MAYO
You know, we could see the disparity, we could see the conditions for Mexican-Americans in South Texas especially. And we knew the lack of representation, all these things were pretty obvious once you grew up. And there was activity, you could tell, especially Cesar Chavez. Once the news got out that there was something going on that was bigger than a strike, bigger than a labor thing, to us it seemed like a, it really became a causa, it became something that we as Mexicans could relate to and we felt it was important, a lot of us felt it was important. We felt as younger people that we had an opportunity and kind of a responsibility to try to do something, as the term was. And so we discussed it. We formed a group that same year, at the end of the year between '66, '67 called the Mexican American Youth Organization. And Willie was part of that, very important part. And we discussed a number of things, what to do, how to do it, that kinda thing. And other organizations were created because of that. It was basically a game plan, what to do, including what Willie eventually ended up doing, political and voter empowerment. It became a very big thing, and we're glad he did, we're certainly glad he did, it was tremendous, tremendous success.
