Churros

Give your batter creation a name – and tell us about your recipe.

Apple Poppers. For these churros, I added an American twist on to a Spanish classic. I wanted to make a cinnamon churro, but add apples to the center. I figured it would taste like a bite size apple pie and it did. The recipe for the churros was found on Pinterest and the recipe for the apple filling was my grandma’s apple pie filling.

Now that you’ve survived The Great British Baking Show’s first-ever batter challenge, what words of wisdom can you share?

For the churros you had to deep fry them if you went the classical route. I didn’t have a deep fryer so I just used oil in a sauté pan. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE TEMPERATURE! Within seconds my kitchen was covered in smoke because I over heated the oil. Then I safely moved the oil outside to cool off, but my house smelled really bad the rest of the day.

Tell us about how you added a Wisconsin twist.

For the Wisconsin twist I used apple pie filling inside the churros. Although apples aren’t in season right now, this recipe would be great in the autumn with some fresh Wisconsin apples.

How did you do?

It’s not pretty, but it’s edible.
