peppers. >> That seam ripper, that's perfect. >> It is. Dump, dump, dump. You want to open the meatballs? >> Oh, sure. Do you trust me? That's not bad. Nancy's meatballs. >> Yeah, I know. >> Nothing but the best. >> And then, some cheese, mozzarella. Wisconsin mozzarella. ( Mary laughs ) Mozzarella. ( laughter ) Don't tell the American Heart Association. ( laughter ) And then, we're going to add two teaspoons-- Tablespoons, big T. ( laughter ) Big T, not little T. One, two. ( laughter ) Good, I kind of like that. >> Beautiful color. >> Now, place all ingredients in the crock pot. And you can use a crock pot liner, if you like. ( laughter ) Easier clean-up. Really. >> These noodles are raw. They're hard. >> Well, you've got to cook this for three to four hours, stirring several times in the crock pot. In fact, let me show you how good it is. >> Oh, is this like those cooking shows? >> Like a cooking show? ( laughter ) This is a cooking show! ( laughter ) Honestly, the help you get these days. Now, you're going to be in for a surprise in the front row. ( laughter ) >> Ooh! >> Wow. >> Mmm, yummy. Yum, yum, yummy. Guys? ( laughter ) Okay, alrighty. Okay, Mary, a little presentation. A vegetable and a little-- >> Do you have your forks? ( laughter ) >> Could you lick your forks off? ( laughter ) Oh, I didn't give them any forks? Oh, sorry! Okay. >> There's one. >> Good thing they know what's going on. ( audience talking indistinctly ) Oh, we could get them out of the salad bag, yes. >> Oh. >> Oh, yummy, good. >> Our audience is really alert. I'm happy for that. >> The world needs more alert. ( laughter ) >> There you are. >> Okay. ( laughter ) What do you think, Ben? It's okay? >> It's hot. >> Hot? Very hot. ( laughter ) What's the verdict? It's okay? >> Very good. >> Oh, good. ( applause ) Well, we've had the main dish makeovers. We've had the salad. Oh, boy. And pretty soon, we've got to clean this up, because we're going to do some Delectable Treats. Guys, you can eat while we're talking a little bit later. Let's have a little travel music. ( laughter ) >> We've had a makeover. We've had a little bag. We've had an accessory. >> A sweatshirt. >> A sweatshirt. >> Well, the next piece starts like this. >> It doesn't look too delectable to me. The color should be at least attractive, Nancy. >> Okay, fine. >> This is in your car. And it's maybe a pillow or sits in the trunk, if you don't want to look at it all the time. But then, when the weather turns cold, you open it up and it magically becomes a poncho. It's a poncho that you can sew in 90 minutes, in fleece. >> Oh, it's fleece. >> Oh, yes. >> Look at that. This is great. >> It's got hand-warmer pockets and a big hood. So, we'll put this on the dress form. >> Okay. >> Mannequin, or womannequin. ( laughter ) >> Kathy, can we have the womannequin, please? The mannequin. It's pretty good. You did a little double needle stitching around here. >> Yeah, that was totally unnecessary, because this fabric doesn't fray. >> True. >> So, I don't know what I was thinking. But, you know. ( laughter ) >> When it's cold, you might want to wear it ice fishing. ( laughter ) >> You might! >> This blonde guy was going ice fishing, and he got his bait, his little minnows. And he's got his pail, and his fishing pole, and his auger. And he went in the lake. He started drilling the hole, and all at once he heard, "There are no fish underneath the ice." The guy looked up and picked his pail. He picked up the auger. He picks up his fishing pole and he walks 50 feet. Puts it down. There's nobody out there. He's the only person. And he starts to drill another hole. All at once, he hears again, "There aren't any fish underneath the ice." This time, he walked 100 yards in the opposite direction. Same thing. Just about ready to put the minnow on the hook, the same thing. "There aren't any fish underneath the ice." And the guy looks up and he said, "Is it you?" "Yes, it's the ice rink manager." ( laughter ) ( applause ) And you just thought I knew how to do a 5/8" seam allowance. ( laughter ) Okay, well, we have the ice fishing little wardrobe there. It's kind of nice. >> What do mean, kind of? ( laughter ) >> Very nice. It's lovely. It's charming. >> But I guess you're right, it is time to Kick It Up A Stitch! ( rim shot ) >> And we have our first lovely model, who's going to come over. >> This is made from very special fabric. It's great for menopausal women. ( laughter ) It has yarn couched on the edge of the hood, and on the edges of the poncho. >> It's air-- >> And you can even use it as a swimsuit cover-up. ( laughter ) ( applause ) This what I wear for evenings to the theater in my little town of 1,800 people. ( laughter ) Donna is modeling the shimmering model with a cowl collar featuring sequins. It goes over really well at the theater. >> It kind of looks like fish tails shining in the light. ( laughter ) >> Thanks a lot, Nancy. >> Oh, you're welcome. ( laughter ) By the way, Donna, come back. Come back and take a little center stage. This is Donna Fenske, the right hand person of Sewing with Nancy. Give Donna a hand. ( applause ) Those are really kicked up there, Mary. And I think we could get rid of our little womannequin. Because we are going to make a little delectable dessert. Guys? >> Oh, yeah, they're gonna like this. ( applause ) >> There we go! Espresso pie. And now, we are going to have a cup and a fourth of milk. Of cold milk. Got milk? >> Okay, hang on. One... ( laughter ) >> That's pretty good. >> Okay. We'll make it. >> Add two big Ts of instant coffee. Nancy's Specialty Dark Roasted. ( laughter ) Great in the morning. And I sometimes need just a little extra. >> Oh, yeah. >> Why not? Oh, yummy. Okay, then, two packages of white chocolate flavored pudding. >> Nancy's Original? >> Yeah, you bet. Exactly. >> Uh-huh, yeah. Why am I not surprised? >> Oh, well. ( laughter ) It smells pretty good. It really does. Okay,
mix in large bowl
milk, instant coffee, add pudding mix, beat with wire whisk or power tool for one minute. ( laughter ) ( laughter ) ( drumming ) >> Keep going! ( laughter ) Five, four, three, two, one! ( applause ) All right, then we need... ( laughter ) I just had this dry cleaned, too, Mary. >> Oh, well. >> Then we need one tub of frozen, non-dairy whipped topping. Either light or regular. >> Well, why bother with light? ( laughter ) >> Good idea. >> I mean, if you're going to have it, why? >> What's the point? >> Yeah. >> All right. >> Okay, do I get to mix this again? >> With a whisk. That's hard to say. Whisk. And half of... oh. >> Half? ( laughter ) Can I mix this now? >> Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just lightly! Lightly! ( laughter ) >> Oh, are you afraid? ( laughter ) >> Okay. It looks good. >> Yeah. >> It looks really good. Yummy, yummy. >> I hope you invite me to mix next time, on the 40th episode of Sewing with Nancy. ( laughter ) >> Okay, got it! Then we have one ready-made chocolate-- A day is not complete without chocolate. ( applause ) Oh, yeah. And then, we'll just scoop it all together. Then you've got to chill this a while. Garnish as desired. What would you like to garnish it with? Do you want--? >> Well, jelly beans? ( laughter ) >> I kind of like those cinnamon hots. ( laughter ) Oh, black licorice. It's my favorite candy. >>
Audience
Mmm. >> Yeah, I know that. >> You didn't do a very good-- >> I think it's enough to cover up, because you didn't blend this very well at all. ( laughter ) Look at this! It's like swirl. ( laughter ) >> I think that's got a pretty look to it, myself. >> You better lick it off before you... ( laughter ) Then it's not going to mess up the color combination. ( laughter ) If you want to use this, you can. All right, okay. ( laughter ) >> Don't tell me you've never that! ( laughter ) Don't tell me! They want to think this is an unusual experience. >> Okay, then you can garnish it. You can add a little shaving of chocolate. If you really follow the recipe, this is what it looks like. ( laughter ) >> Ooh! ( applause ) >> A or B! ( laughter ) A or B! What do you want? ( laughter ) I don't think you're going to be my Cooking with Nancy first guest, no. ( laughter ) >> We should ask the band which one they want. ( laughter ) >> This one? They want the pretty one. Okay, well, Mary you want-- I don't think they licked off their plates enough, so we'll-- ( laughter ) >> Do we have anymore plates? >> Yeah, we have-- >> Oh, we're lucky! >> But you will have to lick off your forks! ( laughter ) Just like your mom told you. Okay, get close. Ugh! Okay! >> Great. >> Okay. Okay. ( laughter ) You know, sewing is a little bit more... ( applause ) >>
Man
Stop this! >> What? What, what, what, what? ( laughter ) >> I'm with the CIAA. >> The CIAA? What in the world is the CIAA? >> The Culinary Investigation Agency of America. ( laughter ) >> Where did you come from? >> I've been sent here to spy on you. Now, Nancy. >> Yeah? What? ( man screams ) >> Have you read any of the expiration dates on this? >> Well... >>
Mary
One. ( laughter ) >> No, I haven't. >> Nancy, you are not a chef. You don't have any of the certifications. ( laughter ) >> Look, I have the jacket. I have the embroidery. ( laughter ) I passed high school Home Ec. ( laughter ) ( applause ) ( cheers and whistles ) >> Nancy, do us all a favor. Stick to sewing. If I have to come back here, I'll have to place you under custody. Am I clear? >> You're clear. ( laughter ) Wow. ( audience boos ) Whew, he's kind of big. He's kind of mean looking. >> I think we need to lighten this up with a blonde joke. >> Okay, all right. >> What is a blonde's idea of living on the edge? >> What is a blonde's idea of living on the edge? >> Eating cottage cheese on the expiration date. ( rim shot ) ( applause ) >> Oh, boy. Well, that was a surprise. >> Yeah, it was. >> Where did he even come from? I mean, just out of the back door? >> Yeah. >> Gosh, my goodness. I didn't know. Oh, well. We've got to kind of re-group. We do have one more, poor spelling, table topping ideas. Guys? A little music. ( applause ) Well, we're on the homestretch. And it's now time for this Egg-cellent Table Topping. >> Right, so we've had this great meal. But we really should've, I guess, thought of this first. We want to trim our table. A table runner would be a great idea. >> For the swirl pie, multi-colored, not-blended-well pie. ( laughter ) >> I can see I'm never going to get over that one! ( Mary laughs ) So we have, well, let's say it's for Easter. >> Okay. >> And we have an egg design. And then, we make quite a few egg designs. And we tape them together. I go to my recycled paper bin for this, Nancy. >> And so,
the back
"A book by Mary Mulari..." You recycle your books? ( laughter ) >> Well, that's just advertising. ( laughter ) >> You cut 'em up, or what? >> Yeah. >> All right. I don't cut up my books! ( laughter ) >> Well, then, you're Nancy! ( laughter ) ( applause ) So, we used this whole idea. And this is our pattern. We tape it to felt. And we make it as long as we want to. Then, we fuse and appliqu. >> Oh, appliqu, a little zigzag stitch, a little clear thread around the edge. Oh, cute! That's all one piece? >> Oh, it's great. >> A little fabric. Right, yeah. >> Then, this season that we're coming into. >> You could do the same. >>
Audience
Ooh! >> You can make it longer, yeah, love it. ( applause ) I like this idea, the staggering. That's really nice. >> Well, thank you. Thank you. >> Good. >> We're in agreement, finally. ( laughter ) >> It's almost the end, so, you know, it's a good thing. >> Oh, yeah. >> It's a good thing. All right. >> Well, these are okay. >> But now, it's time to Kick It Up A Stitch! ( rim shot ) >> Well, just to vary things just for fun. >> For fun. >> First of all, we've chosen the theme of eggs and leaves. And we've chosen to trim hats. ( laughter ) ( applause ) >> You know, dimension is always important. >> Oh, I love it, yeah. >> And you can use... Velcro! ( laughter ) >> And here, I went to the hardware store and I bought these springs. >> Cute. ( laughter ) >> Yeah. They never know what to expect when I come in. ( laughter ) >> I would say. >> I didn't dare tell them I was going to attach them to silk flower leaves and put them on hats. >> A denim hat. >> They'd start to wonder about me! >> As if they haven't already! Well, you know, it really isn't the end of the show, because... I have one more recipe. And it's really quick. It's really quick. I know the guy from the CIAA was here. But, you know, it's pretty little. And I think we can do it, Mary. I think we can do it. >> It scares me, Nancy. I didn't like his look. And he's kind of threatening. >> I mean, he was nice looking, but he was big. >> Yeah, I know! That's what I mean. So, I'm going to take my box of chicken livers and leave, because I don't want to have anything to do with him. ( laughter ) ( applause ) >> Good. Well, if I'm just really kind of quick about this, to make Russian Tea, tea to go with this delectable dessert, the latte pie, you're going to get some... >> Nancy... ( laughter ) I warned you. ( laughter ) You're coming with me. >> Bye, guys. ( laughter ) ( applause )
