One For Richard

>> Music is a pulse beat. And that's how you have to teach it, like life. I never worried about making it. My mother and father told me my only job was to be the best. So that's what I worked at, and that's what I did. I'm in the midst of living, playing the way I do, when some cats look at me sideways like I can't be as great as I am with the skin I've got. I just held my head up high and played that music up and down. I knew what I wanted, and I just let those fools catch up with me. While they settled in my dust, I hit New York. >> Played with Miles and Sarah. Someone said I did a thing with Springsteen, a little with Lennon. I was in the core of that Apple for two decades and some change. In '77 I left that young man's heaven for the cold of this city. It was one thing to learn and earn, but to give what I got is what it's all worth, even more than one thing. See Jazz is an on-the-spot learning. And you theorize and you say you'll try it at that next moment on the instrument. I've been teaching these young musicians to be better than me. If I'm not giving them that education they're not really learning a thing. Why don't we try it One more time

>> My hope is that my students do that thing that was done for me, that I'm doing for them. It isn't that it's about more than the music, but that the music is life.
