The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration
06/30/24 | 2h 42m 24s | Rating: TV-PG
In 2015, The Tragically Hip's lead singer, Gord Downie, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Having just finished their latest record, it seemed only appropriate to take it out on tour, a tour that felt like a farewell. The 15-show run culminated in a National Celebration on August 20, 2016, at the K-Rock Centre in the band’s hometown of Kingston, Ontario.

[ Cheers and applause ] Whoo!
If there's a goal that everyone remembers It was back in ol' 72 We all squeezed the stick and we all pulled the trigger And all I remember is sitting beside you You said you didn't give a...about hockey And I never saw someone say that before You held my hand and we walked home the long way You were loosening my grip on Bobby Orr Isn't it amazing anything's accomplished?
When the little sensation gets in your mind Not one ambition whisperin' over your shoulder Isn't it amazing you can do anything?
We hung out together every single moment 'Cause that's what we thought married people do Complete with the grip of artificial chaos And believing in the country of me and you Crisis of faith and crisis in the Kremlin Yeah, we'd heard all this before It's wintertime, the house is solitude with options And loosening the grip on a fake cold war Isn't it amazing what you can accomplish?
When you don't let no first nation get in your way No ambition whisperin' over our shoulder Isn't it amazing we can do anything?
Next to your comrades in the national fitness program Caught in some eternal flexed arm hang Droppin' to the mat in a fit of laughter Showed no patience, tolerance or restraint Fireworks exploding in the distance Temporary towers soar Fireworks emulating heaven 'Til there are no stars anymore Fireworks aiming straight at heaven Temporary towers soar 'Til there are no stars shining up in heaven 'Til there are no stars anymore Isn't it amazing what you can accomplish?
When we don't let no sensation get in our way No ambition whisperin' over your shoulder Isn't it amazing what you can accomplish, eh?
This one thing probably never goes away I think this one thing is always supposed to stay Yeah, this one thing doesn't have to go away No, no, no, no, no, no No, no, no, no, no, no [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you.

We all appreciate it.
We started here, as you know, and opened up to 13 people.
And our next show, we had 28.
And then the next Kingston show after that, we had six.
This is my favorite gag to do on this trip.
Weve played here a thousand times, played all the rooms.
Really glad about being here in Kingston.
We could play the university.
And we could play for the bikers.
And our idea was just that everybodys invited, everybodys involved, and tried to write that way and tried to think that way.
Um, we went through a period there where we had to work very hard to get the girls to come.
Uh, because the guys were just scrapping and being really weird.
And, uh, somehow we -- We got the girls to come back.
[ Cheers and applause ] And thank you.
Whoever did that, whoever were the cause of that one.
Um, on behalf of the boys and the men and women of our crew, um, thank you for a great tour and a great show.
[ Cheers and applause ] Really enjoyed the hell out of it.
Were going to go into the back, and were going to act like weve left, and youre going to cheer, and were going to come out and play.
[ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] See, I probably shouldnt have said that we go away and wait for applause, and then we come back and play because you didnt really even have to do anything.
Uh, and I could feel that almost.
A certain... Yeah, like you werent doing that.
You werent doing it quite like that.
But this is cool.
I think they want another song, Paul.
All right.
Bourbon blues on the street, loose and complete Under skies, so smokey blue green I can't forsake a dixie dead-shake So we danced the sidewalks clean My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?

Can't tie yourself up for a deal He said, "Hey north, you're south, shut you big mouth Down here, we do what you feel is real" Got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire Picking out the highlights of the scenery Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me I had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the banks Looked up to the Lord above and said "Hey, Gordie, thanks" Sometimes I feel so good, I gotta scream She said, "Gordie baby, I know exactly what you mean" She said, she said, I swear to God she said Yeah My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?
New Orleans is sinking, and I don't wanna swim Swim Swim [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] Well, I think that there's a problem here Your voice just don't sound right But I left myself on your answering machine Said, "I'm back in town tonight" I feel I've stepped out of the wilderness All squint eyed and confused But even babies raised by wolves They know exactly when they've been used See when it starts To fall apart Man, it really falls apart Like boots or hearts When they start They really fall apart Fingers and toes, fingers and toes Forty things we share Forty one if you include The fact that we don't care Now you've blocked off most of Main Street For your faith parade Yeah, everyone in town now, you probably all agree You're lying in a bed I made See when it starts To fall apart Man, it really falls apart Like these boots, these hearts Oh, when they start They really fall apart Well, fall apart Now you won't even let me talk to you We got some air to clear We'd probably only agree on one thing anyway That's what the hell is happening here?
Fingers and toes, fingers and toes Forty things we share Yeah, forty one if you include The fact that we don't care See when it starts To fall apart Man, it really falls apart Just like in boots, hearts When we start We really fall apart Well, fall apart [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] They shot a movie once, some kind of Elvis thing Everybody was in it, just to hear me sing Out at the speedway, some kind of Elvis thing Well, I ain't no movie star But I can get behind anything Yes, I can get behind anything Get it out, get it all out Yeah, stretch that thing Make it last, make it last At least until the supper bell rings Well, the taxi driver likes his rhythm Never likes the stops Throes of passion, throes of passion When something just threw us off Yeah, sometimes the faster it gets The less you need to know But you gotta remember The smarter it gets The further it's gonna go When you blow at high dough When you blow at high dough Baby, I feel fine I'm pretty sure it's genuine It makes no sense, makes no sense I'll take it free anytime Whoever fits her usually gets her It was the strangest thing how she moved so fast Moved so fast Out of our wedding ring Well, sometimes the faster it gets The less we need to know But we gotta remember The smarter we get The further we're gonna go When you blow at high dough When you blow at high dough Out at the speedway, same Elvis thing I can't catch her, but I can get behind anything Yes, I can get behind anything I can get behind anything Sometimes the faster it gets The less we need to know But we gotta remember The smarter we gets The further we're gonna go When you blow at high dough When you blow at high dough Yeah, blow at high dough Blow at high dough Out at the speedway Same Elvis thing Out at that speedway Same Elvis thing Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.

He cares about the people way up north that we were trained our entire lives to ignore.
Trained our entire lives to hear not a word of whats going on up there, but whats going on up there aint good.

[ Cheers and applause ] I had this dream where I relished the fray And the screaming filled my head all day It was as though I'd been spit here Settled in, into the pocket Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket Off the coast of France, dear One afternoon, 4,000 men died in the water here And 500 more were thrashing madly As parasites might in your blood Now I was in a lifeboat designed for 10, 10 only Anything that systematic would get you hated It's not a deal nor a test Nor a love of something fated death The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order And those left in the water Got kicked off our pant leg And we headed for home Then the dream ends when the phone rings "You doing all right?"
She said, "It's out there most days and nights But only a fool would complain" Anyway, Susan, if you like Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory As those fingernails scratching on my hull [ Vocalizing ] Scratching on my hull Yeah, scratching on my hull [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] I could make you scared, if you want me to I'm not prepared, but if I have to I can make you scared It's kind of what I do If you're prepared, here's what I propose to do You're in Russia and more than a million works of art Are whisked out to the woods So when the Nazis find the whole place dark They'll think God's left the museum for good I can make you scared, if that's what I do If you're prepared, if I have to If I make you scared, you pay me to That's the deal, now here's what I can do for you Now there's a focus group that can prove This is all nothing but cold calculation Tests have shown that suspicious are hostile Their lives need not be shortened Truth be told, they can live a long, long while Tickled to death by their importance If you can make me scared, if that's what you do If I'm unclear If I can get out of this thing with me and you If you feel scared, and a bit confused I got to say, this sounds a little beyond Anything I'm used to Precious few that can prove at the root This is all nothing but cold calculation Clearly entranced you're leaving back now Defanged destroyer limps into the bay Down at the beach, it's attracting quite a crowd As kids wade through the blood out to it to play Okay, you made me scared You did what you set out to do I'm not prepared You really had me going there for a minute or two He said, you made me scared, too And I wasn't sure I was getting through I got to go It's been a pleasure doing business with you [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] He said, "I'm fabulously rich Come on just let's go" She kind of bit her lip "Jeez, I don't know" But I can guarantee There'll be no knock on the door I'm total pro That's what I'm here for I come from downtown Born ready for you Armed with will And determination, and grace, too The secret rules of engagement Are hard to endorse When the appearance of conflict Meets the appearance of force But I can guarantee There'll be no knock on the door I'm total pro here That's what I'm here for I come from downtown Born ready for you Armed with skill and it's frustration And grace, too Him, here Now, ugh!
Him, here Now, ugh!
[ Screams ] [ Screams ] [ Screams ] [ Screams ] [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] Okay, we're officially into uncharted waters.
We never do third ones.
So let's see what happens.
They don't know how old I am They found armor in my belly From the sixteenth century Conquistador, I think They don't know how old I am They found armor in my belly Passion out of machine revving tension Lashing out at machine revving tension Rushing by the machine revving tension Morning broke out the backside of a truck-stop The end of a line a real, rainbow-likening, luck stop Where you could say I became chronologically fucked up Put ten bucks in just to get the tank topped off Then I found a place, it's dark and it's rotted It's a cool, sweet kinda place Where the coppers won't spot it And I destroyed the map, I even thought I forgot it However, every day I'm dumping the body It'd be better for us if you don't understand It'd be better for me if you don't understand Yeah And I found a place, it's dark and it's rotted It's a cool, sweet kinda place Where the coppers won't spot it And I destroyed the map that I'd carefully dotted However, every day I'm dumping the body It'd be better for us if you don't understand It'd be better for us if you don't understand It'd be better for me if you don't understand Let me out Let me out Let me out Let me out Let me out Let me out Let me out [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] The beautiful lull The dangerous tug We get to feel small From high up above And after a glimpse Over the top The rest of the world Becomes a gift shop The pendulum swings For the horse like a man Out over the rim Is ice cream to him The beautiful lull The dangerous tug We get to feel small But not out of place at all We're forced to bed But we're free to dream All us human extras All us herded beings And after a glimpse Over the top The rest of the world Becomes a gift shop I don't know what to believe Sometimes I even forget And if it's a lie Terrorists made me say it The beautiful lull The dangerous tug We get to feel small From high up above From high up above From high up above From high up above From high up above From high up above Good night, Marysville.
Good night, all.
We're gonna give you one more.
And then we're gonna hit the road.
[ Vocalizing ] Whoo, whoo, whoo!
[ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
First we'd climb a tree And maybe then we'd talk Or sit silently And listen to our thoughts With illusions of someday Cast in a golden light No dress rehearsal This is our life And that's where the hornet stung me And I had a feverish dream With revenge and doubt Tonight, we smoke them out You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century Stare in the morning shroud And then the day began I tilted your cloud You tilted my hand Rain falls in real time And rain fell through the night No dress rehearsal, this is our life But that's when the hornet stung me And I had a serious dream With revenge and doubt Tonight, we smoked them out You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century You are ahead by a century And disappointing you is gettin' me down [ Song ends ] [ Cheers and applause ] Thank you.
You're wonderful.
Thank you for that.
[ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] [ Cheers and applause ] I would say you've been told You work me against my friends and you'll get Left out in the cold It's the same mistake It's been a long time running It's been a long time coming It's been a long, long, long time running It's well worth the wait It's well worth the wait It's well worth the wait It's well worth the wait
