You've got to get up every morning. With a smile on your face. And show the world. All the love in your heart. People gonna treat you better. You're gonna find, yes you will. That you're beautiful. As you feel. Waiting at the station. With a workday wind a-blowing. I've got nothing to do. But watch the passers-by. Mirrored in their faces. I see frustration growing. And they don't see it showing. Why do I? You've got to get up every morning. With a smile on your face. And show the world. All the love in your heart. Then people gonna treat you better. You're gonna find, yes you will. That you're beautiful. As you feel. Carole I have often asked myself. The reason for the sadness. In a world where tears are just a lullaby. If there's any answer maybe love can end the madness. Maybe not oh, but we can only try. You've got to get up With a smile on your face. And show the world. All the love in your heart. Then people gonna treat you better. You're gonna find, yes you will. That you're beautiful. You're beautiful. You're beautiful. As you feel.

Mr. President, Mrs. Obama, Mrs. Robinson, Ladies and Gentlemen. Carole came out of the tradition of the "tin pan alley brill building tune smith." She gave voice to a generation and
what a generation it was
The Drifters, The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Elvis and Aretha, the King and the Queen. She put music in all of their mouths. I was touring with Carole in the early '70s when she found her own voice as a performer. I was on stage with her at the Troubadour the first time anyone every heard "You've Got A Friend," my own number one Carole King hit. That song has carried me around the world and to the White House tonight. Hats off to the Library of Congress for choosing to honor her gift to us all. There is no more deserving and appropriate recipient of this Gershwin Prize. Ladies and gentlemen, hats off to Carole King.

When this getting me down. And people are just too much. For me to face. I'm gonna climb way up to the top of the stairs. And all my cares they just drift right into space, yea. Oh on the roof it's peaceful as can be. And there the world down below it don't bother me. Oh, no, no. So when I come back home feelin' tired and beat. I'm gonna go up where the air is fresh and sweet. I'll get far away from the hustling crowds. And all that rat race noise down in the street. Oh on the roof that's the only place I know. Look at the city baby. Where you just have to wish to make it so. Let's go up on James And at night the stars, they put on a show for free. And darling you can share it, share it all with me. Keep a-telling you that right smack dab in the middle of this town. Well I found a paradise that's just about trouble-proof. And if this old world starts getting you down. There's room enough for two up on my roof. Up on my roof, yea. Up on my roof. Drop what you are doing tonight and climb upstairs and be seated baby. We've got the stars up above us and the city lights below, oh no. Up on the roof. Oh no.

So far away. Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door. And help to know, you're just time away. Long ago I reached for you and there you stood. Holding you again could only do me good. And how I wish I could. But you're so far away. One more song about moving along the highway. Can't say much of an If I could this life out my way. I'd rather spen being close to you. But you're so far away. Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fi see your face at my door. Thank I just want to say a few words. I used to stand on the street corner and sing Carole King songs and got to fall in love with rock and roll because of this woman. And just wanted to say that what she created was a true American art form and she encompasses and defines an era as much as Stephen Foster, George M. Cohen, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kearn, George Gershwin and Rogers and Hammerstein. And I want to thank you for creating all that stuff.

Carole wrote for so many people. This is an Everly Brothers hit that Billy and I are going to try to do for you now. One of my favorite Carole King tunes, "I'll Do My Crying In The Rain." Both: I'll never let you see the way my broken heart is hurting me. I've got my pride. And I know how to hide all my sorrow and pain. James
Taylor
I'll do my crying in the rain. Both: If I wait for cloudy skies. You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes. You'll never know that I still love you so. Though the heartaches remain. I'll do my crying in the rain. James Raindrops falling from heaven. They could ne wash away my memory. Billy
Joel
But since we're not together. I look for stormy weather. To hide the tears I hope you'll never see. Both: Someday when my crying's done. I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun. I may be a fool but 'till then darling you'll. Never see me complain. James

. George Gershwin, it was said was a, "Man who lives in music;" who "Expresses everything, serious or not, sound or superficial, by means of music, because it is his native language." And I can't think of a better description of tonight's
Gershwin Prize recipient
singer-songwriter Carole King. By the age of four, Carole was already mastering the piano. By 15, she'd already conducted her first orchestra. By 17, she'd already written her first number one hit, which you've already heard, "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" With Gerry Goffin. So at this point all of you are feeling like under achievers, I understand.
audience laughing
Gershwin Prize recipient
. And then in 1971 came the biggest break of all, when she showed the world that she couldn't just write hit songs, she could sing them too. Her album, "Tapestry," struck a chord with a whole new legion of fans, including me. To date, Carole has written more than 400 compositions that have been recorded by over 1,000 artists, resulting in over 100 hits. As Carole tells it, the secret to her success is that, "I try to get out of the way and let the process be guided by whatever is driving me." That's what makes her songs so personal and so powerful, so enduring. Like the Gershwin's, it's not just that Carole lives the music; it's that music lives in her. So tonight, it is my great pleasure to present America's highest award for popular music to a living legend, Carole King.

Now, when I was a child, we had a piano in our living room. And I had music teachers in the public schools and I had parents who encouraged me every step of the way. If only every child could have the support I had. There are so many people to thank for this evening. First I want to thank the Gershwin family, please.
