Professor T

(footsteps approaching) (upbeat music) Cheers, cheers... (music stops) (music resumes on TV) Presenter: Live from Cambridge University, it's the 27th Sterling Pen Awards.

Please welcome your host, Miss Juliette Carrisford!

(applause) A warm welcome to everyone, to this... -Mum?

-I'm in here.

The 27th Sterling Pen Awards for literature.

-You okay?

-I'm fine, I'm fine.

You know, things being what they are.

-Yes.

-Oh, thank you.

Oh, you're not back on these?

Well, you weren't here to boss me around.

Mom, you combat agoraphobia with therapy, not pills.

Sh-sh, sh-sh.

(presenter continues) Oh.

This is why you were so keen to have me around.

Well, how often do we get to spend time together, just the two of us, hey?

This is not just the two of us, is it?

...front runner.

(applause) And this year's Sterling Pen Award for best crime novel goes to... (drumroll) ...an individual who in a former life was a Cambridge professor of criminology.

(claps) Yes!

For 'Unhappy Birthday', Hamish Maclean!

(celebratory music) (cheering, applause) Well done, old friend.

(clapping) Okay.

(celebratory music) (applause) Thank you, wow, so unexpected, uh, to be in such company.

I can only say I am not worthy, but truly grateful.

I don't know how you can watch this.

Thanks to... He's the reason you can't go out.

No, that's nonsense, darling, come on.

And above all, for putting up with me, to my family.

You're welcome.

Couldn't mention you by name, or me.

(dramatic music) Maclean!

You stole my life!

You're a disgrace!

Ooh... You're a liar!

You're a thief!

You're a liar!

Oh my God, it's Tom.

You're a disgrace!

You're a disgrace, Maclean!

Ladies and gentlemen, my number one fan, master criminal Tom Evans.

Living proof, never drink on an empty head.

(laughter) (applause) Well done, Dad.

Poke the bear.

(clapping) (upbeat music) (musical crescendo) (engine revving) (gentle music) (children playing) (relaxed music) (panting) (sighs) App: Key in your choice of exposure.

Between one and ten, estimate your anxiety level.

You have selected seven.

You now have five seconds to proceed.

(sighing) (gasps) Between one and ten, now key in your actual anxiety experience.

Four.

I am proud of you.

Insufferable.

Let's try this again tomorrow.

Maiya: Right, so this is Hamish Maclean, hit by a car and killed last night.

The accident, assuming it was, happened right outside his house.

-CCTV?

-Oh, the irony.

A campaign to ban CCTV in the neighborhood was led by guess who?

So, we haven't got a make, model, or license plate of the car that killed him.

We do, however, have a person of interest.

Yeah.

(mouse clicks) You're a disgrace!

You're a liar!

You're a disgrace!

You're a disgrace, Maclean!

That's Tom Evans.

He did five years in prison for aggravated burglary and he was released when it came to light that evidence that backed his alibi hadn't been made available to his defense.

(phone ringing) Hang on.

Hello?

-On purpose?

-Evans had a reputation.

I think somebody thought they were doing the public a favor.

Yeah, okay, okay.

-He's in custody.

-Okay.

-Shall we?

-Yeah.

Two years ago, Hamish Maclean published a novel based on your case.

-Bestseller.

But he didn't pay you, and he didn't even give you a credit.

And then there he is.

He's on stage, having a pop.

Everybody's laughing.

Dan: Two hours later he's knocked down by a car and killed.

Could you tell us where your car is?

2002 blue Citroën, registered to your address.

You really think I killed Hamish Maclean?

Please answer the question.

Yeah, I left it where I always leave it, right outside my house.

And when I got home last night, it wasn't there.

We should take another run at him in an hour.

No.

Let him stew.

Prioritize finding the car.

Get that, we've got him.

Okay.

(office phones ringing) (gentle music) Prof T: I have prepared a mushroom risotto.

Ooh.

Well, shall we have a...?

Oh, yes.

Um... -The app's working well, then?

-Yes.

Uh, exposure therapy.

He tells me I am making progress.

He?

You do know it's a bot?

Well, uh, it helps to personalize it.

I, um... I gave it a male name.

Why not a female?

Because we are discussing things of a delicate nature.

Oh.

Such as?

Well... (chuckles) If you can tell your male fantasy bot, you can tell me.

Today I inputted, um, occasional complications with regard to... what one might refer to as physicality.

I also mentioned our recent, um... -Kiss?

-Yes.

Not exactly recent.

-Thirteen days.

-(laughs) He, well, it, uh, suggested we might wish to experiment with other forms of activity.

Hmm.

I could...(clears throat) give you a massage.

Sorry, the risotto requires my attention.

Sorry.

Lucky old risotto.

Don't be so disgusting with them.

'Cause I want it put in the mouth.

You can get your own.

No!

-You don't have to be so... -No, you made your bed.

-...like, gatekeepery about it.

-Ah... -(chuckles) (relaxing music) This is alright, isn't it?

Yeah.

What?

Um... Remember when we met?

-Yeah, the pub.

-Yeah.

What were you doing there?

Fate.

Seriously.

Um... Spirits half price.

Why are you asking?

Um, my boss wanted to know.

Your boss?

Well, yeah.

'Cause your dad, I think... Dan, your boss has no idea about me or my dad.

It's easy to judge when you don't know what people have been through.

Well, tell me.

Okay.

Here's one.

My dad's six years old, his mum walks out.

Gone.

It's just him and Wesley the whole summer.

Wes is eight.

Social services put them in different care homes, and no contact for nine years.

And what happened to the mother?

She didn't want to know.

My dad never saw her again.

Babe, I'm sorry.

I'm sorry.

I just, um... It's alright.

Oh... Sorry.

It's okay.

(tender music) You can have all my chocolate sprinkles.

Yeah.

And all my pudding.

(soft laughter) I meant to ask actually, did you, did you know Hamish Maclean?

Oh, um, yes.

I mean, there was a time I would've gone so far as to call us friends.

Um, my first year as a lecturer, -Hm.

he and his wife were extremely supportive.

Oh.

I'm sorry.

He left the department to write and we lost touch.

I did actually watch the awards show.

-Hm.

-And then this morning, the news of his death.

Quite a few fans in my, in my book club.

Well, we assume a door will always be open and then... without warning, it closes forever.

You know, his wife might appreciate a visit.

Reconnect.

Show support.

Maybe, yeah.

Ma'am.

Yeah, yeah.

(sinister music) (sighs) Why should it take a death to bring old friends together?

Indeed.

I have been most remiss.

Do you still take it black?

I do.

Um, this is, uh, not as I remember it.

-Oh, yes.

Hamish had Grace painted out and replaced with his dog.

Hm.

They argued over her choice of boyfriend.

Tom Evans.

Grace went out with him to annoy Hamish, and... well, it certainly worked.

Shall we change the subject?

Um, I believe you've been working with the police?

Yes.

They have taken Tom Evans into custody.

Oh, good!

Oh... You know we endured months of Evans threatening us, demanding money.

But I... I never dreamed it would end like this.

The novel that drew on Evans' experiences, that was some years ago.

Well, Hamish's publisher sold the film rights, and Evans wanted his share.

I won't feel safe till he's locked away.

And for good this time.

Okay, clock's ticking on Evans.

What have we got?

Okay, so we know that Hamish Maclean left the awards ceremony by night bus.

Footage from that bus shows that he arrives at his street, Cleveland Row at 1.15am.

As we know, Cleveland Row, no CCTV.

However, there is CCTV here, here, here, and here.

So, if we're assuming that the car that hit Hamish left Cleveland Row, it would've shown up on one of these, but it wasn't.

But uniform have searched Cleveland Row.

Yeah, well, not well enough because a car doesn't just disappear.

Okay.

You take four officers.

Don't come back till you've found it.

Oh, happily.

-Uh, DS Winters?

-Ma'am?

Did you get a chance to talk to your friend?

What she was doing in an old man's pub?

Yeah.

Um, her ex liked a bargain.

Went in for the half price spirits.

Anything else?

No.

Okay, thanks.

(suspenseful music) Oh, the Salvation Army are coming to pick them up.

Hard to imagine Hamish in that.

Oh, that's mine.

Never worn.

Grace bought it for me, made me hang it there.

An incentive to get better.

Is it serving its purpose?

It just reminds me I'm a woman with long-term agoraphobia.

And do you still have your 'me time' on the roof?

Every day at two.

Hm.

Hamish didn't deserve to die like that.

Promise me you'll get a conviction.

You know I cannot in good faith make that promise.

Just do your best.

That's all I ask.

(up tempo music) (doorbell rings) (street chatter) You stole my life!

You're a, you're a thief!

And you're a liar!

You're a disgrace!

(up tempo music continues) -Thank you.

-You're welcome.

(knocking) That place has been empty for years, love.

Thanks.

Uh, my number one fan and master criminal, Tom Evans.

Living proof you should never drink on an empty head.

(door rumbling) I've had news from forensics.

The dent on the bonnet of Tom Evans' car is consistent with hitting a pedestrian between speeds of 40 to 50 miles per hour.

Also, fibers matching the type of jacket Hamish was wearing was found on the windscreen wipers.

Right.

Good afternoon... You've got the ammo.

Finish it off.

-Thanks, Ma'am.

-Thanks, Ma'am.

Professor, good timing.

I think you got home, drove to Hamish Maclean's, and waited.

-Oh, yeah.

You should be a writer, mate.

You got a gift for fiction.

How do you account for the damage done to the bonnet of your car?

The car had been stolen.

Oh, yeah, stolen and then hidden in a garage.

We found fibers from Hamish Maclean's jacket on your car.

So, you have a motive, opportunity, and no alibi.

-Or I was stitched up.

-Hm.

It happens.

Okay, opinions.

Do we have enough evidence to charge him?

We've got a motive, strong forensics, threatening behavior.

Yeah, I think we've got enough.

The fiber evidence is strong, if forensics can prove it came from the actual jacket worn by Hamish Maclean.

Well, that's gonna take some time.

Tom Evans' profile is not that of a preternaturally violent man.

That's not what I heard.

An assessment by the prison psychiatric team recommended a move to an open facility.

There was nothing in their report to suggest that Tom Evans was a danger to others.

In my opinion, Tom Evans should be released with immediate effect.

Why am I here, if not for my insight?

If the Professor's right and Evans had nothing to do with this, he could sue us for wrongful arrest.

Just luck his car was used to kill Hamish Maclean?

What if somebody else used the car?

'Cause that's a win-win.

Maclean's dead, Evans has been arrested.

Victimized again.

So, who's he working with?

-Ma'am?

-Mm-hm?

Since we're not, like, 100 percent on Tom Evans, I was looking at some alternatives.

-Okay.

-So, two years ago, Tom Evans' car gets pulled over.

Driver's way over the limit and gets an 18 month ban.

-Grace Maclean.

-Mm-hm.

I spoke to the Professor, he's a family friend.

Turns out that Tom and Grace were a thing for a bit.

Mm.

I'm just wondering if there's a world where they've planned this together.

Find some evidence first.

Wasn't a no.

I want the immediate release of my client.

You probably don't need reminding that my client was a victim of an egregious miscarriage of justice.

Oh, it's all we talk about.

His arrest is attracting widespread media attention.

With Tom's history and the fact you're investigating the murder of a well-known writer, you need to tread carefully.

That 36 hour limit's almost up, and I don't want a man already traumatized from wrongful incarceration spending another three nights in a cell because you've managed to convince some Cretaceous era magistrate that you have a case.

You can't prove my client drove that car.

And as I'm sure you're aware, the fibers matched the type of jacket worn by Maclean.

Similar particles can be recovered from any car in the country.

Slightly overplaying your hand, there.

Well, if you think you can prove any of that in court, crack on.

I'll tell my client to look forward to another six figure payout, shall I?

(door opens, shuts) Professor, quick question.

How sure are you that Tom Evans didn't do it?

Unequivocally sure.

No room for doubt?

None whatsoever.

Do you plan to release him?

Yeah.

-Thanks.

-Thank you.

(knocking) Come.

You are pursuing a second lead in the Hamish Maclean case.

-Yes.

-What do you have?

Emily Maclean.

I spoke to her.

Her and her husband had separate wills.

Turns out that her husband had written Grace out of his.

Because of Grace's affair with Tom Evans.

Yeah.

And the best part about it... Grace knew that she would not be picked up on the CCTV outside her parents' house.

Her father also replaced her with a dog, should you require further motive.

-A dog?

-Mm.

A bloodhound.

What, what do you mean he replaced her with a dog?

In a family portrait.

So Grace had means, motive, and opportunity.

Those facts are indisputable.

Do you really think she would kill her own dad?

(upbeat music) I think you should follow your instincts.

Okay.

Thanks.

(chatter) Mm-hm.

DCI Goswami, come in.

This is Chester.

Chester Vass.

Thanks.

Do you know that your daughter's dating one of my officers?

Yeah.

How do you feel about it?

What's that expression?

Over the moon.

That's how I feel.

In fact, my whole family's doing cartwheels.

I just hope he's not one of the ones we keep hearing about.

And which ones are those?

The corrupt.

The violent.

(threatening music) Ones that are easy to bribe.

DS Winters has an exemplary record.

And what about the ones who put a man with a heart condition in a choke hold?

There was a full inquiry, Mr.

Vass, as you well know.

Witnesses heard him shouting, "I can't breathe."

Witnesses lied.

Nobody touched your brother.

Was it you?

With the choke hold?

Or were you just part of the cover up?

We're done here.

Tell Danny boy, thanks for the advice.

What advice?

What advice?

The police have Grace in custody and they've released Tom Evans!

I mean, what on earth is going on?

They are pursuing a number of avenues.

I have to talk to her.

Well, that will not be possible while she's in custody.

Well, I'll call a solicitor.

Oh, these things are never charged when you need them.

Excuse me.

(receding footsteps) How was your relationship with your father?

Um, my father and I had our differences.

I watched him turn into a drunken, aggressive bully.

Like, he undermined my mother so much that she was... physically unable to leave the house.

Do you recognize this house?

-No.

-Belongs to an elderly woman, um, Eithne Hoyle.

Your mother said that you used to do the shopping for her.

Oh, I didn't know her name.

Are you and Tom Evans together?

No.

That was over years ago.

When you arrived here, you deposited your property at the custody desk.

That's your stuff, yeah?

Can you identify the keys?

Um, yeah.

My...that's my house key.

And, uh, my car key.

What about that one?

Um, I don't know.

(sinister music) I think you do.

We checked it with the murder weapon.

The murder weapon?

Tom Evans' car.

Why do you have a key to his car?

Um, uh... That could have been in my bag since we split up.

That proves nothing.

(dramatic music intensifies) (upbeat music) Listen to me, Tom.

Go to the edge of the roof.

Good.

Very good.

Man: Don't do it, mate.

Don't do it!

(clamoring) Come on, son, don't be silly!

Listen to me very carefully, Tom... -Excuse me?

-I want you to... (door closes) What, what are you doing here?

...step... Sir?

(clamoring from below) Tom!

(dramatic music builds) W-w-wait, wait... No!

(screaming) (thud) (dramatic music crescendo) (sirens blaring) One of the students said he fell backwards.

He did.

Odd way to do it.

And why here?

Someone could have been badly hurt.

Someone was.

Oh yes.

Utterly appalling, all of it.

Hm.

It looks as if they're coming for you, Jasper.

I believe you are correct.

Professor Jasper Tempest, I'm placing you under arrest in connection with the suspicious death of Tom Evans.

Is the use of handcuffs either reasonable or necessary?

You don't have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you do not mention something you may rely on in court.

Oh, have some common sense, this man is an eminent professor.

Eminent?

I've made a mental note of your number.

Unwarranted use of force.

What's he done this time?

I have no idea.

(dramatic music) That's Tom Evans.

Looks like he pushed him.

What?

He's dead.

And the Professor's in custody.

What, do you want us to interview him?

No.

Sterile corridors on this.

I've passed it on, and they're sending in a DCI.

If I want to murder Tom Evans, I'm not gonna do it where I can be filmed, am I?

I called the university.

This CCTV was only installed a month ago.

-What, so he didn't know?

-I don't know.

What I do know is that I released Tom Evans on the advice of the Professor.

And Evans murdered Hamish, his former colleague and friend.

So, that's motive.

Exactly.

DCI Becker.

Uh, DCI Goswami.

This is my team.

-Hi.

-Hi.

Hi.

I've been informed about your connections to Professor Tempest.

You're recused from the investigation.

All of you.

Professor Tempest, you stood trial for discharging an unlicensed shotgun in this very police station.

(somber music) The case was dismissed.

Got a history of taking the law into your own hands.

You recently lost your mother.

Yes.

First your mother, then your friend.

What was it Freud said about grieving?

He said that it involves a departure from the normal attitude to life.

I'm not a huge fan of Freud, but you got that right.

(suspenseful music) (suspenseful music intensifies) Dan: You wanted to see me.

Close the door.

I had a chat with Chester Vass today.

Right.

Tell me you didn't advise him to drive an anonymous car and to lose the personalized plates.

Um... Well, Leonie said her dad kept getting pulled over, and, uh... -Dan.

If I put that on your record, you'll spend every interview for the rest of your career trying to explain it, and you'll never get out of that office.

Sorry, Ma'am.

It won't happen again.

Where's this all gonna end?

(knocking) -Hi.

-Hi.

I'm checking out reviews.

-New steak house sounds decent.

-We need to talk.

(somber music) Your dad spoke to my boss.

And remember you said he kept getting pulled over?

Yeah.

And you said tell him to get a family saloon.

It was a throwaway comment between us.

Like, you and me.

Why would you tell your dad?

I'm sorry.

I, I... I didn't think.

Yeah.

Well, now I'm being told that career-wise, I've gone as far as I'm gonna go.

He knew what he was doing, he's not getting away with that.

-What are you gonna say to him?

-I don't know.

But if I don't put a stop to it now, he'll keep doing it.

I'm sorry.

It's not your fault.

(sighs) I have had the most dreadful day.

Oh... The board, I'm afraid to say, is gunning for Jasper.

Tall poppy syndrome.

His brilliance exposes their mediocrity.

Hm.

My worry is that their lack of support will drive him to the United States.

American universities are big game hunters, academically speaking.

And Jasper is a prize quarry.

Jasper?

In America?

He wouldn't do that.

-Huh!

I don't know, he might.

That would mean leaving Helena.

You'll have to talk to the board.

Make them see reason.

Ah.

There is one other slight problem and something I perhaps I should have mentioned earlier.

What?

Your nephew, Jasper... and there's no gracious way to frame this... What, for God's sake?

He's been arrested.

For murder.

What?!

Ah.

I should perhaps have led with that.

(light-hearted music) It'll keep him in the country.

(glasses clink) (lock clicking) (water pouring) Would you rather be in the cell?

I would rather be at home.

They're brand new sheets and pillows.

Don't go AWOL, and for God's sakes, don't tell anyone I did this.

I'm risking my job here.

I have not yet had my phone call.

Oh.

Well, who's your lawyer?

I wish to speak with Dr.

Goldberg.

(jaunty music) (office chatter) (jaunty music intensifies) (gasping) Jasper?

(laughs) -You succeeded.

Yeah, but not exactly maximum security.

Anyway, my book group came through for me.

You've read these?

No, but I was there when one of them was discussed.

And the general consensus seemed to be that, yeah, this was his best.

-Happy Birthday.

Unhappy Birthday.

-Yes.

So, what you told me about Tom Evans on the, on the roof.

-Falling.

-Yeah, but before that you said he seemed to be in a stupor.

-Indeed.

-Yeah.

Well, that reminded me of something that the group had been talking about, because the victim in this is also in a stupor and he dies because he can't stop eating his own birthday cake.

And this won an award?

Yeah, but that's not the point.

The point... He dies because he can't stop eating his own birthday cake.

Ah, Jasper, look, just read it.

(sighs) (light-hearted music) -Morning, Liz.

-Morning.

(door opens) Morning.

I've got some good news.

Did you know that the Unabomber was convicted on the basis of forensic linguistics?

You haven't slept, have you?

Each of his messages created a unique linguistic fingerprint, including, ironically enough, a misspelling of the word 'clue'.

Professor, you've been granted bail.

There were two eyewitnesses in the building opposite who both said they saw you were trying to save Evans.

As I told you.

Where did all this come from?

No, actually, don't tell me.

I don't want to know.

I've got enough going on.

I am close to a solution.

However, I need to see a toxicology report on Tom Evans.

It's not in yet.

The lab opens at eight.

Why?

Each of these contains a motive for murder.

Well, they are crime novels.

The murder of Hamish Maclean.

(hold music on phone) Come on, ah, forensics lab.

Why must they compound the torture of being placed on hold by inflicting Ode to Joy... Hello, uh, Professor Jasper Tempest.

I urgently need to have sight of the post-mortem report for one Thomas Evans.

Jasper, the law faculty board... -Ode to Joy.

-(sighs) Yes, at risk of adding insult to injury, the faculty board has suspended you from teaching until further notice.

Your exploits are drawing too much negative attention.

You will have a chance to explain yourself this afternoon.

Well, the board shall have to wait.

-Jasper, I can't just... -I have no time to waste.

Someone went to a great deal of trouble to frame me for the murder of Tom Evans.

Now that I have been released, they're going to try again.

To frame you?

(hold music playing) No... Of course.

You're correct.

They're not going to frame me.

Much simpler to murder me.

Well, you seem inordinately pleased at the prospect of your own dispatch.

I am.

Since it affords a solution that is efficient, effective, and elegant.

(Ode to Joy continues) DCI Goswami, this is Professor Jasper Tempest.

No, I am not jogging.

I am merely walking at speed.

I am calling to request your assistance.

What does this assistance entail?

And what is physostigmine?

DCI Goswami, she called to tell me you'd been released.

What was that all about?

A misunderstanding.

No cause for concern.

Oh.

She also said you're close to naming Hamish's killer.

We are lacking one crucial piece of evidence.

Can you tell me?

I'm sure you can appreciate, I cannot risk prejudicing the case.

Ah... Yes, you're like Hamish.

Keep them in suspense till the end.

The end of a novel is like the final bars of a great symphony.

Take a seat.

Kettle's just boiled.

(threatening music) You were too principled to promise me you'd catch them, but I knew you would.

I have not caught them yet.

You will.

Would you like a biscuit with that?

No, thank you.

It helps the digestive system.

You always were so adept at taking care of me.

(laughs softly) Oh... (dramatic music) Ah... (sighs) Nice cup of tea.

(chuckles) It does wonders to ease the stress of the day.

(dialogue echoes) I always say you can think so much better with a cup of Earl Grey.

Just keep walking.

(echo) Professor Tempest?

Jasper, you know I have always looked after you.

Walk to the edge of the roof.

(dramatic music) There's a small parapet.

I want you to stand on it.

I need you to stand on the parapet.

Can you do that?

-Yes.

(clamoring) (clamoring) Now, Jasper... Man: Don't do it!

you know I've always looked after you... (dramatic music intensifies) Just one more step and merge with the beautiful, clear blue air.

(dramatic music intensifies) -No!

-Ah!

(panting) Just...step back.

You said that wouldn't happen!

Professor!

Professor?

(gasps) Professor!

(suspenseful music) (gasps) Emily Maclean, you are under arrest for the murders of Tom Evans and Hamish Maclean, and for the attempted murder of Professor Jasper Tempest.

Can I just remind you that my client until yesterday had not left her house for ten years.

Medication's working well then, isn't it?

Why was it deemed necessary to detain an elderly lady overnight?

Our forensic linguistics team had a lot of reading to get through.

The style of this novel is radically different from your husband's previous work.

Yeah.

Success began with the fifth novel.

That's the one about Tom Evans' wrongful imprisonment.

Stylometric analysis of your letters show that you wrote those novels.

This is all circumstantial.

We need a confession.

How did it feel?

To have written four really successful novels and have your husband just take all the credit for them?

(applause) Thank you, wow.

So unexpected to be in such company.

I mean, this one... it's up for a major award, and you're just sat there watching Hamish lap up all he applause.

He didn't even give you a mention.

-Ghosted his ghostwriter.

-Hm.

He'd promised you, didn't he?

Promised you that you would finally get the credit that you deserve.

That's why you invited Grace to hear him say it.

But...he didn't.

Couldn't mention you by name, or me.

Uh, I've had enough of this.

We found traces of the drug scopolamine in Tom Evans' system.

It causes people to become extremely suggestible.

It's been used to commit robbery and to kill.

Tom!

No!

You knew about that.

You researched it for this novel.

We also found traces of the drug in the tea that you gave Professor Tempest.

You were too principled to promise me you'd catch them, but I knew you would.

I have not caught them yet.

You will.

Why didn't you just tell people that you wrote the books?

Because my husband made it very clear how easy it would be to turn me into a laughing stock.

The delusional, depressive wife, locked away in the attic.

(poignant music) And yes, he promised if he won, he'd credit me.

And I wanted so badly for Grace to hear him finally say, to finally say that I had some worth.

It was a very clever plot to kill your husband.

Not clever enough.

(sighs) What was it that made you think it was her?

Her jacket.

There was a pressure mark on the shoulder.

She said that she had never worn it.

I hoped that it had not been caused by a seatbelt reacting to sudden impact.

Like when she ran over her husband.

They welcomed me into their home.

The warmth between them, it was, um... something new to me.

What happened?

You're the psychologist.

Should we, um...?

Normally, yes.

But not here?

It's not about location.

It's about this, which my ex sent me, out of the blue.

Perhaps I should have mentioned this.

Let me just get this straight.

The forensic medical examiner injected you with, with what?

Physostigmine.

The antidote to... -Scopolamine, yes.

I...I got that bit.

But what I didn't get is why you came so close to walking off a roof.

Well, I can only assume I was plied with a stronger dose.

And this insane risk, you didn't think to mention it to me?

It was perfectly safe.

It was not perfectly safe, Jasper!

For God's sake, you almost died!

-DCI Goswami was there.

I mean, you wouldn't even know about scopolamine if it hadn't been for me!

We're supposed to be partners!

We're supposed to be a team!

Why...why did Emily Maclean kill her husband?

-Well, because she felt... -Because she felt invisible.

Your work at the police station comes before me.

Your work at the university comes before me.

Everything comes before me.

-Not anymore.

I have been suspended.

-Suspended?

-Yes.

Oh.

The board believes my antics are starting to outweigh my value.

I mean... Every time I think we've made a bit of progress, we just... slide right back to the start.

(sighs) Well, we don't have to be here.

I mean, you did tell me that you'd had offers.

In Boston.

Uh, John Adams University.

I taught two semesters at Linn- Beck College in Massachusetts.

They...they did say they'd welcome me back anytime.

A fresh start.

(poignant music) Give ourselves a chance.

The reason that I came here was to thank you for your help.

Oh.

(laughs) Good.

That must have been hard.

You solved the case.

Oh, come on.

I helped.

Let's not get carried away.

Shall we try again?

(tender music) Have you ever been to Boston?

No.

But my reasons for remaining in Cambridge have gone.

Is this actually happening?

Yes.

(warm music) (chuckles) I can't wait to show you around!

The harbor, the... Beacon Hill.

The trees... oh, in autumn.

They're just so beautiful...
