There's a melody somewhere inside of me I can hear it but can't get it out of me In my head it is soaring, but when it comes out it, is all the same note There's a melody somewhere inside of me I can hear it but can't get it out of me In my head, it is soaring, but when it comes out, it is all the same note There's a melody somewhere inside of me I can hear it but can't get it out of me In my head, it is soaring, but when it comes out, it is all the same note Instinct and discipline Like taking your medicine You gotta push through the unpleasantness Give it some time Just let it go Just close your eyes And soon you will know Give it some time Just let it go Just close your eyes And soon you will know

The girl works at the store, sweet Jane St. Clair Was dazzled by her smile while I shopped there It wasn't long before I lived with her I sang her songs while she dyed my hair Jane, divided, but I can't decide which side I'm on Jane decided only cowards stay, while traitors run Jane Jane
Instrumental break
I'd bring her gold and frankincense and myrrh She thought that I was just making fun of her She made me feel I was 14 again That's why she thinks it's cooler if we'd just stay friends Jane Doesn't think a man could ever be faithful Jane Isn't giving me a chance to be shameful Jane Ooh, ooh Jane I wrote a letter, she should have got it yesterday That life could be better by being together Is what I cannot explain to Jane

"Manchild" plays
There's wisdom In every little thing you say And I'm wrong And getting wronger every day I need you Oh, you know I'll never break your heart I hear you Could you repeat the last part? Darling You're talking to a man now You're talking to a man now, child Speak slowly Speak slowly Sweetheart What do you think I do all day? I make art When inspiration blows my way Oh, oh, the shouting That's right Well, I'm getting kind of used to that But this doubting my intentions Well, honey, that just makes me sad Oh, darling Darling You're talking to a manchild A manchild You're talking to a Manchild now Speak slowly Speak slowly Darling Darling You're talking to a manchild A manchild You're talking to a Manchild now Speak slowly Speak slowly Ah-ooh You ask for conversation Ah-ooh Then ask for understanding Sha-la-la-la And then you say Ah-ooh You want a man, yeah Sha-la-la-la-la Now look how hard I'm trying I let you watch me crying I'm just like you, but I'm a man Yes, I am, and I can't help but love you so
Instrumental break
I know you You think I'm just a lazy jerk But I miss you Babe, when you're away at work, oh-oh And genius That's right It can strike a man at any time So I'll just be here waiting Now could we Cut it with the heavy sighs? Oh, darling Darling You're talking to a manchild A manchild You're talking to a Manchild now Speak slowly Speak slowly Darling Darling You're talking to a manchild A manchild You're talking to a manchild now Speak slowly Speak slowly

So, um, I live in the United States now, which was not something I ever envisioned myself doing, but I live there. I married a woman who's American, and I've learned that there are differences between Americans and Canadians, which we are all taught here in Canada...
Light applause
...but there are a lot of similarities, too. So, one day when I was sitting, looking at my phone, and I saw a bunch of yahoos marching in Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting... "Jews will not replace us!"... the first thing I thought was, "That could happen anywhere at this time in history.
This could happen in Canada. This could happen anywhere in the United States. It's happening in Europe." And the second thing I thought was... "I'm a Jew.
I would totally replace those guys!"
Laughter
So I wrote this song.
Applause
It's about to get nice It's about to get real nice Right now Right now Don't it make you swell with pride To learn there's bigotry on many sides? White noise Oh, yeah White noise Oh, yeah Apparently, to fix your nation You've got to run it like a corporation The kind you don't mind burning to the ground I've had to learn to bite my tongue Or they'll send me back where I came from I'm telling you as an immigrant and a Jew That I'd be more than glad to replace you
Instrumental break
Throw away the Bill of Rights For anyone who isn't white White noise Right now White noise Right now Let's have a second Civil War Let's have a second Civil War That's what the Second Amendment's for White noise Oh, yeah White noise Oh, yeah Said the snowflake to the nationalist "I won't cease till you desist" "You raise your flag, I'll raise my fist" "Resist, resist, resist!"
Instrumental break

As captain of this band of merry sailors, I'm a black mark, I'm a failure, but before you watch me drown I'm relinquishing command for something I don't understand This man's about to turn his whole life upside down I set a course for a new shore New shore It looked the same as the one before And I And I forgot what I'd been sailing for And why I thought this time would be different I do most of this by feeling, let go of the wheel, the constellations do the navigation on their own Whilst yearning for adventure, dreading censure in absentia I would rather be at sea than be alone I set a course for a new shore New shore It looked the same as the one before And I And I forgot what I'd been sailing for And why I thought this time would be different Off the charts we drew They said there wasn't anything but fairy tales I showed them it was you I told them you were everything A fairy tale could be The boat sails by Mm, mm, mm The shore remains, and so do I I swear this time will be different
Instrumental break
I settled here on a new shore New shore My lips were blue, and my legs were sore And I forget if I was pushed or I jumped overboard And after all this time, what's the difference? Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh Oooooooh Ooh-ooh-ooh Ahhhhhh

"War on Drugs" plays
She likes to sleep with the radio on So she can dream of her favorite song The one that no one has ever sung since she Was small She'll never know that she made it up She had a soul, and we ate it up Blown away like a paper cup The music falls The only flaw in her detailed plan Is where she wins back the love of her man Everyone knows that he's never coming back He took her heart, and she took his name He couldn't stand taking all the blame He left her only with guilt and shame, and then She cracked Won't it be dull When we rid ourselves of all these demons haunting us To keep us company? In the dream I refuse to have She falls asleep in a lukewarm bath We're left to deal with the aftermath again On behalf of humanity I will fight for your sanity How profound such profanity can be Won't it be dull When we rid ourselves of all these demons haunting us To keep us company? Won't it be odd To be happy like we always thought we're supposed to feel But never seem to be? Near where I live, there's a viaduct Where people jump when they're out of luck Raining down on the cars and trucks below They put a net there to catch their fall Like that'll stop anyone at all What they don't know is when nature calls, you go Yeah, you go They say that Jesus and mental health Are just for those who can help themselves What good is that when you live in Hell on Earth?
From the very fear that makes you want to die Is just the same as what keeps you alive Oh, it's way more trouble than some suicide is worth Won't it be dull When we rid ourselves of all these demons haunting us To keep us company? Won't it be odd To be happy like we always thought we're supposed to feel But never seem to be? Hard to admit I fought the war on drugs My hands were tied, and the phone was bugged Another died, and the world just shrugged it off

Thank you. So, I know you knew you were coming for a selection of both new songs and old Barenaked Ladies ones, but you probably didn't know you were just coming for a collection of the most obscure and depressing ones.
Laughter
It was an odd demand by public television, but I'm up for it.
Laughter
No, I'm not just about the obscure, depressing ones. No. I like the up-tempo ones. I like to feel good.
I think there's a time and a place. I just read an article a couple days ago that people who are depressed actually feel better after listening to sad songs, and I believe that. I think that's true, 'cause, you know, if I'm depressed, which I am sometimes, if you were to play "Kokomo" for me, I think that might push me over the edge.
Laughter
Have you guys noticed that there's somebody else onstage now? What the...?

Back in the day... I used to get recognized a lot when I'd go out. And sometimes it was -- You know, at the beginning, it was novel, and then it was occasionally obtrusive -- not intentionally, but, like, sometimes I'd be yelling at my kids in the supermarket and someone would be like, "Hey!" Luckily, it was before the days of selfies. But so now when it happens, it's -- I'm -- I'm -- I'm cool with it.
In fact, I-I love it. It's like it's novel. And people are very nice. Usually it happens, like, you know, I'm in line at a Starbucks or something and someone will come up to me and they'll say, "Hey!
Are you that guy?" And I'll go, "Yeah. Yeah, that's me." And they'll say... "Are you okay?"

And I go, "Yeah, I'm doing great. Yeah, thanks." And they say, "Oh, good. Are you, uh -- Are you still doing music?" And I go, "Yeah. I'm on tour right now, had an album out last year and touring around -- you know, did a couple U.S.
tours and a couple U.K. tours, doing a Canadian tour right now, and back on the road again after that and making a new record after that. I wrote a musical, doing a TV special, all these --" And I can see their eyes glaze over 'cause I think they just wanted to know if I worked there or not.

This is where we used to live Broken glass, broke and hungry Broken hearts and broken bones This is where we used to live Why did you paint the walls? Why did you clean the floor? Why did you plaster over The hole I punched in the door? This is where we used to live Why did you keep the mousetrap?
Why didn't you keep the dish rack? These things used to be mine I guess they still are, I want 'em back Broke into the old apartment 42 stairs from the street Crooked landing, crooked landlord Narrow laneway filled with crooks This is where we used to live Why did they pave the lawn? Why did they change the lock? Why did I have to break it?
I only came here to talk This is where we used to live How is the neighbor downstairs? How is her temper this year? I turned up your TV And stomped on the floor just for fun I know we don't live here anymore We bought an old house on the Danforth She loves me, and her body keeps me warm And I'm happy there But this is where we used to live I broke into the old apartment I tore the phone out of the wall Only memories, fading memories Blending into dull tableaux I want them back I want them back This is where we used to live I want them back This is where we used to live I want them back Oooooh, ooh-ooh I want them back
