Now for an update away from the state capitol. The U.S. Army is backing out of its agreement to build an estimated $20 million public drinking water system in the town of Merrimac. The water system was supposed to protect private well owners from the nearby Badger Army Ammunition Plant leaking chemicals into the water supply. An Army spokesperson said providing a water system would be inconsistent with the Army’s authority under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program.
