Appraisal: Karpen Rococo Revival Chair, ca. 1900
GUEST
It came through the family. And my grandmother used to sit in it very regally and hold her cane.
APPRAISER
Okay.
GUEST
And then as children, we all sat in it.
APPRAISER
This is in the Rococo style. The Rococo style developed in Europe-- in France and Italy and Germany-- in the first half of the 18th century.
GUEST
Mm-hmm.
APPRAISER
And what we have here is really organic designs-- these leafage and flowers, cabochons, scrolling ornament-- has a wonderful sensuality. This chair, of course, was not made in the first half of the 18th century, but it was made... probably right around the first few years of the 1900s.
GUEST
Uh-huh.
APPRAISER
And made in Chicago. You can see right here, there's a label, "Karpen." So this is really Rococo Revival.
GUEST
Uh-huh.
APPRAISER
It's been upholstered about five times.
GUEST
Oh!
APPRAISER
The original green upholstery is underneath. So it was originally... you'll see a lime green color.
GUEST
Uh-huh.
APPRAISER
This is probably worth right in the range of $2,500, maybe $2,700.
GUEST
Uh-huh.
APPRAISER

GUEST
