[“Feathers” by Valley Fox]
[steady bluegrass music]
Well the leaves on the trees in the summertime breeze
All on the ground come fall
A bird in spring doesn’t wait to sing
She don’t want me at all
No she don’t want me at all
Throw the feather out the window
Doesn’t mean it’s gonna end though
Dead bird’s got a friend so
She ain’t gonna sing anymore
Put a lock on the front door
What’s a bird gonna hunt for
Flatland boys are done for
She ain’t coming back anymore
No she ain’t coming back anymore
Well the leaves on the trees in the summertime breeze
All on the ground come fall
A bird in spring doesn’t wait to sing
She don’t want me at all
No she don’t want me at all
[steady bluegrass music]
Did a bird ever really sing
Or tell me I clipped a wing
Pluck feathers on a heart string
She ain’t flying here no more
Nestle up in a pine tree
Far away from a lake sea
Mountain boys can climb trees
She ain’t coming back anymore
No she ain’t coming back anymore
Well the leaves on the trees in the summertime breeze
All on the ground come fall
A bird in spring doesn’t wait to sing
She don’t want me at all
No she don’t want me at all
[steady bluegrass music]
Well the leaves on the trees in the summertime breeze
All on the ground come fall
A bird in spring doesn’t wait to sing
She don’t want me at all
No she don’t want me at all
No she don’t want me at all
No she don’t want me at all
[audience applauding and cheering]
Joe Wais: Thank you. How we doing, Mile of Music?
[audience cheering]
Yeah. Well, welcome to the Lawrence Harper Hall. We are Valley Fox, and we are based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and we are stoked to be here, playing some tunes for you guys.
[light mandolin strumming]
[“Stevie” by Valley Fox]
[gentle folk music]
Come on over won’t you stay a little while
I’ve got something to say to you
I’ll ease your mind into a single file
Though you don’t think you want it to
Say you feel something from a past
That’s long dead and gone
I swear to god it ain’t gonna last
‘Cause I promise you found your way home
Some things they come easy
Like a little girl named Stevie
Well I’m askin’ you to believe me
When I say
Oh when I say
It’ll fall into place
You’re getting older but that’s okay
We all knew one day you’d get there
But I, I kinda like, I just gotta say,
A man with some grey in his hair
Have you thought about where you’ll go
When it’s time to continue your name
Think I’m a woman that you oughta know
‘Cause I’m dreaming with you all the same
Some things they come easy
Like a little girl named Stevie
Well I’m askin’ you to believe me
When I say
Oh when I say
It’ll fall into place
[bright folk music]
Make a home by an open field
The sun and the stars takin’ turns
See them running, that’s part of the deal
Did I mention your heart it’ll burn
Porch is huggin’ on that house
Like my arms caught up on you
You’ll never ever wonder how
You didn’t keep passing on through
Some things they come easy
Like a little girl named Stevie
Well I’m askin’ you to believe me
When I say
Oh when I say
Oh when I say
It’ll fall into place
[audience applauding and cheering]
Laura Bomber: Thanks, guys. We’re Valley Fox and we’re from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This has been my third year here. I’m originally from Appleton, so I hold it really close to my heart. I’ve got my whole family working at the Mile of Music in different ways. So just growing up in the music world and now actually playing.
It’s the place to be for an original band if you live in Wisconsin.
Tori Yocum: It’s been really great. I think essentially, we’re just sharing our love of music to everyone, right? So I love music, and I started playing bass at a young age. You love music, you started playing guitar. You love music, you started on piano. And together, we create a really awesome sound. We’re just sharing that with people, and so far, the response has been really good.
[“Red Barns” by Valley Fox]
[gentle folk music]
Well the lines on the highway are broke in two
Kinda reminds me of me and you
If I had it my way I’d be there too
But a winter rain in the plains is too much for you
Just last week I met your dad
In a country bar not too far
From what we’ll never have
And there ain’t no red barns in Colorado
Only mountains made of stone
A Midwest corn farm?
Well, shows what I know
She won’t ever feel at home
[gentle folk music]
There’s a boy on the mountain
Who calls your name
The way that I did
But it ain’t the same
‘Cause he’s got a front porch where you can see
A trail ahead, a mountain bed
Far away from me
So I’ll pick a banjo where we see
A Baraboo sunrise and an eagle in the trees
And there ain’t no red barns in Colorado
Only mountains made of stone
A Midwest corn farm?
Well, shows what I know
She won’t ever feel at home
No I couldn’t blame you
No I couldn’t shame you
You know I’ve seen those stars before
I couldn’t love you
From somewhere above you
You didn’t want that sliding door
You wanted something more
And there ain’t no red barns in Colorado
Only mountains made of stone
A Midwest corn farm?
Well, shows what I know
She won’t ever feel at home
She won’t ever feel at home
[audience applauding and cheering]
That song’s by Joe. He writes some pretty cool music there. And combining forces like this, you know, it’s cool.
Yeah, thanks for hanging out, guys. We are Valley Fox, we are from Milwaukee. Come and see us again.
[audience applauding and cheering]
[“Roll on Mary” by Valley Fox]
[groovy folk music]
Well roll on blacktop
I never needed you more
Never I thought
I’d still be here knockin’ your door
Ooh let me in
Well turns out I need you again
Well roll on Mary
I’ll wed you, just save me from sin
[groovy folk music]
Well turn that corner
Let headlights make white all my eyes
Never warned her
That soon I’d be saying goodbye
Ooh let me in
The devil gon’ jump out my skin
Well roll on Mary
I’ll wed you, just save me from sin
[groovy folk music]
Well say my prayers
I don’t think I’ll make it no more
Angel fair
I’m begging you open your door
Ooh let me in
I’ll never want nothing again
Well roll on Mary
I’ll wed you, just save me from sin
I said roll on Mary
I’ll wed you, just save me from sin
[audience applauding and cheering]
