Textile folk artist shares tradition and healing

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:I like abstract forms. Yeah, I think it’s more freestyle exploration, being inspired by nature and colors.

My name is Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega. I’m from Mexico City, and I’m a textile artist.

Coming from Mexico, specifically from Mexico City, if you go out to the streets, there are a lot of colors everywhere, you know? Like going to a market, the mercado or a tianguis, like all the fruit, all the sounds even. So I always try to bring some of that to my exploration and to my creations.

I studied communication, and in 2017, that year, there was a big earthquake that hit the city. And I was, after that, experiencing anxiety attacks, panic attacks, so I was looking for an activity to help me to, like, calm me down.

All these loop movements with the thread and the needle, that helped me to calm my nerves.

So that not only helped me to, like, heal that really big thing in my life, but also, like, I was, like, hooked. I wanted to keep doing it.

This is, like, a flower. And I just love these, like, signs that people put, like, in the markets.

Since I’m here, I found that I’m not the only one having these feelings and these thoughts, right? So, we are always thinking about home, our casa.

I think community activities, community spaces or projects can help us, like, heal that.

The way I connect with the community right now is through my workshops. The Da de los Muertos celebration that we organize in Viola, Wisconsin, and that event is pretty special for me because of the meaning of the celebration. We believe that starting the night of October 31 to November 2, the dead temporarily come back to visit the living from the Mictlan, that is the underworld of Aztec mythology.

You know, when you migrate to a new country, there is this process of saying goodbye to this comfort zone, this, like, amazing space that you know. And then, like, start these new dreams and this journey to a new place.

And I’ve learned, since I moved to the U.S., to try to carry this sense of home with you all the time.

Me encantan las formas abstractas. Creo que es una exploracin con estilo libre, inspirarme en la naturaleza y los colores.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Mi nombre es Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega. Soy de la Ciudad de Mxico y soy artista textil.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Si eres de Mxico, en especial de la Ciudad de Mxico, al salir a las calles ves colores por todas partes. Si vas a un mercado o un tianguis ves una variedad de fruta e incluso sonidos. Siempre trato de llevar algo de eso a mi exploracin y a mis creaciones.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Estudi ciencias de la comunicacin y en 2017 un gran terremoto azot la ciudad. Despus de eso empec a tener ataques de ansiedad y pnico, as que busqu una actividad que me ayudara a calmarme. Todos los movimientos con el hilo y la aguja me ayudaron a calmar los nervios.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Eso no solo me ayud a sanar ese momento tan duro en mi vida, sino que adems me atrap y quise seguir con ello. Esta es como una flor. Me encantan los letreros que la gente pone en los mercados.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Desde que estoy aqu descubr que no soy la nica con estos sentimientos y pensamientos. Por eso siempre pensamos en el hogar, en nuestra casa. Creo que las actividades, espacios o proyectos comunitarios nos ayudan a sanar.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Mi forma de conectar con la comunidad ahora es a travs de mis talleres. La celebracin del Da de Muertos que organizamos en Viola, Wisconsin, es muy especial para m por el significado de la festividad.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Creemos que desde la noche del 31 de octubre hasta el 2 de noviembre los muertos regresan por un momento a visitar a los vivos desde el Mictln, que es el inframundo de la mitologa azteca.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Cuando uno migra a otro pas, existe un proceso para despedirse de esa zona de comodidad, de ese espacio increble que uno conoce, para comenzar nuevos sueos y un viaje hacia un nuevo lugar.

Ireri Andrea Muiz Ortega:
Desde que me mud a Estados Unidos, he aprendido a siempre tratar de llevar ese sentido de hogar conmigo. Lo que para m es el hogar.
