-One thing that I love about what's happened in my career is that when I first came out, I was never heralded as the new Otis Redding, the new Sam Cooke, the new Teddy Pendergrass or Smoky Robinson.

I wasn't the new anybody.

I was Luther.

Because I want to clue you in what we did to put tonight together.

Because we're filming a TV special for PBS, which will debut my new album.

I have a new album coming out soon.

But Lisa, she's now on tour with The Rolling Stones.

Yeah, so when we called her, we said, "Lisa, on Tuesday, September 13th, we are going to film a TV special.

Can you come?"

And all signs were go, all signs were go because The Rolling Stones did not have a gig on the 12th, on Monday the 12th, which was yesterday.

All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a week and a half ago, they add a gig to their tour.

So then we have to rent her private plane to take her from the stage in Chicago to London, here.

She got in today at 6: 00, learned all the new steps, all the new choreography, five new songs on the tape recorder on the plane.

And she's here now, and that's why we love her to death.

I define classic as songs which stand the test of time, song which are not flavor of the month songs, songs that the generations can share.

So I figure that when we premiered it, we would do it a special event, at a classic venue.

And when I think of really classic venues, there are only a few places that come to mind, you know?

And the Royal Albert Hall is at the top of that list.

And I was more than anxious to get here.

I think it's a big feather in my cap that I can get an audience to sit still and just listen.

So this is the perfect place.

People always say to me, "Boy, Luther, I bought the new album, I love it.

Oh, but 'House Is Not a Home' kills me."

And they say, "Oh, I got the new album, and you know what I love?

I love 'Superstar.'"

And, "Oh, Luther, I bought the new album, and, you know, I played 'How Deep Is Your Love' 10 times in a row."

Then it was suggested to me that I do an album, since people react like that to my interpretation of preexisting songs, of cover songs, an entire collection of cover songs.

And I loved the idea.

It gave me a chance to pay tribute to some of the artists who did the songs as well as some of the songs themselves.

You know, when I used to sing background for Roberta Flack, she, more than anybody, encouraged me to make my own record and have my own career.

And I owe her a lot.

You know?

A lot of the music that I sing has changed, you know, and it varies.

But there's always been a variety of styles and approaches to the music that I chose to sing.

So I don't think that much has changed, and I also don't think that change is some necessary evil that you have to experience, otherwise, you're stagnating as an artist.

I never believed that either, you know?

I listened to early Barbra Streisand, and I know it's her, and I listened to her on her special the other night on TV, and I knew it was her.

And although her voice has matured, you know, the whole issue of the stamp being put on it is really stylistic more than a conscious effort to change or to evolve.

You evolve naturally.

Evolving -- Evolution is nothing that you can effect by a concerted effort to sound different or to sound hip.

You know, I consider my career as a vision that I have.

It's almost like the cake that your mother bakes, you know?

It makes a difference how much of this she puts in and a pinch of that and a pinch of this.

You know, it's more than a cake.

It's kind of a vision.

-So, you know, there's a 10:00 aerobics class that I'm gonna go to, and I can just make it.

[ Laughs ] -When I made "Never Too Much," my first record, "real singers" were frowned upon because music was really the producer's vehicle.

And what worked for me was that I was one of the first real singers to emerge out of that disco period.

And it made me kind of singular in what I contributed to music at that point.

You know, when I was a kid buying records by The Shirelles, by Aretha Franklin, by Dionne Warwick, one of the first things that appealed to me were the background vocals.

And that remained with me.

The criteria for choosing background vocalists who sing with me is that they understand the language of the music -- not only the technical part of it, but the actual language.

So for us, it's like talking.

And the - And the - And the eagle flies -Ahh.

- And there's a rose -I sounded just like that yesterday when I was understudying the note.

-You know what I'm saying?
