How did this baker brighten our summer?

One of the many compelling things about this baking duo is how actively they participate in Lara’s parents’ family farm in Central Wisconsin — called Glacial Gardens. Most stories in our inbox made reference to it, to our delight. Lara and Tom were also co-masters of other locally purveyed ingredients: borrowing thyme from friend’s herb garden, picking early season cherries from Seaquist Orchards (Door County), making maple syrup sauce in the family sugar shack.

Our favorite Wisconsin Twist (pictured)!

Lara and Tom’s “Birds Love Blueberries” pie during none other than Pie Week alerted us to a Blueberry Festival in Gibbsville, WI (near Sheboygan) that inspired their bake. The name of their pie speaks to how humans and our animal friends compete for the fruit of our landscape — a fact we too often forget — and it suggests a resolute communion with our feathery friends to share our bounty. We love that.

A choice quote or piece of Star Baker wisdom:

Lara and Tom’s Great Wisconsin Baking journey reminds us to have an intentional relationship with the land and labor that produce our food, as well as a “co-living” orientation to the nonhuman living creatures that comprise our ecosystem. And we’re so grateful.
