About this show

Hosted by Wakelin "Ranger Mac” McNeel, this WHA-TV and radio series brought conservation education to Wisconsin classrooms from the 1930s–1950s. A pioneer in environmental literacy, McNeel used vivid storytelling and firsthand knowledge to teach children about nature, forests, wildlife, and the importance of caring for the land.

'Afield With Ranger Mac' is one of PBS Wisconsin's — known then as WHA-TV — earliest educational children's television programs of the 1950s. Originally recorded on 16mm film — part of WHA's 'School of the Air' — it has been preserved, digitized and rendered accessible online thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Henry Anderson.
