Welcome Poets Resources
OF NOTE WITH SPECIAL THANKS
The Friends of Lorine Niedecker
A starting point for anyone interested in learning more about the poetry and life of Lorine Niedecker is a local organization in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin known as the Friends of Lorine Niedecker and their companion website. The Friends are a non-profit dedicated to preserving and expanding the legacy of Niedecker as a “poet of place.”
Formally incorporated in 2004 — in the region where Niedecker spent nearly her entire life — but with organizational roots as far back as 1971, the Friends offer access to research archives and educational materials in partnership with the Hoard Historical Museum, and maintain an extensive ongoing Niedecker bibliography and research guide of scholarship on her. They publish The Solitary Plover, a semiannual newsletter and What Region?, a monograph pamphlet series in collaboration with Woodland Pattern in Milwaukee. Along with these they sponsor a fellowship, host poetry festivals, events and readings.
They are governed by a volunteer board organizing essential preservation and educational work at the intersection of the literary and the local. The production of Welcome Poets was deeply enriched by their generosity.
Hoard Historical Museum
In collaboration with the Friends, the Hoard Historical Museum in Fort Atkinson hosts and preserves a permanent Lorine Niedecker Archival Collection, to which they provided the producers of Welcome Poets unprecedented access. The series showcases approximately 300 items, original pages and photographs from the collection to help tell Niedecker’s story. The mission of the Hoard Historical Museum is to preserve, protect and promote the history and culture of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin and the surrounding area from its earliest inhabitants to the present day. Their collection and research assistance were essential to Welcome Poets.
