[applause] FLEMING: Good evening.
I'm Rene Fleming, and I'm here at the Gala Hispanic Theater in the Heart of our nation's capital.
And I am so excited to be celebrating New Year's Eve with you tonight right here on PBS.
Having performed in the very first United in Song broadcast back in 2020 at Mount Vernon, I couldn't be happier to be joining such an extraordinary group of talented artists.
What a difference two years makes in how we're able to come together.
Tonight, we are not only ringing in the New Year, we are joining together to share our culture through the extraordinary power of the arts.
This incredible country of ours is as diverse as it is wide, but let it be said, our shared values are stronger than anything that separates us.
And that's what you're going to see tonight.
We're taking you on a musical journey to unique and historic theaters across America, beginning on the banks of the Ohio River at the Peoples Bank Theater.
From the vaudeville acts popular when it opened in 1911 to the wide range of shows it presents today, this historic theater has become a staple of its community and woven itself into the tapestry of America's artistic history.
So now, please welcome the American Pops Orchestra, led by Luke Frazier with the one-and-only Grammy winning queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent.

I hope tonight is demonstrating just that, that no matter who you are or where you live, the arts are something that connect you to people across this great nation.
And it's in this spirit that we head back to Ohio and to the People's Bank Theater for another performance from TV and Broadway star Mandy Gonzalez.
GONZALEZ: When I was just a little girl I asked my mother What will I be Will I be pretty Will I be rich Here's what she said to me Qu ser, ser Whatever will be, will be The future's not ours to see Qu ser, ser When I grew up and fell in love I asked my lover, what lies ahead Will we see rainbows day after day Here's what my sweetheart said Qu ser, ser Whatever will be, will be The future's not ours To see Hey, hey, qu ser Qu ser Now I have a child Of my own She asks her mother What will I be Will be pretty Will I be rich Here's what I say Baby, qu ser, ser Baby, qu ser, ser Oh, whatever will be, will be Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh The future's not ours to see Yeah, yeah, yeah Qu ser, qu ser Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah Qu ser [applause] Thank you.

And for me, music is a universal language.
Music, dance and all of the arts bring us together in such a powerful way.
To close out our evening, We are ending with an American folk song I sang in the 2020 United in Song, "How can I keep from singing?"
And your eyes are not playing tricks on you.
We had choruses perform this piece in all of the cities we visited this year.
We've woven them together tonight, just for you.
On behalf of PBS and all of our performers tonight, we wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy New Year with every opportunity to enjoy the culture that binds us, and the music we love.
CHOIR: My life goes on In endless song Above Earth's lamentation I hear the real, though far-off hymn That hails a new creation Through all the tumult and the strife I hear that Music ringing It sounds an echo in my soul How can I keep from singing While though the tempest loudly roars I hear the truth, it liveth And though the darkness 'round me close Songs in the night it giveth No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that rock I'm clinging Since love is lord of heaven and earth How can I keep from singing When tyrants tremble in their fear And hear their death knell ringing When friends rejoice both far and near How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile Our thoughts to them are winging When friends by shame are undefiled How can I keep from singing How can I keep from singing?
How can I keep from singing?
How can I keep from singing?
How can I keep from singing?
