Appraisal: Tairona Gold Pre-Colombian Pendant, ca. 1500
GUEST
I bought it at auction, probably around $300, $400. I thought it was kind of interesting.
APPRAISER
When you brought it to the table, what was the first thing I asked you to do?
GUEST
Find out if it was gold.
APPRAISER
And the gold people said?
GUEST
It's low-grade gold.
APPRAISER
If this piece was in Central America, and it came back as low gold, it would mean it was a reproduction. But this is from Tairona, in Colombia, at the base of the mountains. And this is a kind of a tumbaga gold, which is an alloy gold with a low gold content. This is exactly what we want to see.
So this is a pendant. And it would have been worn by a dignitary, somebody that, that clearly was an important individual. And I'm going to turn it over, and we can see it is a pendant. And it's, it's really, it's a great piece.
GUEST
Oh, okay.
APPRAISER
Okay?
GUEST
Yeah.
APPRAISER
And so the value on this would be $2,500 to $3,500.
GUEST
Wow, thank you.
APPRAISER
You're very welcome.
GUEST
Wow, thank you very much.
