(AUDIENCE CHEERING) All right.
Good evening.
Yes!
(CHEERING CONTINUES) Thanks.
(LAUGHS) The crowd.
Thank you.
Thank you all.
This is live TV.
This is the way this television, the way it was meant to be.
Anything goes, anything goes.
And anything can happen.
So, let's take our next, uh, phone.
Our caller, Monica.
Monica, are you there?
– MONICA: Yes, I am.
-Hi, Monica.
-Hi.
How are you?
-Okay.
It says that you're from San Antonio, Texas.
-That is correct.
– WOMAN: Whoo!
San Antonio, Texas, from here, too.
Great.
Well, what can I do for you?
Well, let me first tell you how much your music has touched my life.
Aw, thanks.
You have been a musical inspiration, I think, to everybody.
-Thanks.
-(AUDIENCE CHEERING) The song that I'd like to hear is a song that was played in my wedding, a month before my dad died of terminal cancer.
The song that we danced to.
And it is I am Your Child.
I Am Your Child.
And that means so much to me as I know it means to you.
Aw, thanks.
Yes, it does mean a lot to me.
It was the first... When I think about I Am Your Child, it was the first... I guess it was the first professional song I ever wrote.
I wrote songs before that, but my dear friend, Marty Panzer, and I, uh, were hired to write, uh, a theme song for a movie.
And the movie opened and closed, and it didn't really make it.
But I just loved... I loved this song.
I do.
I just love this song and I do it whenever I can.
Um, I did it on that, uh... That silly Murphy Brown show.
-(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) -(CHUCKLES) I had a good time.
I had a good time doing that there.
Really, it gave this song new life.
I've sung it at, uh... At various, uh, benefits and... And very, uh, appropriate moments.
I guess the most... I guess the most appropriate moment for me on this song was, uh... My mom died about a year-and-a-half ago, and I was on tour.
And, uh, so when I came back from the funeral, I knew that the whole audience knew that, you know, that had just happened, that I had just gone through it, and I just couldn't see myself coming out and just singing some great up-tempo song, you know?
So I opened the whole show with this song.
And, uh, it was kind of a tribute to my... To my mom.
She was a very musical, very musical woman, very musical woman.
And I guess she gave me my music.
She gave me... my love for music and the talent.
And, uh... And on her deathbed, I went to, uh... To visit her, and I brought my new album, and I played it for her.
I played it.
She was laying there and I played... And the... And the Angels Sing came on, you know?
And I... And I saw her do... (AUDIENCE LAUGHING) I'll never forget it.
I am your child (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Wherever you go You take me too Whatever I know I learned from you Whatever I do You taught me to do I am your child And I am your chance Whatever will come Will come from me Tomorrow is won By winning me Whatever I am You taught me to be I am your hope I am your chance I am your child Whatever I am You taught me to be I am your hope I am your chance I am your child (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) All right.
Well, let's take another phone call here.
We have a caller on the line.
(SCATTERED LAUGHTER) -Do we have a caller on the line?
– WOMAN: (ON PHONE) Hello.
-"Hello."
Hi, Vivian.
– VIVIAN: Hi.
Hi, Barry.
Okay, it's Vivian from Chicago, one of my favorite towns.
-Hi.
Hi, Vivian.
– VIVIAN: Hi.
How are you?
Okay, what can I do for you?
VIVIAN: Um, I asked to hear Daybreak.
-What's that?
Daybreak?
– VIVIAN: Daybreak.
-Daybreak.
-(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Daybreak.
I like... I... Why am I sitting down?
I like... I don't play it on this one.
I like... (CHUCKLES) I like singing Daybreak.
And you know... You know how we wrote Daybreak?
Adrienne and I wrote Daybreak when we were the most miserable (LAUGHS) of the year.
Back in the '70s, Adrienne Anderson, my wonderful lyricist partner, um, moved to California, moved out of New York to California.
And, um, she wound up all by herself, missing everybody in New York.
And then I was in New York being hounded by... I was just starting my celebrity, and being hounded by photographers and stuff.
And we were both miserable, and we both met in California and sat on a mountaintop in Mill Valley and just looked out and just... -We were just miserable, so we wrote Daybreak.
-(ALL LAUGH) I guess we just wrote it to cheer ourselves up.
-Hit it, Steve.
-(INTRO PLAYING) That's what you do now and again, you know?
You write.
You write to cheer yourself up.
So come on.
Cheers me up.
Hey, that's good.
I'm singing to the world It's time to let the spirit come in Let it come on in I'm singing to the world Everybody's caught in a spin Look at where we've been We've been running around year after year Blinded with pride Blinded with fear But it's daybreak if you wanna believe It can be daybreak ain't no time to grieve Said it's daybreak If you'll only believe and let it shine, shine, shine - All around the world - Sing it, sing it, sing it - Whoo - Sing it to the world Sing it, sing it I'm singing to the world What's the point of putting it down?
There's so much love to share I'm singing to the world Don't you see it all comes around?
The feeling's everywhere We've been closing our eyes day after day Covered in clouds Losing our way Hey, but it's daybreak If you wanna believe It can be daybreak ain't no time to grieve Said it's daybreak If you'll only believe and let it shine, shine, shine - All around the world - Let's sing it Sing it to the world - Whoo - Everyone sing it Sing it to the world Yes, and it's daybreak if you wanna believe It can be daybreak ain't no time to grieve Said it's daybreak If you'll only believe and let it shine, shine, shine All around the world Let's sing it Sing it to the world Let it shine, shine, shine all around the world Sing it to the world Sing it, sing it Sing it to the world Sing it, sing it Said it's day-ay-aybreak Can you feel it?
It's day-ay-aybreak Can you... Come on, somebody yell, "One more time!"
– AUDIENCE: One more time!
-Thank you.
One more time!
Sing it to the world Said it's daybreak if you wanna believe It can be day (AUDIENCE CHEERS) Said it's daybreak if you'll only believe And let it shine, shine - All around the world - Let's sing it Sing it to the world Come on And let it shine, shine, shine - All around the world - Sing it to the world Sing it, sing it Sing it to the world Sing it, sing it - Around the world - Sing it to the world Sing it Sing it to the world (AUDIENCE CHEERING) (AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Welcome back.
Thanks.
Welcome back.
Let's take our next... Let's take our next request.
It says there, "Debbie from Ottawa, Canada."
Debbie, are you online?
– DEBBIE: Hi, Barry.
-Hi, Debbie.
DEBBIE: It's so nice to talk to you.
Yeah.
Canada.
We're reaching Canada too.
-I forgot all about that.
– DEBBIE: Yes.
And I have to tell you, what I've heard of your new CD, it's just wonderful, but it's not available up here.
Really?
DEBBIE: I've been told not until February, and it was on my Christmas list.
Until February?
Ah, bet you it'll get up there earlier than that.
-Oh, I hope so.
-Okay.
We'll send you one or something.
-Oh, that would be great.
-Somebody will send you one.
Thanks.
Well, so, what can I... Maybe I can sing something for you now.
I'd love to hear Somewhere In the Night.
-Somewhere In the Night.
-Somewhere In the Night.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDS) DEBBIE: And, Barry, I'd just like to put a plug in for our local morning radio talk-show hosts, Jeff and Joanne, who are now playing Barry Manilow songs in the morning.
-Well, they're finally catching up.
-That's right.
It's great.
Well, that's great.
I love singing Somewhere In the Night.
I do.
I love singing Somewhere In the Night, except that last note.
(LAUGHTER) Oh, God.
I... As this last note hits, I, like... I clutch.
My hands get wet, my palms sweat, I wet my pants.
-I mean, I... -(LAUGHTER) So if I hit this last note, you have to, like, stand and cheer, okay?
All right, let's do it.
Hit it.
Time You found time enough to love And I found love enough to hold you So tonight, I'll stir the fire you feel inside Until the flames of love enfold you Laying beside you Lost in the feeling So glad you opened my door Come with me Somewhere in the night we will know (VOCALIZING) Everything lovers can know You're my song Music too magic to end I'll play you over and over again Over and over again Loving so warm Moving so right Closing our eyes And feeling the light We'll just go on burning bright Somewhere in the night You'll sleep When the morning comes And I'll lie and watch you sleeping And you'll smile when you dream about the night Like it's a secret you've been keeping Laying beside you Lost in the feeling So glad you opened my door You're my song Music too magic to end - I'll play you over and over again - Over and over again Loving so warm Moving so right Closing our eyes And feeling the light We'll just go on burning bright Somewhere in the night We'll just go on burning bright Somewhere in the night (SUSTAINING NOTE) Somewhere in the Night Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
(CHUCKLES) Thanks.
I... I felt your energy.
(CHUCKLES) That was fun, that last thing, wasn't it?
All right.
Jeanette from Phoenix, Arizona.
Hi, Jeanette, are you on the line?
– JEANETTE: Yes, I am, Barry.
Hi.
-Hi.
-How you doing?
-Oh, fine, thank you.
How is it in Phoenix?
-Pardon me?
-How is it in Phoenix?
Absolutely beautiful.
-Oh, it must be beautiful this time of year, right?
-Yes, it is.
It's actually pretty nice here in New York too.
So, what can... So, what can we do for you?
Can I sing a song for you?
JEANETTE: Yes, you sure can, Barry.
-I would love to hear Mandy.
-Ooh, Mandy.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) I was kind of waiting for that one, huh?
JEANETTE: I guess your whole audience wants it, too.
I was kind of waiting for that one.
Yeah, that one.
Mandy.
Mandy.
Every time I sing it these days, as the years go by, Mandy becomes the song, becomes more important, more profound for me.
It brings back such memories.
It's become more than just a song for me.
It's become a very, very profound memory.
(PLAYING INTRO ON PIANO) I remember all my life Raining down as cold as ice Shadows of a man A face through a window Crying in the night The night goes into morning Just another day Happy people pass my way Looking in their eyes I see a memory I never realized How happy you made me Oh, Mandy Well, you came and you gave without taking But I sent you away Oh, Mandy You kissed me and stopped me from shaking And I need you today Oh, Mandy I'm standing on the edge of time I've walked away when love was mine Caught up in a world of uphill climbing The tears are in my mind And nothing is rhyming Oh, Mandy Well, you came and you gave without taking But I sent you away Oh, Mandy You kissed me and stopped me from shaking And I need you today Oh, Mandy Yesterday's a dream Now I face the morning Crying on a breeze The pain is calling Oh, Mandy Well, you came and you gave without taking But I sent you away Oh, Mandy You kissed me and stopped me from shaking And I need you today Oh, Mandy You came and you gave without taking But I sent you away Oh, Mandy You kissed me and stopped me From shaking And I need You (SUSTAINING NOTE) (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Thanks.
All right, let's, uh... Let's, uh... Let's see what's... Let's see what's going on on the phones.
Uh, Rhonda.
Rhonda from Amarillo, Texas.
-Hi, Rhonda.
– RHONDA: Hi, Barry.
Hi.
Uh, can I, uh, sing something for you, Rhonda?
RHONDA: Yes, sir.
Would you do When October Goes?
Ooh, yeah.
(APPLAUSE) Ooh!
Oh, boy, you are just... You just... You guys are just asking for my favorite... My favorite songs.
I think I need a... I need to sit on the stool on this one.
When October Goes.
Oh, what can I tell you about When October Goes?
Number one, it comes from my favorite album, uh, 2:00 AM Paradise Cafe.
(APPLAUSE) Thanks.
And, uh, the lyric was written by the great late Johnny Mercer.
I was lucky enough to get his, uh... His widow gave me a stack of his lyrics that no one had ever put music to.
And I put music to all of his, uh... All of that stack of lyrics.
And this was the first one that I put music to, this song called When October Goes.
It was a beautiful poem that he had written, and I just sat it on the piano and I just played it.
It was like he was writing it with me.
Let me sing it for you.
I was nuts about it.
Okay, Ron.
(INTRO PLAYING) And when October goes The snow begins to fly Above the smokey roofs I watch the planes go by The children running home Beneath a twilight sky Oh, for the fun of them When I was one of them And when October goes The same old dream appears And you are in my arms To share the happy years I turn my head away To hide the helpless tears Oh, how I hate to see October go Oh, for the fun of them When I was one of them And when October goes The same old dream appears And you are in my arms To share the happy years I turn my head away To hide the helpless tears Oh, how I hate to see October go I should be over it now I know It doesn't matter much How old I grow I hate to see October Go (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Thanks.
Mm.
Thank you.
Thank you for requesting that one.
All right, let's go back to the phones and see.
Now here's, uh, Jeannie from Downey, California.
Jeannie, are you on the line?
– JEANNIE: Yes, I sure am.
-Hi.
– JEANNIE: Hi.
How are you?
-All right.
-What you got... -JEANNIE: (INDISTINCT) ...is sensational.
-What's that?
-The new CD is sensational.
Oh, thanks.
Oh, I'm so glad you guys like the new CD.
Thanks.
What can I do for you?
-Uh, Could It Be Magic.
-Could It Be Magic.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Mm.
That's another one of my favorites.
Some interviewer asked me about what my favorite songs are.
And that one, definitely.
That's definitely the, uh... The primo, uh... My primo favorite.
I wrote it, uh, back in the '70s, of course, and uh, I based it on a Chopin prelude.
Uh, the beautiful Chopin prelude in C minor, it, uh... You know, the one that goes... (PLAYING PIANO) Boy, he knew how to write those chords, didn't he?
Chopin is my favorite composer.
Next to Babyface.
-(CLEARS THROAT) -(SCATTERED LAUGHTER) (CHUCKLES) So, um... So let me play you a little piece of the prelude, and, um, then I'll play you, uh, Could It Be Magic.
(PLAYING PRELUDE ON PIANO) Spirit move me Every time I'm near you Whirling like a cyclone in my mind Sweet Melissa Angel of my lifetime Answer to all answers I can find Baby, I love you, come Come, come into my arms Let me know the wonder of all of you And baby, I want you now Now, now, and hold on fast Could this be the magic at last?

Heather from Detroit, Michigan.
Are you on the line?
– HEATHER: Hi, Barry.
-Hi, Heather.
I just wanted to tell you I grew up listening to your music.
-Yeah?
-My mother and I are really big fans of yours.
-Thanks.
-And can you please play Copacabana?
-Copacabana?
-(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Well, I was waiting.
I was wondering when we were going to... To Copacabana.
Copacabana, really.
You know, who knew, who would have known that Copacabana would wind up to be such, such an incredibly popular song, you know?
We wrote it on the, uh... On that, uh... On one of my earlier albums as a novelty cut.
Who knew that it was going to be such, uh, an internationally big hit.
It's been, you know, a hit song.
It's been a movie, a casino show.
It's been a... It's been a breath mint.
-(AUDIENCE LAUGHS) -It's been a floor wax, a suppository.
-And now... -(LAUGHTER) And now, it's a full-fledged show in England.
So who knew?
Okay, guys, let's give it a try.
Let's give it a try.
(PLAYING INTRO) BARRY: Yeah.
(AUDIENCE CLAPS IN RHYTHM) Her name was Lola Her name was Lola Her name was Lola She was a showgirl With yellow feathers in her hair And a dress cut down to there She would merengue and do the cha-cha And while she tried to be a star Tony always tended bar across the crowded floor They worked from 8:00 'til 4:00 They were young and they had each other Who could ask for more?
- At the Copa - Copa - Copacabana - Copacabana The hottest spot north of Havana - Here at the Copa - Copa - Copacabana - Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the Copa They fell in love Copa Copacabana His name was Rico He wore a diamond He was escorted to his chair He saw Lola dancing there And when she finished he called her over But Rico went a bit too far Tony sailed across the bar And then the punches flew And chairs were smashed in two There was blood and a single gunshot But just who shot who?
- At the Copa - Copa - Copacabana - Copacabana The hottest spot north of Havana - Here at the Copa - Copa - Copacabana - Copacabana Music and passion were always the fashion At the Copa - She lost her love - Copa - She lost her love - Copacabana BARRY: Play it, Kenny!
Copa Copacabana Copacabana Music and passion Were always the fashion Bobby.
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) Yeah!
Her name is Lola She was a showgirl But that was 30 years ago when they used to have a show Now it's a disco but not for Lola Still in the dress she used to wear Faded feathers in her hair She sits there so refined and drinks herself half-blind She lost her youth she lost her Tony Now she's lost her mind - At the Copa - Copa - Copacabana - Copacabana Come on.
Sing it.
The hottest spot north of Havana - Here at the Copa - Copa - Copacabana - Copacabana Music and passion were always in fashion At the Copa don't fall in love Copa - Don't fall in love - Copacabana BARRY: No, no, no, no.
Yes.
Don't fall in love Ole!
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) All right.
I like it.
Ken Berry on the guitar, yeah.
(AUDIENCE APPLAUDING) Thank you.
Thank you, everybody.
All right, our next caller, Joan from Albany.
-Hiya, Joan.
– JOAN: Hi, Barry.
-Hi.
-I'm enjoying your show tonight, and I think it's a wonderful thing you're doing for all your fans.
Oh, thanks.
Thanks to A&E for letting us do it.
And I have to tell you, I have every 29 of your albums that you have.
-Oh, my, my, my.
-Including your new one.
And to pick a song from one of them is very hard.
But my favorite album is your Christmas album.
Oh, my Christmas album.
Really?
Yes, I play it in July.
(ALL LAUGHING) Oh, it's one of my favorite albums, too.
Really, I'm so proud of my Christmas album.
You ask, what's a nice Jewish boy like me making a Christmas album, right?
I love the time of the year.
I do.
I love the season, I love the giving, I love the whole part of it.
And so what can we do from our Christmas album?
Debra, are you into it?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING) -JOAN: Well, just... -BARRY: Why don't you start that little vamp there?
We'll do one of my favorite songs from the Christmas album.
It was written by... (BABY, IT'S COLD OUTSIDE INTRO PLAYING) BARRY: Mm.
It was written by Johnny, uh... Johnny Mercer again.
Great lyrics by Johnny Mercer.
And I like it because it kind of sets up a scene.
And the scene is, um, two people on a cold, wintry night, snowing outside.
They're in front of a fireplace.
They're settling down for a long night together.
Well, honey bun, it's been fun, but I gotta run.
BARRY: Why?
Oh, but darling, come on.
You gotta stay just a little while longer, please.
You gotta stay a little while longer.
You can't go out there in the cold.
It's snowing, it's freezing.
You'll catch your death of cold.
I would never forgive myself.
-Well, I should.
-Oh, please think of the Jewish guilt that I would have if you did this.
Come sit down.
Sit down, darling.
Stay just a little while longer.
-Please don't make me beg.
-Oh, I love it when you beg.
BARRY: Oh, come on.
- I really can't stay - Baby, it's cold outside I've got to go away But baby, it's cold outside This evening has been I'm so lucky that you dropped in So very nice I'll hold your hands They're just like ice My mother will start to worry Beautiful, what's your hurry?
And father will be pacing the floor Listen to the fireplace roar So, really I'd better scurry Oh, beautiful Please don't scurry Well, maybe just a half a drink more Put some CDs on while I pour The neighbors might think But baby, it's bad out there Oh, say what was that drink?
No cabs to be had out there I wish I knew how Your eyes are like starlight now To break this spell - You sure look fine - Oh, yeah?
Your hair looks glam I ought to say no No, no, no, no Mind if I move in closer?
At least I'm gonna say that I tried What's the sense of hurting my pride?
I really can't stay Baby, don't hold on BOTH: Ah, but it's cold outside Well, sweet pea, you really are a swell guy, but I've got to go.
-(MOUTHING) -Oh, please, puddin' pop, don't, don't, don't go away.
Don't go so soon.
Come on, darling.
It's really cold out.
You're gonna catch your death of cold, and what would I do then?
-Oh.
-Please stay just a little while longer.
Oh, I simply must go Baby, it's cold outside Oh, the answer is no But baby, it's cold outside The welcome has been So lucky that you dropped in So nice and warm Look out the window At that storm My sister will be suspicious Gosh, your lips look good And mother will be there at the door Like waves upon a tropical shore My maiden aunt's mind is vicious Gosh, your lips are delicious Well, maybe just a cigarette more Never such a blizzard before I've got to go home Baby, you'll freeze out there Say, lend me your comb It's up to your knees out there You've simply been grand I thrill when you touch my hand But don't you see How can you do this thing to me?
There's bound to be talk tomorrow Think of my life-long sorrow At least there will be plenty implied If you caught pneumonia and died - No, I really can't stay - Get over that hold out BOTH: Ah, but it's cold Outside Yes!
Let's go!
Oh!
-(AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) -Whoo!
Debra Byrd!
Okay, let's, uh... Are you having a good time, too?
(AUDIENCE CHEERING, APPLAUDING) All right, let's, uh... Let's take, uh... Let's take another caller, another request.
This is Bobby from Long Island, New York.
Long Island, Long Island.
Bobby, you there?
– BOBBY: I sure am.
How you doing?
-All right.
How you doing?
-Not bad.
-Good.
You got a... You got a request?
Yeah, could you play me, um, Even Now for my beautiful wife, Camille?
Even Now.
Hm.
Even Now.
Oh, these songs.
Thanks, Bobby.
These songs bring back such memories.
Such memories.
Marty Panzer's exquisite lyric.
Exquisite lyric on this one.
All right.
(PLAYING INTRO) Even now When there's someone else who cares When there's someone who's waiting home for me Even now I think about you As I'm climbing up the stairs And I wonder what to do So she won't see That even now When I know it wasn't right And I found a better life than what we had Even now I wake up cryin' In the middle of the night And I can't believe it still could hurt so bad Even now when I have come so far I wonder where you are I wonder why it's still so hard without you Even now when I come shinin' through I swear I think of you And how I wish you knew Even now Even now When I never hear your name And the world has changed so much since you've been gone Even now I still remember And the feeling's still the same And this pain inside of me goes on and on Even now Even now When I have come so far I wonder where you are I wonder why it's still so hard without you Even now when I come shinin' through I swear I think of you And God, I wish you knew Somehow Even now Even now (AUDIENCE CHEERING) Thank you all.
Thank you all so much.
