(crowd cheering) So I just got off of touring with the Stevie Wonder.
And every night I would sing this song, because a lot of people don't know that he wrote this song for Aretha Franklin.
You'll know it if you don't already know by the introduction.
Though you don't call me anymore I sit and wait in vain I guess I'll rap on your door Tap on your window pane Tap on your window pane, yeah Gonna tell you baby Changes I've been going through Listen to you, listen to you 'Til you come back to me, that's what I'm gonna do Hey!
Why did you have to decide You had to set me free I guess I'll swallow my pride Beg you to please, baby Baby, please see me Baby, won't you see me I'm gonna walk by myself Just to prove that my love is true Oh, for you, baby 'Til you come back to me That's what I'm gonna do Living for you, my dear Is living in a world of constant fear Hear my plea I've got to make you see That our love is dying Our love is dying Although your phone you ignore Somehow I must Somehow I must explain I guess I'll rap on your door Your door Tap on your window pane I'm gonna camp by your steps Until I get through to you, I'm gonna try To change your view, babe 'Til you come back to me, that's what I'm gonna do Yeah, yeah 'Til you come back to me, that's what I'm gonna do 'Til you come back to me that's what I'm gonna do (vocalizing) (vocalizing) (crowd cheering and applauding) Skylark Have you anything to say to me Won't you tell me where my love can be Is there a meadow in the mist Where someone's waiting to be kissed Skylark Have you seen a valley green with spring Where my heart can go a journey Over the shadows and the rain To a blossom summer rain And in your lonely flight Oh, haven't you heard Music in the night Wonderful music Think as the will of the wisp Crazy as a loon Sad as a gypsy Serenading the Moon Ooh Yeah, love Oh, I don't know if you can find these things Oh, but my heart My heart is riding on your wings So if you see them anywhere Won't you leave me There Ooh, ooh, ooh (crowd cheering and applauding) Thank you!
Thank you so much.
So I should in- not in any world be kicking Wayne Lindsey off the piano, but- (chuckles) but Aretha did play a little piano and I play just a fraction of what she played, but she said, don't play this song no more, so, you know.
(crowd laughing) Don't play that song for me 'Cause it brings back a memory Of days that I once knew Good days that I spent with you Oh, no, don't let them play Oh, no It fills my heart with pain Please stop it right away 'Cause I remember just what he said He said, darling You know that you lied Darling You know that you lied Darling You know that you lied Lied, lied Hey mister, don't play it no more Don't play it no more I can't stand it, don't play it no more No more, no more I can't stand it I remember on our first date He kissed me and he walked away I was only seventeen I never dreamed he'd be so mean He told me, darling, I love you Baby, baby, you lied Darling, I need you You know that you lied Darling, I love you You know that you lied Lied, lied, yeah (vocalizing) Darling, I love you Darling, I need you Darling, I love you You lied, you lied Oh, you lied Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, don't play it no more Don't play it no more I can't stand it, don't play it no more No more (vocalizing) Darling, I love you Darling, I need you Darling, I love you You lied, you lied (vocalizing) Don't play it no more (vocalizing) Don't play it no more (vocalizing) Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah (crowd cheering and applauding) She said don't play it no more!
(crowd cheering and applauding) So I just remembered that the last time I actually was on this side of the stage was 2017.
I was doing a show with David Foster, who is also a wonderful friend to PBS.
(crowd cheering and applauding) But it's kind of cool that I'm headlining my own show now, though, right?
(crowd laughing and applauding) But you know, a lot has changed since 2017.
You know, I got married... (crowd cheering and applauding) to a doctor... (crowd laughing and applauding) And his name is Phil.
(crowd laughing) You know, doctor feel good.
(crowd laughing) (crowd cheering and applauding) I don't want nobody Always Sittin' 'round me And my man I said I don't want nobody Always, sittin' right there Lookin' at me and that man Be it my mother, my brother or my sister Would you believe I'd get up Put on some clothes and go out And help them find somebody if I can Oh, yes I will No, I don't mind company Because company is all right with me Every once in a while Yes it is I tell you I I don't mind company Because company is all right with me Every once in a while Yeah But oh When me and that man get to loving I tell you girls I dig you But I just don't times to chit and sit And chit, and sit, and chit-chat, and smile Don't send me no doctor Filling me up with all them pills You see, I got me a man named Dr. Feelgood And oh, oh, he takes care of my pain tonight You see his His name is Dr. Feelgood in the morning And taking care of business Hey Is really this man's game And after one visit to Dr. Feelgood You'll understand why Feelgood is his name Hey, hey, hey, wow Thank good God Almighty The man makes me feel real good So good Yeah, yeah, yeah Oh yeah!
(crowd cheering and applauding) And I mean that thing.
(crowd cheering and applauding) Where are you, Dr. Feelgood?
I see you over there.
(laughs) There he is.
I love you, baby.
(crowd cheering and applauding) All right, start me off, Paul.
That's Paul Jackson Jr. right there, y'all.
(crowd cheering and applauding) And just so you know, y'all can dance, too, if you want to.
Especially on this one.
Chain, chain, chain Chain, chain, chain There you go.
Chain, chain Chain Chain of fools For five long years I thought you were my man But I found out, yeah, yeah I'm just a link in your chain You got me where you want me I ain't nothing but your fool You're treating me mean, yeah, yeah Oh, you're treating me cruel Yeah, yeah, yeah Chain, chain, chain Chain of fools Now every chain Has got a weak link I might be weak, yeah Oh, but I'll give you the strength Yeah, yeah, yeah Uh, uh You told me to leave you alone My father said, come on home My doctor said, take it easy Oh, but your lovin' is much too strong I'm added to your Chain, chain, chain Chain, chain, chain Chain, chain, chain Chain of fools One of these mornings That chain is gonna break But up until the day Oh, I'm gonna take all I can take Yeah, yeah, yeah Chain, chain, chain Chain, chain, chain Chain, chain, chain Chain of fools Oh, yeah, yeah Chain, chain, chain Oh, yeah, yeah Chain, chain, chain Chain of fools, yeah Hey, come on, let's party!
(clapping) Come on, Dave!
(vocalizing) Chain, chain, chain I said chain, chain Chain, chain, chain Chain of fools (vocalizing) Chain, chain, chain (vocalizing) Chain, chain, chain Oh, yeah, yeah Chain, chain, chain Chain of fools (crowd cheering and applauding) This song has, um...
It started off as one thing because I was touring the world with Quincy Jones, and we did Montreux Jazz Festival.
We went to Paris and London.
We did the O2 Arena.
And I would sing this song, you know, at all of those shows that he would be there.
But this is the first time I'm singing this song, and he's not here.
So this is his arrangement that he and Aretha did together of "Somewhere."
(crowd applauding) There's a place for us Somewhere there is a place for us Peace and quiet And open air It waits for us somewhere There's a time for us I know there is a time for us Some day a time for us Time together With just a little bit of time to spare Time to learn Oh, it's time to care Someday Somewhere Somewhere we'll find a new A new way of living We'll find a way Of forgiving Somewhere There is There is a place for us I know, I know, I know, I know, I know that There is a place for us Hold my hand And we're halfway there Hold on to my hand And I'll take you there Someday Some- somewhere I'll take you somewhere (crowd cheering and applauding) Aww... (chuckles) (crowd cheering and applauding) (crowd applauding) (crowd applauding) Say a little prayer for you The moment I wake up Before I put on my makeup I say a little prayer for you While combing my hair now And wondering what dress to wear now I say a little prayer for you Forever and ever You'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever and ever We never will part, oh, how I love you Together, together That's how it must be to live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me Ooh, I run for the bus, dear While riding, I think of us, dear I say a little pray for you At work, I just take time And all through my coffee break time I say a little pray for you Forever and ever You'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever and ever We never will part, oh, how I love you Together, together That's how it must be to live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me Oh, nobody but me Together, Forever You'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever and ever We never will part, oh, how I love you Together, together That's how it must be to live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me (vocalizing) But darling believe me For me there is no one but you Please love me true I'm in love with you Answer my prayer Answer my prayer now, babe Answer my prayer Say you love me too Answer my prayer Answer it right now, babe Answer my prayer Oh yeah Forever and ever You'll stay in my heart and I will love you Forever and ever We never will part, oh, how I love you Together, together That's how it must be to live without you Would only mean heartbreak for me Oh, nobody but me But darling, believe me For me there is no one but you Please love me true This is my prayer This is my prayer, my faith Answer my prayer This is my prayer Answer my prayer Answer it right now, babe Answer my prayer Say you love me too Answer my prayer Answer it right now, babe Answer my prayer, baby Say you love me too Answer it right now, babe Answer my prayer, baby (crowd cheering and applauding) Well, as you probably have seen, I really wanted to show the complete and tell the complete story of Aretha Franklin because, you know, in the first half, you know, she was doing those jazz standards.
Of course, her gospel album, which was her number-one-selling album to this day, it's hard to believe.
My mom, I have so many amazing memories of my mom and dad, us going to church and playing that Amazing Grace album.
So I know it backwards and forwards.
But I also want to show when she was into the movie soundtrack and- and Curtis Mayfield-- yes, somebody knows Curtis out there.
He produced this album of hers from the motion picture Sparkle.
And this is kind of one of those rare songs, but she was kind of in a slump.
And this was the song that brought her back.
This was the album that brought her back to number one.
So here is Sparkle.
I sparkle Loving the way that I do It is true I feel so good just having you Breathlessly and eager Submission isn't easy for me We were so loving, wasn't we I always known it could be Don't wanna do nothing, tied against your will This ain't no cheap thrill You got to know just how it feels If you think you're gonna fall All you gotta do is call I have nothing in my myself And I give myself to you Say child, tingle, sparkle I hope the love never fades away Even in fire burning every day Save all the warmth for you Just want you to know When the jealousy shows Understand that will be no other man But you, babe You can believe there's a love in me Cause I believe in you And when times are low And I'm really on your mind Everybody needs some time Something funky, good and kind And you always seem to please me And you wear me down so easy Good work is never done Until the morning has come Just want you to know when the jealousy shows Understand there will be no other man But you, babe, you can believe This love in me Cause I believe in you Don't wanna do nothing Tied against your will This ain't no cheap thrill You got to know just how it feel And if you think you're gonna fall All you gotta do is call I have nothing in myself And I give myself to you And when times are low And I'm really on your mind Everybody need some time Something funky good and kind, yeah You got to know how I feel The way you make me feel You got me where you feel It's funky good and kind (vocalizing) And you always seem to please me And you wear me down so easy Good work is never done Until the morning Until the morning comes (vocalizing) (vocalizing) (crowd cheering and applauding) Can we give it up for these singers, everybody?
(crowd cheering and applauding) You know, there are some people that you don't even remember meeting because they have been in your life forever.
That is my Stevie Mackey.
(crowd cheering and applauding) And he made so many sacrifices to be here with me tonight.
Thank you so much.
Give it up for Stevie Mackey, everybody!
(crowd cheering and applauding) STEVIE: Oh yeah.
SHELA: This is one of the ones you can dance to.
Let's do it with George Michael.
You ready, Stevie?
STEVIE: I'm ready, Shey.
Sing it.
Like a warrior that fights And wins the battle Know the taste of victory Though I went through some nights Consumed by shadows I was crippled emotionally Ooh, yeah Somehow I made it through the heartache Yes, I did I escaped Oh, I found my way out of the darkness Kept my faith I know you did I kept my faith When the river was deep, I didn't falter When the mountain was high, I still believed When the valley was low, it didn't stop me, no I knew you were waiting I knew you were waiting for me Oh, oh Yeah With an endless desire I kept on searching Sure in time our eyes would meet Like the bridge is on fire The hurt is over One touch and you set me free Ooh, I don't regret a single moment No, I don't I know you don't Oh, looking back, no, no, no, no, no When I think of all those disappointments Sing it I just laugh, I just laugh When the river was deep, I didn't falter When the mountain was high, I still believed When the valley was low It didn't stop me I knew you would I knew you were waiting I knew you were waiting for me So we were drawn together Through destiny Oh, oh, oh I know this love we share was meant to be Oh, I knew you were waiting Oh, I knew you were waiting Oh, I knew you were waiting for me I didn't falter I still believed It didn't stop me I knew you were waiting I knew you were waiting for me I didn't falter I still believe, still believe It didn't stop me I knew you were waiting I knew you were waiting for me (vocalizing) I still believed (vocalizing) I knew you were waiting I knew you were waiting for me (vocalizing) I knew you were there Oh yeah I knew you were waiting Knew you were waiting for me (crowd cheering and applauding) SHELA: I love you, Stevie!
STEVIE: I love you, too.
