The Spirit of Rory: Live From Cork
[solemn music] - [Narrator] Think back to Ireland in the 1970's, dull and gray, a seriously oppressed state.
We had to behave ourselves, keep our hands by our side, and not get notions.
It was sucking the life out of us.
And along came this hellraiser who must be the devil himself.
He released us and set us free.
He is much more than a musician.
He was our catharsis.
He was a pioneer, a pilgrim.
He is like our patron saint.
No one dared to explore or develop like he did.
And he set the way for all the musicians coming up behind him, especially in his hometown Cork.
[solemn music continues] - When you take something as delicate as Rory Gallagher and his legacy, you've gotta make sure you've got the right man who can deliver.
I asked other people in the music industry, how do you feel about Joe Bonamassa doing the thing for Rory Gallagher?
'Cause people are very, very precious nowadays, and everybody unanimously, "That's the man."
[energetic guitar music] [audience applauding and cheering] - The way this happened was I get a call from Peter Aiken, the biggest independent promoter in Ireland today, and Peter calls me and he makes a pitch to me.
"Would Joe Bonamassa be interested in doing the Rory Gallagher celebration, celebrating Rory Gallagher's 30 years since his passing?"
I thought it was a great idea, but more importantly, I knew how much Joe Bonamassa loved Rory Gallagher.
[energetic guitar music] [audience applauding and cheering] - And I said, "If I thread the needle and do it just right to where I tribute enough of it to where it sounds a little bit like him, but make it my own, I could play my way out of this one."
But at the end of it all, to see what it means to Donald and Daniel and to those people out there, it's worth the five armchair quarterbacks they're gonna say, "Well, there's only one Rory Gallagher."
It's like, well, I'm telling you right now, straight to the camera, "There's only one Rory Gallagher."
- He's unequaled.
There's nobody quite like Rory.
You know, there's lots of great guitarists in the world, millions of great guitarists.
But Rory's unique and always will be.
- Lots of reasons for his popularity is his guitar playing, his songwriting.
He was an entertainer.
He was a good showman.
- Electrifying, a deep, profound commitment to the blues, rock, and roots music.
- His playing tells a story.
Regardless of the vocals, just on the music itself and just the way that he approached improvisation.
It all had a place to go.
- It's extra special to do this project at this time on Rory's 30th anniversary of his passing in Cork.
You know, where his adopted town where everyone absolutely loves him.
- When you talk about Rory Gallagher's legacy, especially over here, he was everybody's working class hero.
- [Narrator] Rory Gallagher changed our DNA, his timing was impeccable to shift human consciousness.
I think in a sense he sacrificed his life for it.
