"Blossom" playing
>> Blossom, smile some sunshine down my way Lately I've been lonesome Blossom, it's been much too long a day Seems my dreams have frozen Melt my cares away Oh, send the sunshine down my way Whenever you call my name I know what you mean to say to me Girl, it's all the same Blossom, there's an empty road behind Sit you down beside me Blossom, there's a sweet dream on my mind There's a song inside me Take these chains away Oh, send the sunshine down my way Whenever you call my name I know what you mean to say to me Girl, it's all the same I say, blossom, smile some sunshine down my way Lately, child, I've been lonesome, don't you know? Blossom, it's been much too long a day Seems my dreams have frozen Melt my cares away La, la, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la, la La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la la Blossom

>> We used to play that one back in the early '70s. And when I, you know, first learned that we were going to be doing this, I started to listen to it and tried to see if I could remember it. And my brain didn't, my fingers did, and my heart definitely did.
"So Far Away" playing
Cheers and applause
So far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door Doesn't help to know you're just time away Long ago I reached for you and there you stood Holding you again could only do me good How I wish I could But you're so far away One more song about moving along the highway Can't say much of anything that's new If I could only work this life out my way I'd rather spend it being close to you But you're so far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door Doesn't help to know you're so far away Yeah, oh so far away Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely Nothing else to do but close my mind I sure hope the road don't come to own me There's so many dreams I've yet to find I've yet to find Oh, but you're so far away Doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore? It would be so fine to see your face at my door Doesn't help to know you're so far away Yeah, oh so far away Hey You're so far away

Thank you, thank you. >> Thank you. Thanks for the lovely flowers. >> We're gonna put them in a vase.

>> It's like it was a shock for them to be ripped out of the median strip there.

We're fortunate -- we're all fortunate that these three guys who were the original band in 1970-whatever are here tonight. Please welcome still-living and at the top of their game, Danny Kortchmar, Lee Sklar -- Lee Sklar, Mr. Natural. Mr. Natural, the man behind the Shroud of Turin, folks. And Mr. Clean, Russell Kunkel. Rusty Kunkel.
Cheers and applause
We're trying to recreate as much as possible of when we played here in the early '70s, which we did repeatedly, evidently, and...
Laughter
You know, and this song was surely part of the set back in those days. [ "Carolina in My Mind" playing ]
Cheers and applause
>> In my mind, I'm going to Carolina Can't you see the sunshine? Can't you just feel the moonshine? Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Oh, I'm going to Carolina in my mind Karen, she's the silver sun You best walk her way and watch it shine Watch her watch the morning come A silver tear appearing now I'm crying, ain't I? And I'm going to Carolina in my mind There ain't no doubt in no one's mind That love's the finest thing around Whisper something soft and kind And, hey, baby -- the sky's on fire, I'm dying, ain't I? And I'm going to Carolina in my mind In my mind, I'm gone to Carolina Can't you see the sunshine? Can't you just feel the moonshine? Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Till I'm gone to Carolina in my mind Dark and silent late last night I think I might have heard the highway calling Geese in flight and dogs that bite And signs that might be omens say I'm going, I'm going I'm gone to Carolina in my mind It's a holy host of others standing around me Still I'm on the dark side of the moon And it looks like it goes on like this forever, oh You must forgive me If I'm going to Carolina in my mind In my mind I'm long-gone to Carolina Can't you see the sunshine? Can't you just feel the moonshine? Ain't it just like a friend of mine to hit me from behind? Till I'm gone to Carolina in my mind Oh, I'm going to Carolina in my mind I'm going 'Cause I'm going to Carolina in my mind

>> Stayed in bed all morning just to pass the time There's something wrong here, there can be no denying One of us is changing Or maybe we just stopped trying >> And it's too late, baby, now it's too late Though we really did try to make it Something inside has died And I can't hide and I just can't fake it >> Oh, no, no, no It used to be so easy living here with you You were light and breezy and I knew just what to do Now you look so unhappy and I feel just like a fool >> But it's too late, baby, now it's too late Though we really did try to make it Something inside has died And I can't hide and I just can't fake it >> Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no

>> This is a tune that I wrote in 1967, and it's the song that got me a record deal with Apple Records. I played it for Peter Asher, who's right up there.
Indistinct
Played it for Peter Asher, and he played it for Paul McCartney and George Harrison, who signed me to Apple Records -- first person signed who was a -- So, it was my big break. It was a huge moment for me. It was as if somebody had opened a door and the rest of my life were on the other side of it. Which happens often, actually, but usually in a negative way.
Laughter
Opens a door, and it's hell on the other side. Yeah. Anyway, this is a song that got me signed. [ "Something in the Way She Moves" playing ]
Applause
Well, there's something in the way she moves or looks my way or calls my name That seems to leave this troubled world behind And if I'm feeling down and blue or troubled by some foolish game She always seems to make me change my mind I feel fine anytime she's around me now She's around me now almost all the time If I'm well you can tell she's been with me now She's been with me now quite a long, long time and I feel fine Every now and then the things I'd lean on lose their meaning And I find myself careening In places where I should not let me go She has the power to go where no one else can find me And to silently remind me Of the happiness and the good times that I know, know Well, I guess I just got to know that it isn't what she's got to say Or how she thinks and where she's been To me, the words are nice the way they sound I like to hear them best that way It doesn't much matter what they mean She says them mostly just to calm me down I feel fine anytime she's around me now She's around me now I guess just about all the time If I'm well, you can tell that she's been with me now She's been with me now Quite a long, quite long, long time Yes, and I feel fine

>> This next song was actually sort of my beginning. I started writing with and was married to at the time Gerry Goffin.
Cheering
Please.
Applause
He wrote so many of the lyrics to so many of your favorite songs. I guess the ones that he and I didn't write, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote. But anyway, this was written at a time when we had a young child and I think another one on the way, and we were kind of struggling along. Gerry had a day job as a chemist and...
Laughs
Which led to other things.
Laughter
But we were writing, and we got this song recorded by the Shirelles, and don't you know this was the one that allowed him to quit his day job, which I'm still not sure was a good thing.
Laughter
But at any rate, this was our first hit, and we hope you enjoy it. [ "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" playing ]
Applause
Tonight you're mine completely You give your love so sweetly Tonight the light of love is in your eyes >> But will you love me tomorrow? >> Is this a lasting treasure Or just a moment's pleasure? Can I believe the magic of your sighs? >> Will you still love me tomorrow? Tonight with words unspoken You said that I'm the only one But will my heart be broken >> When the night >> When the night >> Meets the morning sun? >> Meets the morning sun?
Cheers and applause
>> I'd like to know that your love Is love I can be sure of So tell me now and I won't ask again >> Will you still love me tomorrow? Will you still love me >> Tomorrow? Baby, will you still love me tomorrow? >> Will you still love me tomorrow?
Cheers and applause
>> I love when you sing that.
"Country Road" playing
>> Take to the highway Won't you lend me your name? Your way and my way Seem to be one and the same Mama don't understand it She wants to know where I've been I'd have to be some kind of natural born fool To walk on the road again But you know I could feel it Walkin' on a country road Sail on home to Jesus Won't you, good girls and boys? I'm all in pieces You can have your own choice 'Cause I see a heavenly band full of angels And they're comin' to set me free I don't know nothin' about the why or when But I can tell that it's bound to be Just because I could feel it Walkin' on a country road I reckon my feet know where they want me to go Walkin' on a country road Walkin' on a country road Take to the highway Won't you lend me your name? Your way and my way They seem to be one and the same thing tonight Mama don't understand it She wants to know where the boy's been I'd have to be some kind of natural born fool To walk out on the road again But I could feel it, feel it, feel it, feel it, feel it Walkin' on a dirt road Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down Walk on down a country road

>> It's you, babe. >> Okay, honey. Thanks a lot. Well, folks, I want to talk a little bit about Rusty Kunkel.
Cheers and applause
Russell Kunkel is a renowned and legendary drummer, a man with that rare ability to hit things and make music. People aren't using brushes in rock 'n' roll songs the way he did on this song, and it really increased the song in the studio when Peter and I first recorded it.
"Fire and Rain" playing
Cheers and applause
Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song I just can't remember who to send it to I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you again Won't you look down upon me, Jesus? You've got to help me to make a stand Just got to see me through another day My body's aching and my time is at hand And I won't make it any other way Oh, I have seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days, I thought they'd never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you again So, I'm walking my mind to an easy time, my back turned towards the sun Lord knows the cold wind blows, it'll turn your head around Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain I've seen sunny days, I thought they'd never end I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend But I always thought that I'd see you somehow one more time again, now Thought I'd see you one more time again There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you, fire and rain Thought I'd see you just one more time, Suzanne

The tune of it, I wrote it behind the wheel of an automobile, and the first verse was written driving down to North Carolina. I was going down to see my -- I'd been abroad for a year. Well, I'd been overseas.

Indistinct
Been over in London for a year, and I came home, and I wanted to see my family 'cause I wanted to catch up. You know, when you stay away from your family, you forget what they're really like and you go visit them. So anyway, my brother Alex and his wife, Brent, had had a kid in the time that'd been away. Just take your eye off them for a second...they divide. Anyway, my brother Alex had named this child in a moment of weakness. He named it after me -- little baby James. And I was driving down to see this kid, this little varmint, for the first time. It's touching, yeah. If you like children.
Laughter
So, I was driving down to see little baby James, and I was trying to figure out what kind of song would be a good song to sing to him.
Laughter
And it had to be a cowboy lullaby, you know? "Go to sleep, you little buckaroo."
Laughter
"Lights out in the bunkhouse." That kind of thing.
Chuckles
Like that. And that's how this song got writ.
"Sweet Baby James" playing
Cheers and applause
There is a young cowboy and he lives on the range His horse and his cattle, they're his only companions He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons Just waiting for summer, his pastures to change Yes, and as the moon rises he sits by his fire Just a-thinking about women and glasses of beer And closing his eyes as the dogies retire He sings out a song which is soft but it's clear Just as if maybe someone could hear He says, "Goodnight, you moonlight ladies Rockabye, sweet baby James Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose Won't you let me go down in my dreams? Yes, and rockabye, my sweet baby James" Now the first of December, it was covered with snow Yes, so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston Now, the Berkshires seemed dreamlike On account of that frosting With 10 miles behind me and 10,000 more to go, whoa There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway A song that they sing when they take to the sea A song that they sing of their home in the sky Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep Just that singing seemed to work fine for me So, goodnight, all you moonlight ladies Rockabye, sweet baby James Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose Won't you let me go down in my dreams? Oh, rockabye, ol' sweet baby James

[ "I Feel the Earth Move" playing ] >> I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down I feel my heart start to trembling Whenever you're around Oh, baby, when I see your face Mellow as the month of May Oh, darling, I can't stand it When you look at me that way >> I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down I feel my heart start to trembling Whenever you're around Yeah Oh, darling, when you're near me And you tenderly call my name I know that my emotions Are something that I just can't tame I've just got to have you, baby Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah Yeah I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down, a-tumbling down I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down, tumbling down I just lose control Down to my very soul I get hot and cold all over All over, all over, yeah I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down Tumbling down I feel the earth move under my feet I feel the sky tumbling down Tumbling down Tumbling down A-tumbling down Tumbling down A-tumbling down Oh

>> This is a Carole King tune, a pure Carole King tune. I heard it for the first time standing right there where that green and red Christmas-y light is there. I used to stand out here. I can't remember anything from one year either side of hearing this song, but I remember standing there and hearing Carole play this song. It was -- I worked it up on the guitar and got a version of it, and in an amazing act of generosity, just plain nothing but generosity and kindness, she let me cut this tune first and release it first. I was amazed because she was cutting "Tapestry" at the time.
Cheers and applause
And that she should let go of what I thought was maybe the best pop tune ever written. You know, I was just amazed. I didn't realize it at the time that I'd be singing that song every single night for the rest of my life.
Laughter
But it's a great song to be known for, and I've traveled around the world on this tune, so it's great. So I thank Carole for it, often when she's not around. I will thank her right now for it.

[ "You've Got a Friend" playing ] When you're down and troubled And you need some loving care And nothing, oh, nothing is going right Just close your eyes and think of me And soon I will be there To brighten up even your darkest night >> You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come running to see you again It's winter, spring, summer or fall >> All you have to do is call And I'll be there, yeah, yes, I'll be there You've got a friend >> If the sky above you Should turn dark and full of clouds And that old north wind should begin to blow Keep your head together And call my name out loud Soon you'll hear me knocking upon your door Your door, your door >> You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come running to see you again >> Winter, spring, summer or fall >> All you've got to do is call And I'll be there Yes, I will Hey, now Now ain't it good to know that you've got a friend When people can be so cold? >> They'll hurt you, yes, and desert you Well, they'll take your soul if you let them >> Oh, now, but don't you let them You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I'll come running just as fast as I can to see you again >> See you again and again >> Don't you know, my friend? >> Winter, spring, summer or fall >> All you have to do is call on me And I'll be there, yeah, yes, I will be there You've got a friend You've got yourself a friend Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend? Walking and talking tonight >> Here we are at the Troubadour We never thought we would do this anymore But this was the place that opened the door for this Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, James.
Cheers and applause
Ain't it good to know? >> Good to know >> Ain't it good to know? >> Good to know >> Ain't it good to know? Ain't it good to know? Ain't it good to know? Yeah, yeah, yeah You've got a friend
Cheers and applause
[ "You Can Close Your Eyes" playing ] >> Well, the sun is surely sinkin' down But the moon is slowly risin' So this old world must still be spinnin' around And I still love you So close your eyes You can close your eyes, it's alright I don't know no love songs And I can't sing the blues anymore But I can sing this song And you can sing this song When I'm gone It won't be long before another day We gonna have a good time And no one's gonna take that time away You can stay as long as you like Only close your eyes You can close your eyes, it's alright 'Cause I don't know no love songs And I can't sing the blues anymore Oh, but I can sing this song And you can sing this song when I'm gone
Cheers and applause
