10 Jam Doughnuts

Give your creation a name – and tell us about your recipe.

Very Berry Jam Mini Doughnuts. I went with a mini fried doughnut and filled them with a homemade jam made from freshly picked raspberries and blueberries.

Now that you’ve survived this challenge, what words of wisdom can you share?

Find a recipe that works! It was a ridiculous series of trial and error for me; I was laughing and shaking my head. I truly struggled with this challenge. I actually made the dough twice because the first time I thought I missed a step. However, the result was still the same the second time through. My yeast activated but my dough did not rise! Weirdest thing. And I found the dough to be very tough and hard to work with. The struggle didn't end there. Turns out I set my oil way too hot and found some of my doughnuts to be undercooked inside. It was sad. The few that did turn out were fabulous, though! The flaky crunch of a fried doughnut combined with sweet jam is a flavor combo like no other.

Tell us about how you added a Wisconsin twist.

My jam was made with raspberries and blueberries freshly picked from the Rocky Acres Berry Farm in Bayfield, Wisconsin. It is absolutely gorgeous up there, from all the farms to the cute downtown area and marina on Lake Superior. There are so many farms with fresh berries, cherries, peaches and lots of other produce. It was a perfect day trip getaway for my family.

Totally failed … and still laughing.
