Churros

Give your batter creation a name – and tell us about your recipe.

Badger Fan W Churros y chocolate a la mode du Wisconsin. As a retired Spanish teacher, I have had churros y chocolate many times in Spain. I used the chocolate recipe that I always shared with my students from the cookbook, "Food of the World – Spain: The Food and The Lifestyle." It is the most authentic recipe I have found. It is rich and creamy like chocolate pudding. I used the churro recipe from The King Arthur Flour Baker’s Companion. It is like making eclair batter.

Now that you’ve survived The Great British Baking Show’s first-ever batter challenge, what words of wisdom can you share?

If you have made eclair batter, it is easy to make. The difficulty is getting the churros to fry in the desired shape. Trying to make the W that Badger fans form with their thumbs and index fingers is a true challenge. My best attempts are on the cake plate. The others are in the dish below.

Tell us about how you added a Wisconsin twist.

Wisconsin Badger fans are crazy for the W. I wanted to make my churros in that shape. Chocolate dipping sauce in Badger mugs adds a nice touch. This could work for a tailgate. After frying, the churros were sprinkled with sugar and Penzey’s cinnamon. The a la mode is vanilla ice cream from Sassy Cow Creamery near Sun Prairie. My husband and I drove to the creamery and I treated him to a triple scoop dish for his assistance.

How did you do?

Pleasantly satisfied.
