Good Neighbor Bourbon and Berry Chocolate Torte

What was the biggest surprise during your baking journey? Did you use any unconventional approaches? What did you learn along the way? Tell us about it!

You may have noticed my hometown and be aware of the tragedy that recently shook our community [a gas leak and explosion which leveled businesses and killed one person] . That was my biggest surprise while baking this cake. I had my three layers cooling on the counter when the blast happened. You see, we live less than a quarter mile from the explosion. We were quickly evacuated shortly after. We are grateful that our family and house are safe and so very saddened at the loss our community has felt, not only in a fallen firefighter, but also the landscape of our neighborhood, a neighborhood I have called home for more than 30 years. In the days since, this community has come together in support of one another in a way I could never have predicted! My cake is dedicated to all the "Good Neighbors" out there!

How did you add a Wisconsin twist to your flavors or decoration?

My good neighbor, Chris, was picking Wisconsin grown blackberries and knows of my affection for baking. He dropped off two bags, knowing I would put them to good use. My other added twist comes in the way of Wisconsin’s own J. Henry & Sons Bourbon, distilled right nearby in the town of Dane, as an added flavor to my torte! It enhances the dark chocolate so well!

How did you do?

Absolutely lovely.
