Baking Challenge

Hidden Design Cake

Give your cake a name based on the ingredients and decoration – and tell us about the origin of your recipe.

W for Wisconsin – We found a hidden cake recipe on Pinterest and adapted it slightly. To be honest, it wasn’t written very well so it was a good thing we know a little bit about baking. We added some lemon and strawberry – both fresh and not enough.

Tell us about your proudest moment – or humble failure – in this week’s baking challenge.

This was our first attempt at a hidden cake design. We were a little concerned putting the amount of batter into regular loaf pans. We were pleasantly surprised with the results of the red cake and the Ws we cut. However, upon putting the vanilla loaf over the Ws in the pan, it wasn’t easy and created a massive mess in the oven. We were very close to smoke alarms blaring with burnt goo on the bottom of the oven. The cake came out, baked all over the pan. A few good whacks with a knife and some trimming along the sides, we were able to get an intact cake out of the pan. We were so excited to cut it open and see the W. We opted to allow everyone to top their piece with their desired amount of whip cream.

Describe how you added a Wisconsin twist to your creation.

We purchased a Wisconsin W cookie cutter from the UW Bookstore. We used that W to cut our red cake for the inside surprise. Nothing says Wisconsin like the UW.

How did you do?

Pleasantly satisfied.
