This is something we do every year. It brings us together to celebrate something we share. Music. - Dancing. Singing. - Acting. Musical theater. No matter what school we attend. Or what show we perform. We have a bond. We come together to celebrate the work we all have done. Because we know about the weeks of rehearsals. The extra lessons. And the hours that go into the set, costume, lighting, and sound design. We know the work that went into that amazing high note. The complicated dance combos. And realistic character work.

"I See Stars"
Cheap, fake, easy to break That's how I used to be Here, take it, now I'm awake I'll tell you what I see Plastic don't shine, glitter don't shine Rhinestones don't shine the way you do You are so real, you are so rare I see you there, I see you I see stars, so many stars tonight You could make diamonds dull You are so beautiful I see stars, you shine as bright as day I will look out for you We'll light each other's way You're all stars See, I went low, not high That was my problem, mine Don't be frightened like me The darker the night The brighter you shine Plastic don't shine Glitter don't shine Rhinestones don't shine the way you do You are on fire, you can rise higher, up in the sky Enjoy the view You stars We are stars So many stars tonight You could make diamonds dull You are so beautiful I see stars, we are stars We shine as bright as day I will look out for you We'll light each other's way I see stars I see stars, I see stars So many stars tonight We could make diamonds dull We are so beautiful I see stars, I see stars We shine as bright as day I will look out for you We'll light each other's way We are so real, we are so rare We see you there, we see you We're all stars We're all stars So many stars Stars Hello everyone. It's so nice of you to be able to join us. Welcome to the 2020 Jerry Awards. My name is Tim Sauers, Vice President of Programming and Community Engagement for Overture Center for the Arts. And I'm Karra Beach, Program Manager for the program. We're here to encourage, recognize, and honor excellence in high school musical theater. Since we can't be together right now in Overture Hall, we're pleased that we were able to provide a virtual show. We recognize the impact COVID-19 is having on our community and hope that each and every one of you is safe and healthy. I mean, how great was that opening video, Karra? Wasn't it great? - It was awesome. And before we go, we have to thank Dave Alcorn, who is putting this whole show together and producer for it, and he put that video together, and when I saw it, I was so touched with how great those students sound. And the students that were in that video are part of the Jerry Ensemble, and they were performing "I See Stars" from Mean Girls. The ensemble features students from two ensembles. We have the Central Wisconsin ensemble under the direction of Marshall DeLonay based out of the Grand Theater in Wausau, and the South Central ensemble based out of Overture in Madison under the direction of Gail Becker. Just marvelous. They did a great job. It was so good to see them singing all together, sort of.
Karra laughs
Yeah, right? Yep. Our welcome tonight was presented by our Supporting Performance recipients, and this year we awarded 57 students with Supporting Performer awards. The Jerry Awards are named after philanthropist and great humanitarian Jerry Frautschi, along with his wife Pleasant Rowland, had the vision to build a vibrant performing arts center for the community that we know today as Overture Center. Our Jerry Award presenting partners for the program include the Grand Theater in Wausau, the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, and Viterbo University's Fine Arts Center, and PBS Wisconsin. To participate in the Jerry Awards, schools agree to have their high school musical reviewed by a team of adjudicators. In return, the school receives a thorough critique of their show and nominations in the various categories we recognize. At the end of the year, once we see the final productions, we announce the recipients and produce our show. This year, we saw 85 productions produced by 84 schools and theater groups. Unfortunately, when our community shut down in March, productions at 24 schools had to be canceled. We will be recognizing these schools later in the show. You know, I'm glad we are recognizing them because I know how disappointing it has been for all the teachers and the students and the parents not even being able to do their show, but I'm still impressed that we saw 85 productions. 85, I know. I mean, we saw classics such as West Side Story at Oconomowoc and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Reedsburg. We saw some Disney favorites, such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame at New Berlin Eisenhower and Brookfield Central, and Disney's The Little Mermaid at Sauk Prairie. And we saw some fun, uplifting musicals
like Elf
The Musical at DC Everest. And I had the opportunity to see that show and I had never seen Elf before, and it was so much fun. And we also saw Mamma Mia! at McFarland and Shorewood. That's right. We saw a collaboration of two high schools with Janesville Parker and Craig coming together with Meredith Willson's The Music Man. This year we are awarding 15 Outstanding Musicals. Directors were asked to submit up to a three-minute video about their show for tonight's production. For the first of these, please welcome Pewaukee High School and their production

Orchestras and ensembles bring the world of the musical to life. Both support the action and enhance the emotional spine. They both give groupings of students the opportunity to share in the storytelling and to come together to create the magic of theater. Here are the 2020 Jerry Award recipients for orchestras and ensembles.

I'm Gustavo Chaviano, choral teacher and director of the Broadway Company at Arrowhead High School in Hartland. This year, we had a blast traveling back to the '80s where colors were bold, hair was big, and music was still good for our production of The Wedding Singer. Our director and choreographer Scott Michaels envisioned this production being a caricature of the '80s. Everything from the colors on the sets to the costuming and makeup transported our audience back to this fun time period. While the students might not have totally understood every '80s pop culture reference, their parents loved it. It even brought back fond memories of their giant hair and mullets. I would like to extend a huge thank you to our production team, who made putting up this show a complete joy, with special recognition to our director/choreographer Scott Michaels, our assistant director Marilyn Markano, and my choral colleague and Broadway Company's biggest fan, Grace Bielski. I would also like to thank the Arrowhead community for their continued support of the arts and a huge thank you to the Jerry Awards for promoting excellence in high school musical theater. With COVID-19, we are unable to perform live for you, so we are going to provide you with this virtual performance. Everything you're going to see and hear was submitted by our cast members on their cell phones at home. I took all of their submissions and edited them into this little snippet from our finale. Now without further ado, here is the Broadway Company from Arrowhead High School and their Outstanding Musical Performance of "The Wedding Singer."

"Under Attack"
But I know love begins at 8
Under attack, I'm taking cover They're on my track, three dads, one lover Hi, I'm Patrick Fernan, one of the co-directors of McFarland High School's Mamma Mia! And I'm Brooke Hauser, the other co-director of McFarland High School's Mamma Mia! And I wanna thank the Jerry Awards for recognizing our show. Mamma Mia! is always a special musical theater experience, but it was especially important to us because it was the first musical in McFarland's new performing arts center. The students are having such a professional experience in this new space. Everything is brand new, backstage, on-stage, technically. It's a really amazing experience and we owe that all to the McFarland community that has supported our theater. And here we go again One of the great things about Mamma Mia! was the fact that we had so many family connections in our production. There was six sets of siblings in the cast or on the crew working together. Our musical director Mr. Paul Gregg and my co-director Brooke Hauser both had juniors who were in the show, and then Mr. Gregg and myself both had freshman daughters who were in the ensemble. Mamma Mia! is about family, and our production, backstage and onstage, really had that same feeling.
Woman
We're on set. Money, money, money Must be funny We wanted to pick a play that would really impress the community and bring people out, and we doubled our previous high audience members because we've doubled the size of the auditorium. But we were sold out for every show and Mamma Mia! in that beautiful new gift from the citizens of McFarland, we felt like we delivered a great show. It's a rich man's world
Brooke
We all know what makes high school theater so special is the bond that you make between the actors and the singers and the choreographers and the pit orchestra and the tech department. Everyone has such a great time together. We owe a lot of our success to the ensemble and the production team that brought all of this together at McFarland High School. Just one look and I can hear a bell ring One more look and I forget everything Whoa, oh, mamma mia, here I go again My, my, how can I resist ya Mamma mia, does it show again My, my, just how much I missed ya Yes, I've been brokenhearted Blue since the day we parted Why, why did I ever let you go This year, 24 schools had to cancel their productions due to COVID-19. We know how disappointed everyone was in not being able to share their shows with the community. Please join us in honoring these schools.

Brooke
There's a place for us Somewhere, a place for us Peace and quiet and open air Wait for us somewhere It's important to us to not only honor student achievement, but the achievement of the adults who work tirelessly to assure quality productions. The directors, the music directors, the choreographers, the designers and stage managers. Among the stage managers are also many students. These individuals often wear many hats and may not only direct the show, but they design the set as well. Some are school personnel while others are community members, parents, and volunteers. Congratulations everyone, for receiving Jerry Awards this year.

Hello, my name is Leigh Birmingham and I am one of the directors of Waterford Union High School's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Myself and my co-director Mr. Derek Machan would like to thank you for this phenomenal honor. Really what we would like to say is--
bell rings
Brooke
Miss Birmingham, please describe The Putnam County Spelling Bee in 10 words or less. Oh, well, I guess the way I would describe our experience with the show is-- Exhilarating, making one feel very happy, animated, or elated. Used in a sentence, the performers had an exhilarating time performing their musical. Exhilarating, E-X-H-I-L-A-R-A-T-I-N-G, exhilarating. Incomparable, without an equal in quality or extent, matchless. Being the know-it-all perfect new girl at the Putnam County Spelling Bee was an incomparable experience. I-N-C-O-M-P-A-R-A-B-L-E, incomparable. Anomalistic, deviation or departure from the normal or common order. Used in a sentence, the musical itself proved to be anomalistic. A-N-O-M-A-L-I-S-T-I-C, anomalistic. R-I-O-U-S, uproarious. Or, characterized by excessive laughter.
snorts
Brooke
Extraordinary, part of speech, adjective. Meaning beyond what is ordinary and also remarkable. Used in a sentence, the Putnam County Spelling Bee was an extraordinary experience that I'll never forget. E-X-T-R-A-O-R-D-I-N-A-R-Y, extraordinary. Unique, U-N-I-Q-U-E, unique. Did I get it? Thalposis, the sensation of warmth. Used in a sentence, after the directors thought about what the kids had done for the performance, they were overcome with a wave of thalposis. T-H-A-L-P-O-S-I-S, thalposis. Well, I guess that pretty much sums it up. So from all of us here at Waterford Union High School's production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, we would like to say thank you.

Hello, my name is Joe King and I am the theater director at Shorewood High School. We are delighted to have had our production of Mamma Mia! named Outstanding Musical. Our artistic staff and students, including designers, builders, costumers, musicians, and actors worked extremely hard to achieve excellence. All of their talent and dedication makes it possible for our relatively small school of 650 students to produce two fully-staged musicals per year. A huge shout-out to Ashlea Fendyke for her Outstanding Lead Performer Jerry Award for her role as Donna Sheridan, and senior Janiya Carter, who was our Spirit Award winner. Additionally, junior Olivia Dardis earned an Outstanding Stage Management Jerry. Our dynamite artistic staff includes Brad Brist as technical direction and set and lighting designer, Sara Van Loon as costume designer, Bryan Kujawa and Raven Dockery as instrumental and vocal music directors, and Christal Wagner as choreographer. Amanda Hall serves as our props master and Paul and Kat Kneevers are our sound designers. Enjoy some photos of Shorewood High School's production of Mamma Mia!

Just one look and I can hear a bell ring One more look and I forget everything Whoa, oh, mamma mia, here I go again My, my, how can I resist ya Mamma mia, does it show again My, my, just how much I missed ya Yes, I've been brokenhearted Blue since the day we parted Why, why did I ever let you go Mamma mia, now I really know My, my, I should not have let you go We'd like to take this time to thank our sponsors for the Jerry Awards. Without their support, our program could not happen. Old National Bank. American Girl Fund for Children. Wisconsin Arts Board. An anonymous donor. Katie Dowling-Marcus and Ben Marcus. Electronic Theater Controls. And Wahlin Foundation on behalf of Stoughton Trailers, LCC. Really, thank you so much. I mean, it's so great, Karra, for them to be able to support our work and to ensure that these students have the opportunity to get recognized for their musical theater excellence. That's right. Hello Jerry participants and all your fans. My name is Katie Dowling-Marcus and I'm the co-chair of Overture's Development Committee. With so many disappointments and cancellations this spring, it's wonderful that not even a pandemic can keep the Jerry Awards program from celebrating your achievements and participation in the performing arts. You all deserve a round of applause for your hard work and dedication, whether your school's musical made it to the stage or not. The Jerry Awards is just one of many free and low-cost programs offered by Overture Center that serve nearly 300,000 people each year. I know how much this program means to all of you because it has meant so much to my family. My son has been a nominee and is a member of the Jerry Ensemble. We all know how much the Jerry Awards program inspires young people, but we can't make it happen without donations, and now is the best time to make a gift of any size. Between now and June 30th, every donation will be matched up to $200,000 thanks to the generosity of Bell Laboratories and of Dianne Christensen, whose gift is in honor of Sandra Gajic. I hope you'll join me and become a supporter by going to overture.org/give to donate by June 30th. On behalf of Overture's board, we thank you for making a difference.

76 trombones led the big parade With 110 cornets close at hand They were followed by rows and rows Of the finest virtuosos The cream of every famous band 76 trombones caught the morning sun With 110 cornets right behind There were more than a thousand reeds Springing up like weeds There were horns of every shape and kind

My name is Libby Fischer, and I'm the choral director at Craig High School. I really loved working on Music Man. It's really unique that students get to put so much time and effort into a production with kids from another school. That experience is so beneficial to both the students and the district as a whole. Music Man is also such a uniting show. It has music that is universally loved and so many goofy bits that are relatable on many levels. Students really took this production to the next level. The amount of care they put into their roles was so fun to see. I saw kids coming out of their shell on stage and finding friends that they would've otherwise never met. Jan Knutson really took me under her wing during this entire production. Being able to work across town is an important part of strengthening the school district and the City of Janesville. While 110 cornets blazed away To the rhythm of harch, harch, harch All the kids began to march And they're marching still right today
Jan
Hi, I'm Jan Knutson, the choral director at Parker High School. Originally from Iowa, and having taught in Mason City or River City, Iowa, The Music Man has always been dear to my heart. Just as Harold Hill brought the townspeople together, our production brought Craig and Parker High Schools together. We now have students who love barbershop quartet singing and that know how to dance to "Shipoopi." The Music Man is all about transformation. Harold Hill is an instrument of change. He takes a sleepy, rude town and makes it an energetic, musical, and positive place. In watching all this metamorphosis, we change a little ourselves. We see how the attempt to learn music changes everyone in the town, and in our case, brought us all together.

Elf is a director's dream. It has all the big song and dance numbers and a heartfelt story that captivates an audience. I think the most memorable part of the Elf experience for me was watching our theater community grow and create memories that will last a lifetime. I think that performing for our community gives them the chance to feel included in our creative process, and through the experiences, become a part of our journey. Lack of dedication. Working around packed schedules. Time. Time. There's never enough time. All in all, programming lights provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a field that isn't normally covered in standard schooling, as well as offering opportunities to make new friends. In this show, I really proved that I can take on difficult characters. I learned that it isn't necessarily easy to be funny on the stage, and you really have to find a balance between not enough and too much. The pump-ups we do a few minutes prior to places being called. Drink water, eat snacks, and listen to pump-up music. Dance parties in the dressing rooms. That first moment on opening night is so exhilarating. You can feel all the hard work and determination that each person on the stage has put into the show, and I feel that opening night is just the culmination of all of our hard work. I created bonds with people and shared good laughs with them. I made many new friends. I became a leader for the underclassmen and built stronger relationships with my peers and directors. This was truly a collaborative effort. Our whole department, cast, crew, orchestra, families, and staff all deserve this recognition. Additionally, we're so thankful to be in a district who values and supports the performing arts. Being a big part of an overall production and knowing that my efforts have helped create many beautiful shows make me so proud of what I've accomplished. Theater has always been a safe place for me. It turned from a place to escape to somewhere where I thrived. I fell in love with theater because I fell in love with myself in the process. Bye.

Hi, everybody at the Overture Center and all the participants of the Jerry Awards. We're sending you so much love. I'm Paul Canaan. I'm Jacob Yandura, and I'm a musical theater composer. We are sending you so much love since you weren't able to perform your musicals for the Jerry Awards this year. Now is a crucial time to use your talent for good. Keep on researching, keep on performing, keep on finding new musicals and writers that you love and that you haven't discovered yet. And most importantly, keep on spreading that joy. Yes, I was a Broadway performer for many years and now is definitely such an important time for connection and for expression and for just creating things together. We're all going through it, it's a very hard time, but we believe in you and we know you're gonna kill it, and we can't wait to see you in New York on these streets. So good luck with your year and we're sending you so much love. Congratulations.

We are the directors of New Berlin Eisenhower's theater program, and are proud to accept the award for Outstanding Musical for our production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Quasimodo was a baby when he was left in an unforgiving world. He was taught from birth that he was a monster who would never be accepted. However, Quasimodo made a choice to see the good in others, to find beauty in the mundane, and to see hope for a better future. Today at this point of great uncertainty, we all have had something stolen from us. Time with people we love, a performance, a graduation. Yet this moment has also shown us the importance that arts play in our lives. The sense of community, camaraderie, and creativity that the arts provide give us purpose, create meaningful relationships, and connects us in ways that few things can. Today, we make the choice to believe that someday life will be kinder, the needs we face will be rarer, and that a better day will come soon.

Hello, I'm Traci Mann, Market President at Old National Bank. We are thrilled to be part of our third year as title sponsor of the Jerry Awards through the Overture Center for the Arts. The Jerrys truly make an impact throughout the state of Wisconsin, with nearly 100 schools and 9,500 students and volunteers. I've been fortunate enough to see Jerry students perform, and each time I'm blown away. Yes, these performers have talent, but what's truly impressive is their poise, maturity, and commitment. As a community bank, Old National believes each of us has a role in making the places where we live and work be better, and the arts play an important role. The arts bring people with different voices together and throughout those experiences, you gain new perspectives. We leave these experiences as better people, and when that happens, all of our communities are stronger. From all of us at Old National Bank, I wanna congratulate all the students, teachers, and volunteers for participating in this year's Jerry Awards.

Hello, my name is Joe King and I'm the theater director at Shorewood High School. We are delighted to have had our production of Urinetown named Outstanding Musical. Our students and staff were delighted to produce this quirky, underappreciated show. I would love to acknowledge all of the amazing and talented student set designers, builders, costume designers, makeup artists, musicians, and actors who made Urinetown a top-notch piece of theater. I'd especially like to mention junior Maya Schmitz and senior Jaron Tsuchiyama, who earned Outstanding Supporting Performer Jerry Awards, junior Maddie Beeghly who earned an Outstanding Lead Performer Jerry as Hope Cladwell, and senior Sarena Powers, who is our Spirit Award winner. Junior Olivia Dardis earned an Outstanding Stage Management Jerry, and sophomore Henry Heyden was the Sound Design Jerry winner. Finally, a huge shout-out to the amazing artistic staff of this production, including Brad Brist, technical direction and set and lighting design, Sara Van Loon, costume design, Bryan Kujawa and Raven Dockery, instrumental and vocal music direction, Ryan Cappleman, choreography, and Amanda Hall as props design master. Enjoy some photos of Shorewood High School's production of Urinetown.

Hey everybody, this is Heidi Lofy from the Marcus Performing Arts Center in Milwaukee, and I just wanted to say congratulations for being a part of this year's Jerry Awards. Sorry we're not gonna see you in person, but we'll be back soon. Hi everyone, Michael Ranscht from Viterbo University. So glad that you guys were able to submit some videos and congratulations on everything that you've done. You've made music theater an important part of what happens in high school, congratulations. Hi everyone, Sean Wright from the Grand Theater in Wausau, Wisconsin. Congratulations. You guys are some of the best musical theater talent anywhere, and we're so lucky that you're part of the Jerry Awards program. Isn't that right, Katy? That is right. Katy Lang, also from the Grand Theater, here. We're so proud of all of you. Congratulations on being part of a very memorable Jerry Awards show. I'm Jon Miskowski, Director of PBS Wisconsin. I want to thank our colleagues and partners here for the great work that you do in your communities and for the wonderful work that happens at Overture and in schools across the state. And we are looking forward to continuing to celebrate that wonderful work next year. Thanks.

Hello, my name is Colleen Jaskulski and I am the director of the Wauwatosa East Players production of Seussical the Musical. I'm currently seated on our set, which has still been standing since we were forced to close early due to the onset of COVID-19. We are thrilled that we were able to perform four of our six public performances, as we know that so many other schools in the area did not get that opportunity. Here at Wauwatosa East, we had over 100 students involved in the production of Seussical. We have talented actors, musicians, and performers that all helped to bring the show to life. But one of the things that I think really makes Wauwatosa East special is the student-run crews. All of the elements of the show, from props and construction to lighting and sound and makeup and everything in between, the students are the ones that are in charge of those crews. So although the adult teams are here to aid them in their creativity and help them when they need some guidance, most of the magic that you're seeing on stage was brought to life by our students, and I think that that's just a really special and unique element of this theater. One of the things that I think is great about Tosa East Theater is the traditions that go along with it. There are traditions that span back all the way to the beginning of the theater more than 80 years ago. But so many of those traditions align with the closing performance, which unfortunately we did not get to have this year. However, theater students are creative. So on the Sunday of what would've been our closing performance, numerous members of the cast, pit, and crew all got together at a local park and performed the show one last time. They laughed and sang and danced and spent time together, really honoring the production that they had put together and the friendship that they all had with one another. And I think that moment speaks to really what we need right now, and the love and commitment that we have to have for one another in this moment. On behalf of everyone here at Wauwatosa East, from the students in the cast and pit and crew, to the staff that helped make the show possible, thank you so much for this award and for honoring high school theater in Wisconsin. I know I can speak for everyone when I say we are so excited to be back and to continue to make magic and theater that brings joy to so many. Thank you so much.
