Spring is in the air!

Well . . . maybe, not quite. However, the PBS Wisconsin 27th Annual Garden and Landscape Expo is finally here to give you a taste of spring with a fragrant side of floral notes — on Feb 7-9 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The Garden and Landscape Expo celebrates the latest trends in gardening and landscaping and attracts more than 20,000 people from across the Midwest. Join other gardening enthusiasts to share ideas, gain inspiration and connect with professional landscapers.

Got some greenery that needs tending but can’t make the Expo? PBS Wisconsin has you covered with select livestreams of various Expo workshops so you don’t miss out on the action! We will be livestreaming six of our expert-led seminars on Saturday, Feb. 8 from the Alliant Energy Center.

Gardening as We Age

Mark Dwyer, Landscape Prescriptions by MD, will present on tools, techniques and opportunities to provide a better gardening experience as we get older. His techniques will help pave the way for a fulfilling gardening experience that can be applied throughout life.

10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.

Invasive Jumping Worms: Impact and Control of a New Garden Pest

Brad Herrick from the UW-Madison Arboretum will give a talk on jumping worm biology and ecology. Non-native invasive jumping worms in Wisconsin can have negative impacts on soil and plant health. Along with the background on the species, Herrick will also introduce potential control and management  options.

Road Trippin’: Wisconsin’s Public Gardens

Join Mark Konlock of the Green Bay Botanical Garden on a virtual tour of public gardens throughout the state of Wisconsin. Dive deeper into the rich colors, textures and ideas from last season. During the seminar, get inspired to make your own garden and start making plans to visit these beautiful public spaces throughout the upcoming summer.

1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.

How Trees Built the Midwest

Throughout this session with Jay Dampier from UW-Madison, Division of Extension, learn the stories behind five beloved trees that have shaped our region. Other topics like the link between Dutch elm disease and emerald ash borer in urban settings, and the discovery of Honeycrisp apples will also be addressed throughout the session.

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Native American Foodways

Most of our produce has its roots in food cultivated by Native Americans. Laura Manthe and Lea Zeise, Ohe*láku will present on the advanced agricultural systems for self-sufficiency and trade that Native peoples have developed over time. Tune into this session to learn about these foods and world views.

3:45 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Growing Tomatoes in Wisconsin

Lisa Johnson from Extension Dane County is here to provide some tips on growing tomatoes. Tomatoes are popular in Wisconsin but can be challenging to grow due to their susceptibility to diseases. This presentation covers a number of topics to help you have a more plentiful harvest. Topics include proper watering and fertilizing, trellising, mulching and more.
