>> This animal is only known from a couple of records here in the Francis Marion National Forest area. This is a northern pine snake, and the really dark pattern is a great way to blend in to this burned soil that forms the background of the landscape, and so the darker the pattern on top, the more it matches the consistently dark soil. It's got a wide range, from way up in places like New Jersey down through the coastal plain of North Carolina, South Carolina, and even a few up in the mountains of South Carolina. But by far, this is the darkest northern pine that I've seen, a really incredible animal that spends much of his time out here in the heat of the day! That's usually when you find these snakes looking for warm-blooded animals. A totally harmless colubrid and just perfectly suited to this habitat.
