The theme, "Get Up and Go!," fosters the PBS initiative that encourages children to live healthy and active lives. The free open house, hosted by Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) and the Educational Communications Board, will be held outdoors from 9–11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5 on the University of Wisconsin-Madison's East Campus Mall (next to Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.) For directions, call 608-265-5035. The event, to be broadcast live on WPT, will include appearances by walk-around characters from PBS's "Martha Speaks" and "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That." PBS's Mr. Steve also will join the morning?of live music, activities and hands-on fun. Community organizations will be present with activities, demonstrations and handout materials. They include Dane County Humane Society, Gymfinity, Wisconsin Historical Museum, South Central Library System, Madison Fire Department, NatureNet and the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Poison Prevention and Education Center and YMCA of Dane County. Attendees are encouraged to bring a gently used children's book. All books will be donated to local nonprofit child care programs. WPT is a service of the Educational Communications Board and University of Wisconsin-Extension.
