Who are Latino teens?  How are they doing growing up in Wisconsin, in school and community?  High school graduation rates for Latino youth after four years in high school is 75% according to data compiled by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. For whites the graduation rate is 92.2%.

Congress is continuing to debate a Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill and what will happen to the “DREAMers” or undocumented immigrant youth who arrived in the United States as children. Many undocumented youth who arrived prior to age sixteen can now apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which means they can get a driver’s license and go onto to higher education after graduation from high school, obtaining a GED or be an honorably discharged veteran.

A panel of Latino youth will discuss what DACA means to them as far as going onto school. A pre-produced piece will showcase a Latino male who graduated from high school, received DACA and has accepted a track scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Other topics discussed by the Latino youth will include talking about: what they like/dislike about school, hardships, participating in extra-curricular activities, speaking Spanish and English, fear of parents being deported, having strong family ties and a work ethic, their heritage and culture count and their spirituality.
