Walker to Keep Same-day Voter Registration in Place

Frederica Freyberg: Governor Scott Walker is backing away from a Republican proposal to do away with same-day voter registration in Wisconsin. The governor first mentioned eliminating the law during a speech in California after the election. And two Republican lawmakers announced they were drafting a bill that would be ready when the legislature came back next January. But the Government Accountability Board released estimates that eliminating same-day registration would cost the state more than $5 million upfront and up to $2 million every two years after that. Scott Walker: There’s no way I’m signing a bill that costs that much money. So to me, as I’ve said before, I didn’t advocate for a bill. I didn’t even say it was a priority. I just said I thought it was be easier. But with that kind of dollar amount, to me that’s a non-starter.
