On a new edition of The Wisconsin Gardener on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) Producer, Host and Master Gardener Shelley Ryan and her guests look at late-season perennials, composting and lasagna gardening, and growing late-season vegetables. "The End of the Season is Just the Beginning" premieres 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 on WPT. The program will encore 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 28. Ryan visits Mark Dwyer, director of horticulture at Janesville's Rotary Gardens. Dwyer shows off some of his favorite late-blooming perennials as well as some annuals, bulbs and ornamental grasses. In Lone Rock, Master Gardener Roger Reynolds takes the confusion and guesswork out of composting. He also demonstrates lasagna gardening - a simple way to prepare fertile weed-free beds for spring planting that doesn't involve digging, tilling or weeding. Spring isn't the only time to plant vegetable crops. Chris Klaeser, co-owner of Middlebury Hills CSA Farm in Barneveld, shows Ryan how he uses germination blankets for a more successful crop of cold-tolerant vegetables planted in fall.
