Ode to the Madison Farmers Market — Inside and Out
What was the biggest surprise during your baking journey? Did you use any unconventional approaches? What did you learn along the way? Tell us about it!
Well, the most surprising thing was that this challenge got posted so late! I had already made the Stella's Bakery Hot Spicy Cheese Bread as my finale piece, but I didn't realize that specific challenges would be posted for Wisconsin Week, I just thought it was going to be "make something Wisconsin-y," so I had to make the Savory Pithivier at the last minute! The cheese bread turned out great, too, but this one gets submitted because it fits the brief. We all know how Paul doesn't like it when you stray from the brief!
How did you add a Wisconsin twist to your flavors or decoration?
I bought all of the things that I used to get at the Madison Farmers Market on the square: sweet potatoes, pears, fennel, mushrooms, onions… and I used them as the filing in my savory pithivier. So my Capitol building has the contents of the farmers market — and my fond memories of walking around on Saturday mornings inside of it!
How did you do?
I participated in all 10 Great Wisconsin Baking challenges this summer — I’m a Star Baker!
