Tony Bennett: Viva Duets

(RAGS TO RICHES BY TONY BENNETT PLAYING) Quiet on the set.

PRODUCER: Okay, all quiet in there, please.

I figured out what his secret is.

He's just singing from his heart.

TONY BENNETT: If there's no emotion, there's no music.

That's my personal viewpoint.

Latin music, I automatically love it because it's got soul, it has feelings, and it's meant.

(SPEAKING ITALIAN) MARC ANTHONY: I understand the value of core progressions, and good melodies and lyrics, but then there's the interpretation of it.

And the appreciation that we have for it.

I thought maybe I'd also come in on "Beg, steal or borrow."

TONY: The music that I hear in Mexico, South America and Spain, it's very soulful, you know, and it's really based on the harmony and the melody.

So there's no tricks.

Very good.

Es un... (EXHALES) MARC: We come from a culture of people who just get it, and we're sensitive to it.

So he's always been a master.

I mean, hello!

Mr. Tony Bennett.

Cuando me siente... CHAYANNE: Eighty-six years old and he's still in the studio and all that.

You learn from that.

For me, it was a dream, you know, make a duet.

with Tony Bennett.

No.

Yeah.

You're kidding me.

(LAUGHS) Are you kidding me?

It's beautiful.

You make me cry.

Sorry about that.

(LAUGHS) VICENTICO: I love Tony, I love his voice.

And now I love the person.

Ele e um camaleao!

Sempre ali no estilo dele.

He says that you're the boss.

(LAUGHING) You're the chief.

(RAGS TO RICHES INSTRUMENTAL PLAYING) Yeah.

(SONG ENDS) I lived in Hollywood for maybe 15 years, right in Hollywood, and I met all the biggest stars, you know, from Cary Grant to Fred Astaire to Johnny Carson, all the biggest artists.

You can't help but see how they lived, and, well, Vicente, he actually topped all of them.

It's beautiful and I told him, I said, "What you have on your property, "which is about 400 acres, "is something that I've never seen any artist have."

It's amazing that he had his own stadium.

Regresa a mi No me dejes tan solo... It was a song that Dean Martin did called Return To Me.

And it's beautiful, you know.

It's a nice, simple song, you know, that everybody fell in love with.

I'm very thrilled to have this happen.

Hola, Tony!

(LAUGHS) TONY: It's unbelievable.

Hurry home, hurry home Won't you, please, hurry home...

TONY: See, he's such a magnificent performer.

You know, he'll sing very softly and then all of a sudden, boom, he... Pavarotti.

(LAUGHING) ... Por el mundo vagar... Well, you know, meeting a wonderful artist like Vicente, what I love about him is one of a kind.

Ay, pendejo!

Me emociono vindolo a l.

Sabes que Tony pinta a diario?

Ah, si?

INTERVIEWER: Every day, you paint?

TONY: Oh, yes, every day.

I like to do it today too.

INTERVIEWER: Really?

TONY: Yeah, I could do a painting.

TONY: My darling If I hurt you I'm sorry... Gracias, Tony.

Beautiful.

Grazie.

Gracias.

BOTH: Return to me Please come back, bella mia Con los brazos abiertos que estan Casi muertos sin ti Es un recuerdo que va a perdurar para mis hijos, mis nietos y bisnietos.

Thank you.

TONY: I'm going to give it to the master of the house.

He was wonderful to us.

I've been singing standards since I was a little girl with my guitar, and I would play 'em for my mom and my grandma.

And not just old Cuban standards but also standards from the United States.

I grew up on this music listening to Tony Bennett.

WOMAN: Tony, it's Gloria here.

Hey!

Yay!

How are you?

Good.

How are you?

I'm great.

You look wonderful.

Thank you so much.

You look gorgeous.

I often dress like this for the studio.

(ALL LAUGHING) WOMAN: We're gonna get a picture.

Oh, gosh, I would love that.

Oh, yeah, please come in.

In an Estefan sandwich.

MAN: Do you want to run some down first or run through it like that?

Yeah, we'll run it down and just get an idea of what's happening.

Okay, Let's do it.

All right.

Yes, sir.

GLORIA: Which is your side?

I'll be here, you be there.

GLORIA: Okay.

GLORIA: I always bring you up to everyone and I say, "This man has chops his whole life."

You set that bar high for them, Mr. Bennett.

I'm gonna be watching you like a hawk so I can match whatever you're doing or try anyway.

(LAUGHS) Same here.

No, you do your thing.

I'll follow you.

With you on a new day Yeah, that would be wonderful.

GLORIA: For the Great American Songbook, besides having amazing lyrics, and really speaking to the core of the emotions that we all share as human beings, you know, love, lack of love, bring the love back, get it away... Like, so, it's very human.

It's going to touch everybody regardless of where they come from or where they have originated.

TONY: This is terrific.

GLORIA: I'm thrilled.

Good.

Very much so.

(TONY CHUCKLING) (WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME) PLAYING) Who can I turn to When nobody needs me?

GLORIA: I was looking for a song that could really be intimate and that I could pour my heart and soul into.

And many a time in my life, I've had that thought, you know, "Who can I turn to?"

With no star to guide me And no one beside me... GLORIA: That's a beautiful thing about these kind of music and standards that you can wrap your voice around these really lush and special lyrics.

It gives you time to emote.

And something that could work together as a duet.

If you're doing a duet, the connection has to be real.

And maybe tomorrow I'll find what I'm after... She sings with a natural vibrato, and kind of reawakened me right at the moment that I was recording.

I said, "She's right and I'm wrong."

I'm gonna sing with a little more vibrato.

And so, maybe... You're never wrong.

(BOTH LAUGHING) With you I could learn to BOTH: With you on a new day But who can I turn to If you turn away?

This is nice.

I like it.

It's very, very nice.

GLORIA: Thank you.

It sounds beautiful.

TONY: I've done that song many years, Who Can I Turn To, and the way she sang it, right from the first take, I said, "Oh, it's another concept."

And it became so intimate that she made the whole thing work.

Oh, I'm so thrilled.

GLORIA: It was wonderful.

I loved it.

I loved it, too.

And maybe tomorrow Maybe tomorrow I'll find what I'm after I'll find what I'm after... GLORIA: If you're a ballad singer, there's nothing better than to wrap your vocal cords around this kind of music.

And it was such a thrill to do that with the legendary Tony Bennett, and look across and actually see him there, looking at me with those blue eyes.

I wonder if blue eyes are generic to these wonderful singers like Sinatra, Bennett.

How about her eyes?

She has beautiful eyes.

They're not blue.

But thank you.

(BOTH LAUGHING) BOTH: But who can I turn to If you turn away?

That was a nice one.

I like that take.

Don't you find there's always some magical take, it may not be perfect, but everything just clicks?

Yeah.

Right.

GLORIA: I find that when I'm recording vocals.

That happened, right, with this one.

Hey.

Nice to meet you, sir.

Nice to meet you.

TONY: Very nice.

I'm happy you're doing this.

DANI MARTIN: I appreciate the invitation.

It's amazing for me.

TONY: Well, that's wonderful.

We'll have some fun.

(ARE YOU HAVIN' ANY FUN?

PLAYING) Hey, fellow with a million smackers And nervous indigestion...

I grew up in Madrid, and my parents brought music in my life all the time.

And one of the records I listened when I am a little boy... (CHUCKLES) is Tony Bennett.

What are you gettin' out of livin'?

What good is what you've got If you're not havin' any fun?

Y si tu quieres estaras... TONY: Well, I was surprised with Dani.

We ended up doing a song that I did years ago, which is a good old jazz song called Are You Having Any Fun?

My first reaction... a smile.

Absolutely.

Little bees go out and play... DANI: For me, he's not singer, he's... (EXHALES) He's incredible.

Hey, better have some fun You ain't gonna live forever Before you're old and gray, still okay Have your little fun, son... DANI: He got a special rhythm in his voice.

And today... Yeah, he got it.

You never use headphones?

Sometimes.

DANI: Uh-huh.

Not most of the time.

When I record, I try to make it feel like it's a live performance, you know, so it comes out that way on the record, you know, There was some improvisation on it, which is a little different for any singer.

But he did it perfectly, so it's very good.

Que siempre cerca vas a estar, amor.

You know the squirrels save and save BOTH: And what have they got?

Nuts Better have some fun... DANI: When I say to my parents, "Mam, Pap, voy a cantar con Tony Bennett".

BOTH: Still okay Have your little fun, son BOTH: Have your little fun (SONG ENDS) I got it.

I got it.

That's the one.

Thank you, sir.

Thank you.

Do you want to sit here?

(LAUGHING) No, I don't want to sit.

I can sit... (ALL LAUGHING) VICENTICO: Cold, Cold Heart.

I knew the song first by Tony, but I know the version by Hank Williams.

It's a very emotional song.

The lyrics is beautiful.

TONY: Okay.

PRODUCER: You want to run it down?

Yeah, they're fine.

I'd love to.

PRODUCER: Let's do it.

(LAUGHTER) Okay?

Okay.

(COLD, COLD HEART PLAYING) I tried so hard, my dear, to show... Hank Williams was a great writer, and he wrote...

He wrote the song.

And it's become a big standard internationally.

Yet she's afraid each thing I do...

In the United States, it's a very famous country song.

Palabras dichas... VICENTICO: I love country music, and I love the mixture with the jazzy style.

Son lagrimas que caen...

I tried to write the lyrics in Spanish, respecting all the words, and I'm very happy.

BOTH: And melt her cold, cold heart Lo primero que me paso es que cuando Tony empez a cantar... me saltaron lgrimas.

Hey, Tony, you make me cry.

Oh.

(CHUCKLING) Sorry.

I'm crying again, sorry.

(LAUGHING) But now I know her heart is shackled To a memory...

When I hear someone like him sing and I said, "That's how you're supposed to sing."

He's singing from the heart, from the mind, and you could hear it right away.

BOTH: Why can't I free her doubtful mind And melt her cold, cold heart?

(SONG ENDS) Thank you.

Thank you, man.

Wonderful.

Thank you.

(INDISTINCT CONVERSATION) TONY: That was good, huh?

He's good.

He's a good singer.

TONY: Who needs me?

Just go harmony or something.

Hola, Senor Bennett.

Tony.

All right.

How are you?

Fine, fine.

I'm so glad, I'm so happy.

It's beautiful.

Hi.

PRODUCER: Hey, how are you doing?

How are you?

So it's such an honor, right?

Tony, I'm really happy.

TONY: All right.

THALIA: Let's roll.

BOTH: Just the way you look tonight Tonight THALIA: That's how we do it.

We'll follow.

I'll follow you.

(CHUCKLES) Right.

(THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT PLAYING) Cuando me sienta tan mal... THALIA: When Sony told me Tony wants you in the album, I was like, "You've got to be kidding.

"Is that for real?"

And then they sent me the song, and it was one of my favorite songs of all times.

And this is a dream come true.

Que esta noche tu Te ves... Oh, but you're lovely With your smile so warm And your cheeks so soft There is nothing for me, but to love you Just the way you look tonight (CHUCKLES) Que emocion.

Exciting.

Tus palabras tienen pasion Quitan de mi el temor And that laugh that wrinkles your nose Touches my foolish heart... Our song is The Way You Look Tonight, and it's one of my favorites of all times.

What a lucky girl, right?

With each word your tenderness grows Tearing my fear apart Y esa brisa Brisa de mar llena mi... mi corazn Oh Lovely, never, never change Keep that breathless charm BOTH: Won't you please arrange it?

'Cause I love you Just the way you look tonight Just the way you look Tonight (SONG FADES) THALIA: I almost fainted because he's always been that special voice in the soundtrack of my life because of the way he makes you feel.

And then I faint.

(CLAPPING) Que emocion!

Bravo!

TONY: Years and years ago, a girl wanted to date me, and her father took us to the Copacabana.

I was 14.

PRODUCER: Oh, is that right?

And Durante... Clayton, Jackson and Durante...

I saw the act, and I remember coming home to my mother, I said, "I'm going into show business."

I said that was the best thing I ever saw in my life.

Additional American art form, you know... Hello, Tony.

TONY: Hello.

Let's go for it.

MIGUEL BOSE: When they call me to tell me that Tony Bennett wants to sing a duet with me, it was like a flash.

(DON'T GET AROUND MUCH ANYMORE PLAYING) Missed the Saturday dance Heard they crowded the floor MIGUEL: I remember the records at home that my mother had, and among them there was always Tony Bennett.

Don't get around much anymore Pense en salir por ahi MIGUEL: Don't Get Around Much Anymore was one of the songs that by chance I had in mind of Tony Bennett since decades.

...Que no ando ya por la ciudad... TONY: We chose one of the great Duke Ellington songs that everybody danced to years in the '30s, you know, and I think almost every artist I've ever heard sing American music, they've all recorded Don't Get Around Much Anymore.

So I think it was the right song for him and I to do.

MIGUEL: When I started listening at home, I thought it was going to be easier.

Once you're there and you sing with the maestro, then you realize that it's even more difficult, and he makes it easy.

But it's not easy at all.

Why stir up memories?

Pa' que andar por ahi I might've gone, but what for?

BOTH: It's awfully different without you Don't get around much anymore No, baby, don't get around much anymore (SONG ENDS) (BOTH LAUGHING) Pretty good.

Thank you, sir.

Thank you.

Here she comes.

Everybody says you're the most beautiful singer.

No.

Eu fiquei meio... "E serio?"

Achei que ele tava brincando comigo.

Foi muito emocionante, ate porque... Tony estava muito fresco no meu ouvido.

Enfim, foi muito especial, muito lindo.

MARIA: Que bonito!

Hi.

Hi.

Hello.

(TONY WHISTLING) TONY: And we both sing that together?

She wore blue velvet Bluer than velvet was the night Softer than satin was the light From the stars MARIA: Veludo Azul Mais que o azul do seu olhar A tua boca a suspirar Com querer BOTH: Ours a love I held tightly Feeling the rapture grow BOTH: Like a flame burning brightly But when she left Gone was the glow... MARIA: A gente tava gravando e ele cantando a musica, e eu vi que ele tava anotando alguma coisa.

Dai falei: "Ah, meu Deus do Ceu, vai acabar a musica, "e ele vai falar que eu to errando tudo."

Ai ele escrevendo, acabou a musica e ele me deu o desenho.

Feeling the rapture grow BOTH: Like a flame burning brightly MARIA: A experiencia de fazer juntos e a melhor possivel.

Precious and warm a memory Through the years BOTH: And we still can see Blue velvet Through our tears (SONG ENDS) MARIA: Olhar assim de perto, ver o quanto ele canta, como ele canta bem, como ele e integro, como ele e inteiro.

Tony.

Good.

(BOTH LAUGHING) I usually sing alone.

So for me to sing with somebody... plus, it's Tony Bennett.

TONY: Hello.

Hello!

Hello!

TONY: Hey.

(LAUGHING) No, no, no, no.

CHAYANNE: How are you?

Como esta su italiano?

No.

En italiano no?

I don't even speak English.

(ALL LAUGHING) When you get with somebody like that, what you want, is to absorb all his energy.

How he gets to inspire so many people with his voice and his charisma.

No matter what you have, always you respect that.

Oh, Mr. Bennett...

I always say Mr. Bennett for respect instead of Tony.

Tony, Tony.

Everything's going to be fine.

And really, it's a pleasure for me to be with him in this project.

(THE BEST IS YET TO COME PLAYING) I'm here and I look at you and it's like, "Wow."

Ah.

Good.

Believe me.

Out of the tree of life, I just picked me a plum You came along and everything started to hum (TONY CHUCKLES) Still, it's a real good bet The best is yet to come Lo mejor llegar, todo va a estar bien...

It was beautiful because he just welcomed you with his arms open, and makes you feel there is no pressure.

We are having fun.

You think you've flown before but you ain't left the ground Cuando el viento le hable de mi amor... Wait 'til I draw you near Por los caminos de su corazn Ain't nothin' like it here Lo mejor llegar, todo va a estar bien The best is yet to come Come the day you're mine... TONY: Go!

Eso!

I love the rhythm.

I'm just moving, like... (LAUGHS, SNAPS FINGERS) Like... CHAYANNE: As a person that admired somebody that had been in the business for many years, it was very special.

Wait 'til your charms are right For these arms to surround You think you've flown before but you ain't left the ground Cuando pintemos piel con piel Wait 'til I draw you near Cuando al fin nos vea el amanecer Ain't nothin' like it here Lo mejor llegar... Tony, todo va a estar bien (LAUGHING) The best is yet to come Sera mi mujer CHAYANNE: It was very fun to see him, listening to him in front of me was special.

BOTH: Come the day you're mine Yeah.

(SONG ENDS) Sir.

Sir.

Right in there.

Very good.

Being with him was fantstico.

(LAUGHING) Fantstico!

Hey.

FRANCO: Hola, cmo ests?

FRANCO: For me, it's a beautiful song.

But I think the song, I get the idea.

And I'm not far away while I'm singing in Spanish.

But you have something you like.

Yes.

Yes.

If I don't like it, I don't sing it.

PRODUCER: Okay, good.

Believe me.

Very good.

Yes.

I don't sing it.

No, believe me, I can't do it.

I can't.

Yeah, I'm sorry about the half.

It is the right way.

I'm the same way.

I'm the same way.

Yeah, I'm that way.

Very good.

Yes.

PRODUCER: That's good.

Let's sing it then.

Okay.

Come on.

We're going inside.

FRANCO: Okay.

FRANCO: Okay.

You'll survive, right?

Okay.

FRANCO: The first thing I ask, what song I have to sing.

Oh, the good life Full of fun Seems to be the ideal... It was a nice surprise for me, really.

TONY: I liked it because I could see right away.

It's the first time I met him, but I could tell by his moves in action that he's a real great performer.

And we had a lot of fun.

FRANCO: He comes to me when one of the shots, say an instrumental part, "We're gonna dance."

And I said, "Oh, my God!"

(BOTH LAUGHING) That's beautiful.

TONY: Just be honest with yourself Don't try to fake romance Yes, the good life Eres libre, t lo puedes lograr... FRANCO: He's a very special person.

And remind me, maybe, my family, he's originally from Italy, and me too, and there's something special there.

So, please, remember I still want you BOTH: And in case you wonder why Well, just wake up Kiss the good life Goodbye FRANCO: For me, it's a present that I received from life.

Yeah.

(SONG ENDS) (LAUGHING) Oh, man.

(INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER) Yeah, that's fine.

Yeah.

Just take that tag out.

MARC: Hey, Tony.

Good to see you.

Good to see you, brother.

You good?

TONY: The minute we met, we hit it off.

And we've been great friends all these years.

Kindred spirits.

Thanks for doing this.

My absolute pleasure and another excuse to hang out with you.

We understand one another.

Yeah.

The difficult part is to actually stand next to him and not fall short.

I have someone You get to record with Mr. Bennett, don't screw it up.

Let me go act like I know what I'm doing.

Okay.

(LAUGHTER) Join the club.

Me too.

MARC: You feel more exposed than ever.

But that lasted ten seconds, and it was just Tony.

(TIMER BEEPS) WOMAN: I mixed it up.

No...

Okay.

We switch?

Okay.

I simply want to just get a concept of where you're at, where I'm at.

MARC: And I know in his heart, I think I know him well enough to where he's really rooting for you.

He really just wants you to be great.

For once in my life I have someone who needs me Someone I've needed so long MARC: For Once In My Life, not only was it one of my favorite songs, but it's one of those songs that I would walk up to Tony to say thank you.

Just thank you for that.

Somehow, some way I snuck in and I could say it's in the can and it's a part of my musical history now.

For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of Long before I knew Someone warm like you Would make my dreams come true For once in my life... MARC: I was watching Tony perform.

Seems effortless.

Not like it's hurt me before... MARC: But it's not.

And that was solidified in watching him, especially when we got to perform face to face.

He was just... And that's something that I've embraced all my life, know what words are designed to evoke.

He's just a master at it.

For once, I can say This is mine, you can't take it...

The way he accentuates it, the way he punctuates it.

It's ever so slight, but you get it.

I can make it For once in my life, I have someone who needs me... MARC: That just not only cemented my belief, and that that's the way to do it.

But it's just, I mean, to witness was just marvelous, marvelous.

It sounds great.

It's good, it feels good.

It's sort of real because covering a song is covering a song.

But then covering a song with the source, you know, I mean, it was slightly different every time... and a huge responsibility.

I'm glad it's over.

(LAUGHING) For once, I can say, this is mine You can't take it As long as I know I have love, we can make it For once in my life, I have someone BOTH: Who needs me MARC: To sing such a classic, it's the good old-fashioned way of exchange.

Okay.

Thank you.

It's in the can, as they say.

Oh, my goodness.

MARC: Exchanging.

Let's... let's live this moment together.

Let's see what you got.

The music that he sings, it's the right way to do it.

To me, it's real music.

Oh.

I'm speechless.

(CHUCKLES) I mean, right now, I'll make him an honorary Puerto Rican.

So... Great.

Thank you.

You could throw a rock anywhere in Latin America and chances are you hit a Tony Bennett fan.

VICENTICO: He is the music, the American music.

But he has a flavor, too, to all the world.

GLORIA: I don't think there's anybody that you could find anywhere that doesn't know these songs or know Mr. Bennett.

GLORIA: My mom, she's gonna flip when I tell her.

MARC: He has songs that he's recorded that are 40 years old, 50 years old.

That standup today is just masterpieces, and that's stuff that we were raised with.

I've learned, as a performer, that you try to go where the enthusiasm is.

That's the good life!

I mean, to share that song with Tony Bennett, that's a good life.

I don't even know if you know, Mr. Bennett, how important it is to us other singers to be able to sing with you.

You're a legend.

All set, sir.

TONY: The music from the Latin community has the heart and the soul and the sentimentality.

THALIA: It's like Tony is singing for us with our people, with our singers, with our favorites, and him doing that brings so much for us, it's like, how amazing that someone with that voice with that career, with that recognition, wants to sing with the people, the stars of our culture.

MARC: The honor of living to see that day that Tony Bennett, as a symbol, what he represents, shows how important it is to him to celebrate people and their approach to music.

It's an unforgettable experience to do this album.

I'm just thrilled about the fact that I'm doing something that someone else likes as much as I do, and we believe in it very much.

(RAGS TO RICHES PLAYING) TONY: I know I'd go from rags to riches If you would only say you care And though my pockets may be empty (CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKING) I'd be a millionaire... Very good.

(LAUGHS) Thank you again, sir.

Thank you very much.

Excellent.

Nice to meet you.

Thank you very much.

I like that.

I got to hug you.

Thanks to you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

VICENTICO: Your recording with Bill Evans is the best recording in the world.

Oh.

I have this recording in my heart.

You and him together... TONY: That's it.

It's the world.

That's beautiful.

He's a genius.

Yeah, yeah, but you... (WHISTLES) Beautiful.

You sound so gorgeous.

You're gonna be like that for a while, because I'd like to sketch you.

(LAUGHING) Why don't you... (BOTH LAUGHING) It ought to be there.

Thank you very much again.

No, thank you.

PHOTOGRAPHER: You're okay?

You're really scared.

And I wouldn't back up like that.

(IMPERCEPTIBLE) PHOTOGRAPHER: Wonderful.

(SONG ENDS)
