We're heading off to an aboriginal elder center I'd like to acknowledge our traditional elders aunties and uncles and past, present, and future also.
Traditional Didgeridoo Music
The didgeridoo is an instrument that's been used for thousands of years in cultural ceremony. It's the heartbeat of Australian culture. As artists, we're storytellers. We're passing on a culture and our identity.
Saxophone Playing "Amazing Grace"
It's very important to give back to the elders because they've passed their journey onto us you know, as youngsters. And it's our duty to actually embrace that knowledge.

Crowd Clapping And Cheering
I think the fact that Australia is an island down in the South Pacific. It's as far away from everything else as you can get, really. It can leave musicians in Australia feeling a little isolated. A little irrelevant to the rest of the world. So to host International Jazz Day in Australia and have these musicians come from all over the world and make that, for just a moment, the center of the jazz world. I think will mean a lot to Australia and jazz musicians. And I think it's one of the beautiful things about International Jazz Day. It will leave an impression that will last a long time. We are part of a world community. We're a part of a family, and the rest of the family has come over to celebrate with us and that connection will remain. That feeling will remain. Well jazz is the hallmark of freedom and improvisation in music. And of course it has broadcast itself to the world now which is why it's International Jazz Day. Which is an interesting return to its source because it came from French influence and Spanish influence and Creole influence and African influence. From that came a specific thing, and now it goes out again into the world and embraces all.
Dramatic Trumpet Finale
"Have You Called Her Today"
Well there's another universal thing that all the jazz musicians have to know about. 'Cause we travel so much, we look each other in the eye at least once a day. Mmm try to find the sweet spot. But there's always one question. Always one important thing if you wanna have a home to come to. Did you call her today Did you call her today Did you make time to say That you need her today Those girls rely on a message Some text or tweet One call can give your expressage Something much more sweet So did you call her today You should call her today From a stop on the way At the club or cafe Everyday you're away Make the time to just say That your babe is your babe Did you call her today I did that touring live now Its a gasser It's just what I asked for Blowing hosannas on the stand with Getokan Dazzle in a band Is unsurpassed her You get out and shake that moneymaker night and day You circle the world by tip and tempos And sail away with every horn That's lookin' for something Some unbeatable signature figure that signals a swinger So big mad stuff fade no thing for cats to swing I like my dirty greasy no fool soul food From the old school where vibe is the rule Find that from the sweetheart street I like feeling that beat And tapping my feet From my seat to high fine vinyl on the sweet repeat Ooh way
Piano Solo
Ah! Ha! Welcome! Watch out now, watch out now! Woo! Ha ha! That's Mr. Eric Reed! So did you call her today You should call her today From a stop on the way At the club or cafe Everyday you're away Make the time to just say That your babe is your babe Did you call her today Oh you should call her today, son

We don't need to understand each other's languages actually and we can make music. When I was studying at the Conservatory in Amsterdam, I was the only girl and right now, you can see a big change. There are a lot of female players around and luckily, that's definitely becoming a more normal thing. You need a lot of listening, opening yourself to the situation, having not many presumptions about the other player but just giving the music a chance, the situation the chance to create something. This is for me, what is jazz about. April 30th, International Jazz Day. Each year, the celebration has gotten larger and larger. The kind of impact that International Jazz Day has now, I had no idea that that was gonna happen in the beginning. There's so many events. They're not all just concerts or jam sessions, they're educational events. All this is, is just an exchange. You guys already play well, we're just gonna try to take it another notch higher. -

There are panel discussions, there's dialogues. Music is a great great healer. There are outreach programs in hospitals. It's what the spirit of International Jazz Day is about, to bring people together, to give them a sense of hope and empowerment. It's something that's really about the heart. Darling, oh darling You are always You are needed And your tenderness Is needed too Oh, and it seems, oh it seems I'm never tired I'm never tired of loving you Ooh, loving you Never, never Never was a feeling stronger, no You see, you see I'm standing here aching Aching for the sweet things that you do Hey, and it seems my love, it seems I'm never tired I'm never tired of loving you Ohh no Hey Should the mountains Crumble, crumble to ashes And if the rain If the rain should cease to fall And if the rivers If they stop their flowing Don't you know, you'd still Still be my all Oh yes you would And if the clouds If they cover the sky So that the sunlight The sunlight, it won't get through Still, I'd never Still Of this one thing Of this one thing I'm sure That I never tire of needing you Ohhh, I never I never tire Of loving You, yeah -

Any opportunity to learn anything from anybody musically is worthwhile. No matter what level they're on or what they, how accomplished they are what they may or may not know, everybody knows something. Everybody has an experience 'cause music and especially improvisation it's all from life experience. So everybody has their paths and their journey and something to share; something to say, and there's room for everybody to do so. You know, I think the ways of jazz expresses and promotes peace is when you have a group of musicians together. The music really transcends any culture or any language or differences, so, and that way I find jazz to be very peaceful. -

I think it represents humanity and, and, in the greatest way. It's all there in the music. A sense of community, but also the recognition of the individual, and how the individual can contribute to the community. That's jazz. Every year we close out our concert with Imagine. The timeless, peace anthem, written in 1971, by the legendary, creative genius, John Lennon. Wrapped in a gorgeous melody, John Lennon's revolutionary and beloved poem offers all of us hope for a peaceful and just world. And now, please welcome our global all-stars, back to the stage, for Imagine. Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope some day you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say I'm a dreamer But I know I'm not the only one I hope some day you will join us And the world will be as one C'mon let's hear you.
