Love Train: The Sound of Philadelphia - Live in Concert

[For The Love of Money by The O'Jays] [audience cheers and applauds] Ladies and gentlemen, please join us and take a front row seat for a special musical celebration.

We wanna take you back in time, to when hometown radio and vinyl records ruled the day.

When your local DJ hand-picked great new songs and dedicated them to the one you love.

It was a time of innovation, struggle and change.

When music opened up hearts and minds, bringing a nation together, under a groove and onto the dance floor.

You're gonna hear nothing but timeless hits, as fresh today as when they came out of a small Philadelphia recording studio under the direction of two young, visionary music producers -- Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

Their family of singers, musicians, writers, engineers and arrangers gave birth to the glorious and soulful sound of Philadelphia.

People all over the world, get ready for performances by Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famers The O'Jays, Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, Jerry Butler, and many more.

Now get up on your feet and join in!

[applause] This particular song, we consider it to be our theme song.

And words that we try to live by, from day to day.

This song was written by Mr. John Whitehead, who passed away.

But the words are still here.

We have to be strong.

We have to be united.

And we have to be a loving PBS family, forever.

Wake up everybody no more sleeping in bed No more backward thinkin' time for thinkin' ahead The world has changed so very much From what it used to be There is so much hatred, war and poverty Oooohhhhh Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way Maybe then they'll listen to whatcha have to say They're the ones who's coming up And the world is in their hands When you teach the children Teach 'em the very best you can Teach 'em the very best you can The world won't get no better if we just let it be The world won't get no better we gotta change it yeah, Just you and me Wake up all the doctors make the ol' people well They're the ones who suffer and who catch all the hell But they don't have so very long before the Judgement Day So won'tcha make them happy before they pass away?

Wake up all the builders time to build a new land I know we can do it if we all lend a hand The only thing we have to do is put it in our mind Surely things will work out they do it every time Every time The world won't get no better if we just let it be The world won't get no better we gotta change it yeah, Just you and me Change it yeah Change it yeah Just you and me Change it yeah Move it along I need some help y'all!

Move it along Yeah, everybody, put your hands together!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We've got the groove!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We're on the move!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We've got the groove!

There's been so many things that's held us down But now it looks like things are finally comin' around We really don't have, no where to go Ask us where we're going, they don't know But we won't let nothin' hold us back, We're putting ourselves together, We're polishing up our act!

If you felt we've been held down before, I know you'll refuse to be held down anymore!

Don't you let nothing, nothing, Stand in your way!

I want y'all to listen, listen, To every word I say, every word I say!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We're on the move!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We've got the groove!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We're on the move!

Ain't no stoppin' us now!

We've got the groove!

I know you know someone that got a negative vow, And if you're trying to make it they only push you aside You really don't have, no where to go Ask them where they're going, they don't know But we won't let nothin' hold us back, We're gonna put ourselves together We're gonna polish up our act!

And if you've ever been held down before, I know you'll refuse to be held down anymore!

[cheers and applause] Y'all still awoke?

[applause] Have you enjoyed yourself so far?

[audience cheers] I'd like to say something.

God bless the day that I met Gamble and Huff.

From that way, we were able to do the things that we wanted to do.

And they made my life a little bit better.

'Cause me and Walter, we come from the gospel church, and they were able to interpret what we were doing and put it on record.

And then we made songs like, 'For the Love of Money', 'Back Stabbers', a whole lot of good songs.

And these brothers have been true to the code.

We've had our problems, but we've worked through them.

But this song right here epitomizes what they're about, and what we're about.

It's all about love.

And we got to love one another.

And then we say, Gonna pick up the babies Pick up the babies Get on board and ride Let them ride Got to pick up the brothers Pick up the brothers Don't need no ticket to ride Ride Got to pick up the fathers Pick up the fathers They got the money to buy the ticket to ride Let 'em ride Got to pick up the mothers Pick up the mothers Get on board and ride And then we said Ooooh oooooh Ooooh oooooh Ooooh oooooh Ooooh oooooh People get ready There's a train a-coming You don't need no ticket You just thank the Lord All you need is faith To hear the diesels a-humming You don't need no ticket You just get on board Come on, y'all!
