"Put Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, St. Francis, Amelia Earhart and Earl Hickey in a blender," Marques Bovre says, describing his band. "Shake with fire and ice. Pour into the broken vessels of humanity (salt on the rim to taste). Drink." Eclectic, yes, but full throated rock 'n' roll as well. Bovre's precision guitar style is complimented by another Madison icon, the legendary Jim Schwall.

Jim, you want to slip into something more accordion? As a band, I think I can speak for us all, that we are pro-accordion. And we vote. This is a song Maggie's going to sing. Maggie Weiser, to my left here, is going to sing a song called "Secrets." And as soon as Jim slips on his accordion, we'll just get right to it. : Secrets. Marques Bovre, thank you so much for coming. That was very pretty, Maggie. That song, and the song just before it, "Washes Everything," are from the new project called "Piata," right? And that tune, "Washes Everything," you set it up by talking about your hometown. There's lots of perseverance, I hear, in these new songs. And I'm wondering, what the "Washes Everything" part of the hometown song. Where is that coming from? Well, you know, that river's still running, even though I've been through a couple lifetimes since the last time I saw it, the way I saw it when I was young. So even though everything else has changed, the river is still running and that's always a good thing. Do you still have family there? Yeah, my folks live a couple miles outside of Paoli now. So, I hear perseverance in your songs. You're known for so many different kinds of attacks on popular music, and rock, Psycho Billy, I don't know, some time ago. Psycho something. - Yeah, your label goes here. What do you think? Where are you moving with "Piata", with these new songs? Just, I don't know, maybe it's just, I'm guessing, unless I get to be a whole lot older than I figure, I'm a little beyond middle age. So, you know, once you get to that place, I think you start seeing things differently. For me, it's just, you know, that broken isn't broken. It's just broken open, so I'm getting to see all the cool little treats inside of me that I didn't get to see when I avoided getting the snot beat out of me by a Louisville Slugger. Are you talking about being liberated? Being a Piata, yeah. Okay and being broken open like a Piata. Terrific. Tell us who else is playing in SoDangYang. Well, we've got Maggie Weiser over here. You heard from her earlier. Back behind her on bass, we've got Ken Stevenson. And Ethan Noordyke behind me on the drums, a lovely young person. He's the cheesecake in the band. ( laughter ) He's not broken open yet. No, but we're working on it. Then of course, I won't use "venerable," Jim. The lovely Jim Schwall. I didn't hear you. Did you almost say venerable, or honorable? Just about, venerable. Oh, I don't think-- Jim Schwall is-- He'd feel a little uncomfortable with honorable. He's certainly a Midwest and national musical icon in his own accord, not in his own mind. (laughter) But what a terrific combination. You first started playing with Marques and SoDangYang, tell us about how you guys fell in together. Well, I've liked the songs. I've lived in Madison for a while, so of course, I've heard his songs over the years. And when I saw these three guys playing as a borderline acoustic trio out at Cafe Carpe, I just said it felt like it wants to go be a band someday. And if you ever do, you know, count me in. And then once I brought all this electric noise into the group, then we had to get drums and just be a regular band. Look what you did. - See what I did. - You created this. They might be happily playing acoustic guitars at Cafe Carpe now. You created an event. ( laughs ) Well, we get more music, don't we? And at least one or two from "Piata" left, right? Yeah, including "Piata" itself. Thank you. Marques Bovre. It's amazing how many songs are on there. It's been only four songs, but it seems like we've done six or seven songs from that CD. ( laugher ) Maybe we'll add some bonus tracks. Do you have any opinions about what's coming up next? "Somebody Loves You." That's a good one. You don't get to play guitar on this one. No. That's right. Cool, all right. I fell in love with this song of Marques' a long time ago, before we really knew each other. This is back when you were just a bar maiden. That's right. - Up in Stevens Point. YOU MAY HATE YOURSELF YOU MAY HATE YOUR LIFE MAYBE JUST RAN OUT OF REASONS MAYBE DRINK THE DREGS FROM A BOTTLE FULL OF SORROW MAYBE CAN'T FORGIVE SOMEONE YOU LOVE FOR SOME PRIVATE OR PERSONAL TREASON MAYBE CAN'T EVEN SEE YOURSELF HANGING ON THROUGH TO TOMORROW BUT SOMEBODY LOVES YOU THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE SOMEBODY LOVES YOU WHOA, OH, OH OH, OH, OH IF YOU'RE A STRANGER ONTO YOURSELF THERE IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU AND IF YOU LOST ALL YOUR FAITH THERE'S SOMEONE BELIEVING IN YOU IF YOU'VE COME ALL UNDONE THERE'S SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CREATED YOU AND THAT'S SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU MM-HMM, MM-HMM YOU MIGHT BE BURNING SOME CROSSES OR BLOWING UP BUILDINGS OR FILLING YOUR CHILDREN WITH HATRED YOU MIGHT BE A BIG CITY COP OUT BUSTING SOME BONES ON YOUR BEAT BUT THERE'S NO SIN SO GREAT THAT IT CAN'T BE FORGIVEN OR SMALL THAT IT CAN'T BE DETECTED THERE'S A TRUTH IN YOUR HEART AND IT BURNS TO THE SOLES OF YOUR FEET SOMEBODY LOVES YOU THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE SOMEBODY LOVES YOU WHOA, OH, OH OH, OH, OH IF YOU'RE A STRANGER ONTO YOURSELF THERE IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU AND IF YOU LOST ALL YOUR FAITH THERE'S IS SOMEONE BELIEVING IN YOU IF YOU COME ALL UNDONE THERE'S SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CREATED YOU THAT'S SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU OOH, OOH, OOH MM-HMM, MM-HMM YOU MIGHT BE PARTLY DIGESTED AND COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN IN THE BELLY OF A FEDERAL PRISON MIGHT BE THE JUDGE ON THE TAKE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE LAW MIGHT HAVE SPIKE IN YOUR ARM AND A GUN IN YOUR HAND AND A HOLE IN YOUR HEART LIKE A DUNGEON MIGHT BE THAT TEN-YEAR-OLD-KID ON THE STREET WHO GETS EATEN UP RAW BUT SOMEBODY LOVES YOU THERE IS SOMEONE OUT THERE SOMEBODY LOVES YOU WHOA, OH, OH OH, OH, OH IF YOU'RE A STRANGER ONTO YOURSELF THERE IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU IF YOU LOST ALL YOUR FAITH THERE'S SOMEONE BELIEVING IN YOU IF YOU COME ALL UNDONE THERE'S SOMEONE OUT THERE WHO CREATED YOU AND THAT'S SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU OOH, OOH, OOH I'm going to switch my tuning real quick here. It won't take long, but I can tell you a little something about this song. This is a song called "Dry Bones." It was written a long time ago. It actually brought rain the first time I played it. I think one farmer even thanked me. It was after 40 days of drought. This song ended up on a CD; what's the name of that CD? "Madison for World Health." And it's available. At local retailers, and on the Web. It's a great project. It's a great thing to be a part of. And it's a bunch of Madison artists, mostly, on this CD. And the organization is working with the AIDS Network, and the Global Foundation, I think it is, or the Global Fund. I think it's the Global Foundation. There's a Web site. Yes, for more information. It's working to help fight AIDS and other epidemic illnesses in this country and around the world. Oh, yeah, and it's going to, the project is sort of going to culminate in this big concert on December 6, down at the Majestic Theater, in downtown Madison. We're really glad to be a part of that. We tune a lot, because we really care. And because we're oftentimes out of tune. Despite our caring. What do you think, Maggie?
