Tony Evers:
Given all the results we have seen tonight, I feel confident in saying to you right now, my name is Tony Evers and I’m going to be the next governor in the state of Wisconsin!
[audience cheers and claps]
Marisa Wojcik:
In the early morning hours of Wednesday November seventh, after the last arrant absentee ballots from the city of Milwaukee were accounted for and counted. The Associated Press called the election for Wisconsin’s next governor in favor of the Democratic candidate, Tony Evers. But Republicans weren’t giving up so quickly.
Rebecca Kleefisch:
I am here this morning to tell you that the fight is not over.
Marisa Wojcik:
After speculation of a possible recount spread throughout Wednesday morning, Scott Walker sent out a press release, and by Wednesday afternoon, had conceded the race to Tony Evers, saying, “I offered the full support of my staff and our cabinet as he begins the transition process.”
Tony Evers:
And I look forward to working with Speaker Vos, the Majority Leader Fitzgerald, in the days and months ahead to work for a better Wisconsin.
Marisa Wojcik:
Despite Democratic enthusiasm in the state-wide races for governor, U.S. senate, attorney general, and more, the Republicans will maintain control of the state senate and assembly. And Tony Evers will have to work with these Republican majorities if he wants to get things done.
Tony Evers:
And now that the race is behind us, I look forward to moving forward together.
[audience cheers]
