Burnt Toad in a Fiery Hole: When discussing the choices for this particular challenge with my mother-in-law, she mused that her mother used to make Yorkshire puddings for Sunday dinner and they would always put maple syrup on them because they were so bland. When I found the "toad in a hole" recipe I decided that adapting it so that it would be a breakfast dish was the perfect idea! I got maple-flavored breakfast links and added a touch of sugar and vanilla extract to the batter. Everything was perfect … until it absolutely was not. The sausages were burnt beyond recognition and I did not make enough batter for the pan I used and there was so much oil. Overall, not a good bake.
Now that you’ve survived The Great British Baking Show’s first-ever batter challenge, what words of wisdom can you share?
Don’t try this at home! The amount of spitting the oil did when I put the sausages in the pan hare worried I was going to burn the house down!
Tell us about how you added a Wisconsin twist.
I got the breakfast sausage links from the Dane County Farmers Market and used syrup from Northern Wisconsin to make it edible.
How did you do?
Totally failed … and still laughing.
