Brittany Koteles:
What is the root of what we mean when we say land return? Part of that is that because we live in the world, there is a deed and it will be transferred. And that is a transactional movement of a thing that says whoever has this gets to make decisions about this land. I think what makes this a land return is much more than the transfer of the title to land — it is ultimately one little piece of reclaiming and redefining our relationship to land and each other, to say we live in a system that commodifies land. This land has a market value of some two and a half million dollars, and that's because of whatever all the ways that, yeah, it can be traded for money. That market value is determined by what the people with the most money are willing to pay for land. And we're saying — and I think this transfer is a part of that is saying — we want this story to be about relationship. We want it to be about healing. The sisters are saying we want to tell the truth about what happened historically, and we want to support your continued journey to sovereignty.
