A new episode of The Wisconsin Gardener on Wisconsin Public Television (WPT) explores places throughout the state that feature ornamental edible gardens. "Sustainable Gardens" premieres at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27 with an encore broadcast at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 29. In Clyde, Producer Host and Master Gardener Shelley Ryan is joined by Ina Lukas at Blooming Valley Nursery to explore ways to create an oasis for butterflies and gardeners that involves special requirements other than food and water. Mark Dwyer, director of horticulture at Janesville's Rotary Gardens, shows Ryan an edible wall filled with herbs, peppers and flowers that can be used for personal home cooking. In Oregon, Ryan visits Carandale Farm where Dale Secher does research on a number of non-traditional fruits such as Aronia. Aronia has been used as an ornamental shrub in landscape but has lately been found to be highly edible and nutritious. Environmental Studies Program Chair at Lawrence University Jeff Clark shows off a sustainable student-run garden that grows food for its own cafeteria.
